The Division Two Playoff Picture

The regular season reaches its climax for Division Two this
weekend, with the final round of matches - and the playoff
picture, as usual, is still not entirely clear.

The top of the table is almost set - Peoria takes on Universal
this weekend, and a win will assure them of top seed as well
as automatic entry to Division One. The next 3 seeds, assured
of byes, are also set - Advancers, IIT and QC Kings will all
finish in the top four, they cannot be caught by anyone else.
The next 3 teams in the current standings are also assured of
playoff spots - Evanston, Jaguars and Madison - totalling 7
(out of 12 possible spots available for the playoffs).
Evanston will probably drop 2 points, their "tie" against
Jolly Rovers probably being ruled a loss, but are still assured
of the playoffs with 36 points.

After that, things get interesting - especially with not all
teams having updated their results. The next 4 teams (spots 7
thru 11) all have 32 points apiece, and all have 1 game left.
The Giants, CCI and Jolly Rovers have un-updated scoreboards
(Lucky has updated everything, and have finished their
schedule) - however both Giants and CCI are actually still at
32 after 13 completed games at the moment. With Jolly Rovers,
we have had no news of their match a few weeks ago against
Tigers... fellas, please let everyone know, it affects several
other teams too :-)

And finally the battle for the last playoff spot... Raiders
and Springfield are both at 30, Collinsville at 28, and
Illinois at 26, all with 1 game left (Collinsville has
not updated their loss in the last game yet - they have 30
from 13 games, not 12).

The big games to watch this weekend are as follows:
Springfield vs Warriors: A home win for Springfield will push
them to 34, and almost certainly into the playoffs. A walkover
will suffice too.

CCI vs Advancers: A very difficult home assignment for CCI,
who have a poor run-rate despite being at 32 points. A win will
see them make the playoffs... but only a win may suffice, due
to the poor run-rate. If they lose, they must hope for 2 of
the Raiders, Springfield and Collinsville to also lose this
weekend.

Giants vs Raiders: One of the best contests of the entire
weekend - Giants, at 32 points and a good runrate, are almost
in barring a disaster this weekend. Raiders, at 30 points,
have to have a win - and just a win will probably be enough. Also the most even contest in terms of table-positioning, an
8-win team taking on a 7-wins-and-1-rainout team in a do-or-die
game!

Collinsville vs QC Kings: A hard away-game for Collinsville,
who lost a huge contest at CCI last week. Still, a win could
take them to 32 points, and into a run-rate battle for the last
playoff spots.

Jolly Rovers vs Madison: This game really is crucial only if
Jolly Rovers lost to Tigers... of which we are still unaware,
weeks later :-) If it was a win (or even a rainout), Jolly
Rovers are probably already safely into the playoffs (with
34 or 36 points going into this last game).

Illinois vs Chicago: A real longshot for Illinois - they can
get to 30 points with a win, and 11 teams already have 32.
However, if Springfield, Raiders and Collinsville all lose and
ICC beats Chicago... we could have one of the most dangerous
#12 seeds in the history of the Division Two playoffs!

These above games will probably decide the playoff spots.
IMHO the cutoff will most likely come at 32 points this
season... everyone with 32 *could* make it, but there is a
strong chance that one 32-point-team will be left on
the outside looking in based on runrate (CCI has the poorest
runrate of any of the 32-point-teams currently - given that
they missed out on the playoffs two years ago on runrate,
they will surely be very very keen to upset the Advancers
this weekend, to get to 36 points and make very sure!)

Good luck to you guys this weekend. Hope you get the win and an "improbable" entry to the playoffs just to add some "masala" to an already exciting season. :-)

It isnt out of the realm of possiblity IMHO - just, as I said, a "longshot".

They do need 3 teams to lose. However, Raiders are playing Giants (a team above them in the table, who also need a win badly and will come very hard at them); and Collinsville are playing QC Kings, a team that has lost only once all year! The real game that must be worrying ICC, IMHO, is the Springfield matchup with the Warriors - Warriors can be a very young team sometimes, and have given walkovers to a few away sides already this year. Still, they beat Arsenal earlier this year, so have shown they are capable of pulling an upset.

