the league getting Ground #1 back for the playoffs, it was
fun to have 4 meaningful games in progress at the same time
once again.
I was at Ground #3, umpiring Advancers and Evanston. Evanston
began well, but always lost too many wickets - they were 59/3
in 10 overs to start, and 83/5 in 20. Perrin was their main
performer again, hitting 64 or so out of 139 allout (he had
just hit 2 sixes and 16 off one over, carrying Evanston to
132/6 off 33 overs, when he was runout - and Evanston folded
for 139 soon after). Advancers bowling looked very solid -
Ram and Subashish formed a very effective opening pair, and
the 3 spinners bowled beautifully.
At breaktime we got updates from the other games too -
Milwaukee had collapsed against a rampant United pace attack
of Mehul and Yusuf, and were down to 47/6. CCI were being
held in check by IIT, reduced to 40/5 in 20 overs. And the
Wildcats were 90 odd for 4 in 20 overs. Eventually at lunch
we found that CCI had folded for 75, and the Wildcats got up
to 229 in their 45 overs. Milwaukee had folded for 54 - but
they reduced United to 18/4 in reply (so that was the game
some of us watched at lunch :-) Kabir had claimed 3 wickets
and Wade 1 - Wade was getting monstrous bounce (particularly
remember Mehul fending one off his throat!) However he also
had one go over the keepers head for 5 noballs, and then
Faisal hit him gorgeously for a massively long pulled six
over squareleg that effectively settled the issue.
Returned to umpire the Evanston/Advancers game - Evanston's
bowling is usually quite good, and it started well. They
induced a sitter of a catch second over that was put down,
then got the first wicket soon after. Shakir was dropped
behind soon after coming in as well. But then Shakir and
Khadri (both fasting all day) took over - the Hyderabadi duo
batted gorgeously, dispatching the bowling to all parts of
the field. By the time Shakir was dismissed for 50+, the
game was effectively over as a contest. Paul put the finishing
touches, Khadri remained unbeaten with a brilliant 60+, and
Advancers had looked awesomely good in winning by 8 wickets
with 20 overs to spare!
At the end of our game, we found that IIT had also won easily
in a handful of overs, and United had won their game by 5
wickets in the end. So it was down to one last game - the
first genuinely *good match* of the playoffs, Wildcats vs
Muslim.
When I got there (soon after hearing, with much joy, that
the Cubbies had won 8-0 and the hated Brewers had lost, now
giving the Cubs a 3.5 game lead), Muslim had just lost its
third wicket (Kamran caught at the boundary), and were 50/3
in 12 overs and it was game on. Mehmood and Afroze batted
brilliantly however - Mehmood in particular smacking 3 sixes
in a single over, and looking fantastic. A misunderstanding
(and a great piece of fielding) put paid to his innings
however - Romeen from the boundary to Satish the bowler, and
a direct hit at the batting end that found Mehmood short.
Afroze had things under control, however - it was only when
he holed out at the boundary (after a terrific knock) to
leave Muslim at 165/6 that the game appeared to be genuinely
up in the air again.
It was then that captain Farhat and Rizwan got together, for
a critical 35 run stand that pushed the game towards Muslim
again. The asking rate had crept up to 6/over, but Rizwan hit
2 *huge* sixes off Giri to get it under control again... before
a Giri slower ball clean-bowled him to end the over! It was
30 to win with 3 wickets in hand now (the runrate, after
Rizwan's pyrotechnics, down to less than 5/over however).
The game was now very evenly poised.
Once again, however, the skipper Farhat was involved in a
critical stand - this time with Arif. Once again Arif played
his natural game, playing the big shots, while Farhat kept one
end secure and made sure Satish (bowling beautifully and
searching for the elusive breakthrough) was played out
safely. Eventually Satish got his man, getting Arif to hole
out to Naren - but by then 25 vital runs had been added, only
5 were needed to win, and critically, Satish had run out of
overs.
With 5 runs needed in 2 overs (and 2 wickets in hand), Farhat
defended a ball or two, then dispatched a four over the
drawn-in field, a wide the next ball ended it. Farhat came
in with 70+ runs to win and the scoreboard will show he made
only 23 in the end - but that is where statistics can
sometimes lie, for that innings was worth as much as some
centuries. Entering with 70+ to win, securing one end,
sheparding the lower order, and eventually hitting the winning
runs - it was a Miandad-esque knock, and worth its weight in
gold.
The Wildcats are three-time champs for a reason, they are
probably the toughest team in the league - for a decade theyve
been the hardest team to beat once they put 200 on the board
in a playoff situation. They fought all the way as is their
wont, and came very very close to pulling it off again (but
for some missed catches they actually might have). But that
makes Muslim Gym's victory even more creditable - given the
situation and the opposition, this must surely be the best
win for their club in a decade, maybe ever.
With Purdue apparently beating Challengers (reports and
details from Hanover will be much appreciated!), a couple
of very intriguing semifinals are set - St Louis vs
Purdue, and Muslim vs United.
Overall, a very fun day at the old ballpark (except for the
fact that it had to be ruined by Rex and his gang's abysmal
show at night)!

BTW, does anyone know, have the night playoffs been definitely moved to this week? Talk was that they were next Monday and Tuesday to start with - but there was talk yesterday that they might actually be tonigth and tomorrow! Does anyone know for sure?
Also, are all the day-playoffs next Saturday? (There was talk that the Div2 semis are definitely next Saturday - is this true for Div1 as well?)
c8w
Sadiq,
Night Games have been scheduled for today and tomorrow, with the Final on Thursday.
I think the Div 1 Semi's are next Saturday but don't know for sure, don't know anything about Div 2 Semis. Shashi?
We did receive an email from Shashi that Div II semis are definitely scheduled for Saturday. This perhaps was done to give ample to time to all the teams to schedule their weekends....
Howdy Fellas!
Totally disappointing loss to Purdue in the QF has ended our season.
Purdue absolutely outplayed us in all departments, had a plan and executed it very well.
Purdue team deserves to write the match report and I dont want to take anything away from them.
As for us, the Challengers, we have a whole winter to ponder about what went wrong..
On the bright side...
We edged united in a Humdinger (borrowed the word from cricinfo) of a match to reach the finals of AL Tourney..!!
Boy, that was probably the best match I have ever played...
Sadiq, please write the report for this match, dont want to do any injustice to the game and the details..
Hats off to Mehul and his merry XI, what a