If I was betting, though, Id bet Springfield makes it (either with a win or a walkover).

Sadiq,

How many points does a tie get ? 2 or 3 ? and wont it affect the seedings as i think as of now only 2 points are being given to ties.

Teams that give walk-over should be automatically relegated to Div-III or Div-IV where they can play based on their availability or what ever This is definitely not right

Div-I and Div-II should be exclusive to teams that want to play more competitive games where there is no room for walk overs

Guys,

I am Dinesh from Jolly Rovers. To answer your question, we havent played Tigers yet. They couldnt make it to the game because of some cricket commitments in LA and so it was postponed. We dont know if we will play next week or if we get a walk over. But anyway, like you guys said I think we are pretty safe. But our aim is to win against Madison and finish with 40 points and finish No.5 :)

I have never seen a bigger playoff scnerio mess.

Here is why I say this:

A. Last week of playoff and teams like Jolly Rovers have 2 games left. Now how is that this issue is not resolved by league. What's the wait folks?

B. Evasnton vs Jolly Rovers game. Another big mess one team is saying tie, one team booked this as a win.

C. CCI, Collinsville & Giants have played 13 games and again failed to update there scores. I thought there was penalty for teams not updating there score board and it's unfair for other teams as they do not see true picture of what they are chasing. Not sure who is responsible for such complaince - Wake Up.

D. Tie = 2 PTS or Tie = 3 PTS. A big freakin mystery. Website and laws says 3 but teams scoreboard shows 2. Totally impacts the playoff picture. Teams on the bubble should protest.

What next week? The regular season of Div2 is supposed to finish this weekend... we thought playoffs would start next week :-) I understand the postponement here actually, its a good reason - there were U19 championships in LA IIRC, and MCC sent a team with Tigers players in it (they have a lot fo kids on their roster). However, surely a makeup date should have been found before now? Maybe the long weekend or something? If after tomorrow everyone has played 14 games and JR and Tigers have played 13 each...when is the time to play it again? Or does that automatically mean a walkover? (Its not like JR can be asked to play back to back here either - their game tomorrow is in Madison!)

Then you must be new to our league ;-) Last year was much more of a mess IIRC - with about 14 teams tied on points for 12 spots, and runrates a mess (mostly because teams had calculated it wrong all season, thus other teams didnt know what they needed to win by before they took the field etc, and we had a scenario of a team in 14th place jumping to 10th place without playing a game on the last weekend, just by "changing" their runrate and making it more accurate etc :-) ). It was finally resolved by having 2 "wildcard" games before the actual playoffs began, IIRC! This year is a breeze by comparison :-)

PS said:

------

As explained, Tigers/JR game moved due to pretty good reasons (just like games are moved for LA Open, or used to be before no games were scheduled for that weekend this year, so they should be moved for U19 tournaments if youre representing the league, probably). But I agree, a makeup date should have been found earlier. However I suppose weather has played a role too in screwing that up (and maybe JR couldnt play long-weekend, who knows - they cant be forced to, not after they werent the ones who requested the initial move).

--------
PS said:
B. Evasnton vs Jolly Rovers game. Another big mess one team is saying tie, one team booked this as a win.
------

Yes, this was a bit of a mess. However I think this has proably been resolved already - JR declared the winner I think. At least, when I spoke to Magnus at the ICC/Evanston game, he thought that they were not going to get points for a tie, that the game was being awarded to JR...but Evanston are thru to the playoffs anyway with 36 points, so they are unlikely to appeal or anything.

I agree, this is something that really needs fixing. However, its also the fault of the antiquated internet-system we have - from what I understand, if teams somehow failed to put stuff in for a few days (ie that same week), the website doesnt *let* them get back in and post old scorecards in even a week later! The process then becomes very cumbersome - teams have to call the league, league has to do something to open it up again temporarily, then that particular team has to go back and enter cards etc. This is something that needs fixing, obviously, but its a pretty old website, and a major overhaul of everything that is required takes time, money, effort etc.

-------
PS said:
D. Tie = 2 PTS or Tie = 3 PTS. A big freakin mystery. Website and laws says 3 but teams scoreboard shows 2. Totally impacts the playoff picture. Teams on the bubble should protest.

I have a feeling this is due to the old website etc too (note, if its a rainout, the website actually doesnt allow you to input a card for the part of the game that was actually played, IIRC. Which is not right in terms of stats, for instance - they ought to be counted. But its the old website that we have, and again, a complete overhaul of it is a pretty major project).

THe rule for ties was always 2 points, same as a rainout. I think it was a year or two ago that people figured this wasnt a great idea, that a tie *should* probably be worth more than just a totally washed out game, and so changed it to 3 points - a good change IMHO. The rules etc reflect this - they are updated every year, after all. However, Iam pretty sure the old website automatically still gives 2 for ties/rainouts etc... which is probably why the table reflects the old-scoring-system. (I presume this means Giants are actually at 33 points, and thus almost certainly in the playoffs as we stand today? Could any of the Giants confirm?)

Cricketwallah,

You are correct sir that I am new here. My son plays for MWCC and that instigates my interest in this league.

I have been observing this league and It seems to me that this league is in a mess. (People please do not jump on my statement and start shooting me - hear my resoning)

Lack of leadership is what ruining this league. Leaders gets things done fast. I am not bashing MWCC but a week has gone by and people all over are looking for MWCC officers to provide direction on the status of Pak Gymkhana players that took part in this famous brawl. Now I understand that investigation takes time but even a kid on the corner can tell you the name of players that were involved in the brawl. I guess leadership to me is demonstrated by acting swiftly to avoid disruption for all the other teams.

Possible solution would have been was for TA to immediately suspend everyone that was actively involved in the fight for the rest of this season. This alone would have bought MWCC time to siff thru rest of suspension and other disciplinary actions.

Call this conspiracy theory or not but I hear that this is Election year and its quite possible that TA does not want to loose any VOTES by pissing off people.

As far as the score card being mess. Well it seems to me that it two part problem.

1. Old system - I am no techie but I know that in this league we have enought desi brain to rebuild this site from scratch with very little cost. If we can fly people around country then what is another 5K towards one place that serves as your communication tool to all players. Again I blame lack of leadership by TA to look forward and for you all to accept mediocrity. Even kids in 5th grade have a better site and who drew that picture of bowler and batsman when you login to MWCC site. Pathetic.

2. League Failure To Enforce Law - I would blame the MWCC for not enforcing teams to update scores. Cmon we are 1 week from playoffs and still there is no sense of urgency from MWCC.

Also let me tell you what will happen with Jolly Rover vs Tigers Game: Watch this Tigers will give a walkover to Jolly Rovers.

As for playoff starting next week. If there is no playoff next week then be prepared to play in Frosty conditions. It's almost mid September and if there is not playoff next week then it means teams that keep winning will have to play all the way into End of October. Now even my nephew who is 2 knows that is not cricket weather.

Cricket in Chicago should end by September - again you start late, so you end late and ofcourse all the bye weeks. I looked at it and there are teams that have not played a single game in over a month. What a joke.

TD,

I think there might be a correction in the predicted standings, due to Evanston's Tie points being taken away from them:
So what I "think" might be the final standings and playoff matchups are :

Final Standing (14 Games)
1. Peoria
2. QC Kings
3. Advancers
4. IIT
5. Jolly Rovers
6. Chicago Giants
7. Jaguars
8. Evanston
9. Madison
10. Springfield
11. Lucky 11
12. CCI

Pre Quarter Finals Matchup
A. Jolly Rovers vs CCI
B. Chicago Giants vs Lucky 11
C. Jaguars vs Springfield
D. Evanston vs Madison

Quarter Finals Matchup
A. Peoria vs Winner of Evanston/Madison
B. QC Kings vs Winner of Jaguars/Springfield
C. Advancers vs Winner of Giants/Lucky 11
D. IIT vs winner of Jolly Rovers/CCI

Good Luck to All the teams heading to the Playoffs.

I hope that the management can quickly confirm the time and venue of the 1st round of playoff games for division 2. What doesnt make sense is that some division 1 games are scheduled to be played in WP this coming week, which means that either the division 2's playoff games which are always supposed to be played in WP might be pushed to other venues or in the worst case even postphoned by another week. The temperatures are already dropping to the 60's, one can just imagine how cold it will be in a couple of weeks. Looks like we will be playing with jackets and gloves in the semis and finals if the right action is not taken quickly.:)

Match Report – Chargers Vs. Challengers – 9th September 2007 @ WP # 2

Challengers won by 125 runs!

Chargers won the toss and elected to field…
Both their opening bowlers Rafi and Guddu (Irfan) were on target…..kept the opening pair at bay…didn’t give any room.

Guddu drew first blood as he induced an edge off of Shekhs to reduce challengers to 7/1 in the 4th over. Darshan played some nice shots before he was caught behind off of Iqbal.
Challengers were 39 for 2 in 8 overs or so.

Mahesh (80) and Nirav Patel (69) consolidated the innings for challengers with a solid 140 odd run partnership. Mahesh continued his good form with some scintillating shots.
Nirav too was in a devastating mood as he too joined the party hitting some big shots.

The middle order collapsed as the Siddiqui brothers ran thru the middle order reducing challengers to 187/7.

Another brilliant partnership between Bhavesh(19) and Gitesh(22) made sure Challengers made a respectable target, with some contribution from Mehul in the end.
Challengers were all out for 274 in 43.4 overs.

Chargers lost their opener in the first over, as Dax made him edge a ball to Mahesh.
Chargers lost another wicket soon. Sami the opener was threatening to look dangerous as he was scoring runs at a good pace. Chargers were scoring around 6 runs an over.
A brilliant runout from Bhavesh sent Rafi back to the pavilion. Kamran looked good with a nice six, pulling Nilesh over the midwicket, but Nilesh got him back a coupla balls later, had him caught behind.

Guddu and Sami consolidated for a while before Sami was bowled by Tushar.
Looks like Tushar worked on his Yorkers the last few weeks, as he picked a coupla wicket yorking the batsmen.

As soon as Nirav took a brilliant catch @ long off to dismiss Guddu, Chargers folded pretty soon for 149.

Good win for Challengers. We still need to work on our batting despite the big score.

IIT Vs NoStars Synopsis
______________________________

IIT won the match by 107 runs. A Brilliant 74 by Lakshmi and other useful contributions by other batters took them to 195 allout in 35.2 overs. This was a commendable performance by NoStars - considering they played with 9 players only .. which included 2 non-regulars.

NoStars were allout for 88. In fact, we gave IIT a tough fight with our score at one moment being 50/0 in 13th over. But we suffered a big collapse from 88/3 to 88/8 .. which was going to come sooner or later ..

Good Luck to IITians for the play-offs ..

Also one of the highlights of the match .. were three splendid catches from Tafazzul .. two of those one handed preventing sixers and getting Laksmi and another good batter out ...

The second was again and a one handed blinder running to his left on the boundary line...( Alpesh, this was the prize Wicket of Ajay Gandhi).

MCC - WC summary:

MCC won the toss and decided to bat first. Their openers did a great job and were going great guns, they lost thrie first wicket at about 50, IIRC. But then the WC spinners brought their team back into the game with Naren and Sanjay bowling wonderfully. Then Satish came in and got the crucial wicket of Asif and they were 70 for 4 at 20 overs. After that, the spinners continued to bowl well, Krishna got a few wickets, but MCC did reasonably well to reack 143.
As most of you know, this is not a bad score at Lincoln park, but definitely achievable. WCC lost 2 early wickets and soon were reduced to 40 for 3. After that Sumeet batted very sensibly and WCC were 71 for 4 at 20 overs, the game was poised for a close finish and thats exactly what happened.Sumeet got out right after the break and this brought Nikhil to the crease. Vikram and Nikhil built an excellent partnership. The MCC spinners were bowling well and it there werent many easy runs for the taking. WCC needed a run a ball in the last 5 overs with 6 wickets in hand, thats when Asif got the wicket of Vikram. Krishna followed soon after. Nikhil kept going at the other end. Naren came in and scored a few.Now WCC needed 14 from 2 overs and then 7 from the last. Nikhil got a single from tthe first, Naren got bowled the next ball which brought in rookie Gokul in a really tense situation.WCC enede up making 3 more runs in the over with Gokul getting run out off the last ball and Nikhil left stranded with an excellent effort in vain. MCC had won by 2 runs! Well played MCC and congratulations on being the no. 1 team!

Dear papa smurf,
I happen to know the person who created the website several years ago. I'm no techie either, but it doesnt take a techie to know how much hardwork this person put in to create the site we so take for granted now. You do bring up some good points but to say that picture on the site is pathetic is very petty of you. I dont know you and if you have done some work for MCC, then I apologize in advance, but if you havent, then please get off your high horse right now and spare us the whining.
If you really want to make a change, in addition to constructive criticism, get to actual construction.

Aditya said...

Papa Smurf,

I have to agree with Romeen on this one. I don't know details about the site, but I do know that whoever did it, did so voluntarily and I think did a pretty decent job at it. I think the problem is not with the site, but with how it is used. For example, I think it was purposely setup so that a team cannot change it's scores after a few days of the game so that teams don't make changes if a seeding depends on NRR to help themselves. Now, maybe some of these features are outdated or need improvement, and for that we need someone to "VOLUNTEER" to spend their free time to make these changes. Not an easy task.

Secondly, as for the asthetics, not all "techies" are visual geniuses. Give them the outline, and they can do it, but don't expect them to create a masterful outline, so do cut the original creator a break.

Aditya said...

On the Pak Gym vs Muslim Gym situation,

A decision has been taken and the guilty parties have been punished.

People should stop carrying on about Sohail and Tariq being biased or slow or unfair on this matter. In fact, people should probably apologize for judging them before they had a chance. They made a decision before the games this week which likely has impacts for the remainder of the season. Also, these are not professionals whose only job is to manage our league. That is something they do outside of their day job, and so it will take time to investigate and resolve the matter. Please give them some credit and be supportive instead of just criticizing people unfairly.

The only issue that I can see is that it hasn't been communicated clearly to everyone what that decisions is. I feel better communication would help, but that is my only suggestion as of now.

If someone does know what the repercussions are, could they let us all know.

Aditya said...

By the way, it's not that I am a supporter of any one person, nor am I a hater. I just believe that everyone should get a fair chance and not be judged unfairly. I do have some bones to pick about the way other things are handled, but I do think this issue was handled as best as it could be. I'm sure the other issues will be discussed and handled appropriately.

I'm sure communication instead of bashing would be constructive.

sitting at 28 points wid the negative run-rate and 1 more game to go which is against muslim gym...if they loose they r definitely not goin to make it to playoffs...n if they win against muslim gym they might have a chance makin it to playoffs but pak has to loose both of their games so rogers park can make it to playoffs...

United CC

if they win their match against Chargers they r in

Pak Gym CC

they don't have tough schedule but their 6 players have been suspended...some of them for the whole season and the rest for 1 or 2 i think...but they still got few players who can turn around...

SO I THINK WE CAN'T SAY ANYTHING FOR SURE UNTILL THE END....SO LET'S WAIT AND SEE.....

Preetam even I remember watching that match bw India and Pakistan in Asian Games final at National Stadium.

India was favourites and with likes of Zafar Iqbal and Mohammed Shahid "Biggest dribller" India was sure for Gold Medal but God know what happened that day.India lost by 7-1.

Mihir Negi as a goalkeeper was blamed for that....and for me as viewer I can also blame Negi as he never tried to save any goal which could had been saved to easily.....

Ajoy,

Thanks a lot for the game. You guys were good hosts and we have to complement you on your wonderfully managed and maintained ground. One can only hope that all MWCC grounds meet that standard some day soon.

Plus, the food at Priya was awesome, so we did enjoy our trip. Good luck to you guys.

It's back to depress mode now that Cricket is over for ICC for the year. Another Walk over saw that we did not make the playoff.
Good luck to all the teams in the P/O's.
Special thanks to them Evanston Boys and their family for hanging with us yesterday at the park.

Another beautiful day at the park as we took on chicago Cricket Club.
CCC won the toss and elected to bat first. Lost their opener in the first over..as usual bowled by me. Aaron got the next opener in hs first over and off the bat it was 2 for 1.
CCC lost wickets at regular interval with a few mini partnerships. Jack bowled superbly with speed and line as he got 3 wicket for 13, all bowled.
Our chase did not go as planned as we were quickly in tha same shoe as CCC. Lost wicket regularly and Aaron stupid run out did not help as we were quickly sitting good at 42 for 5 in the 8th over.
Then came Nokhram to join me.
It was a nervous first 6 overs for me as I play and missed about 20 times. It was the pressure of wanting to win so bad that my reactions were slow.
I hung in there and after a few runs the ball was like a basketball.
At 18 overs we were 93 for 5. got to 145 in 21.1 over. I was able to connect on a few bigones.
My teamates had to remind me that the season had ended not started??.
After the game we had lots of food and drinks.
Nothing to remorse about as we had a fun season.
That's ICC for you

Ramsundar Lakshminarayanan said...

oops sorry...I meant the All Star Bloggers game.

Ram,

Good questions. We're waiting on Romeen and Shiraz to see if there is any possibility in getting a game going.

Ramsundar Lakshminarayanan said...

Madew, you guyz achieved your objectives for this season...will your team's motivation level dip in the playoffs? Or, how will you motivate your team to win it all, with end result being the same?

Curious to know.

Hi Guys,

First of all, congratulations to Peoria and welcome to Division 1. It will be nice to play against Madhu and the guys again this year. We look forward to it.

Teams 1-12 on the Points Table are the final 12 for the Playoffs since not much will change after the update to the Points Table by the teams missing scorecards. We will definitley start Pre Quarters for Div 2 this weekend, with 2 games on Saturday and 2 Games on Sunday, played at Hanover Park and Heritage Park. If nothing changes, these will be the Match Ups:

Evanston Vs. CCI Sat @ Hanover
Jaguars Vs. Lucky Sat @ Heritage
Giants Vs. Springfield Sun @ Hanover
Madison Vs. Jolly Sun @ Heritage

These fixtures are possible scenarios and can change based on Ground Availability and Team Updates. I just wanted to drop a line and keep everyone up to speed so you can start getting in the mind frame and be prepared emotionally for a Playoff Game.

Chicago Giants, Jolly Rovers and CCI, please update your pending Scorecards by COB Today. Also please validate the schedule for the games on the Midwest Cricket website by end of day on Thursday.

Good Luck and Kind Regards,

Shiraz,

Thank you for the update. I know that all such communications and updates are appreciated by everyone and in fact encouraged as it keeps the rest of the league in the loop.

Hi Shiraz, I will disagree with your comment that current team standings will remain the same inspite of efforts to update the point table.

Chicago Giants and QC should get one additional point for a tied match and per Sadiq's comment earlier in the blog this needs to be update manually by someone from mgmt. That will change team standings significantly.

Also, it doesn't look like NRRs are accurate aswell.

Thanks for reading.

Can someone elaborate on why Anjuman/Pak Gym is re-scheduled for the 15th?
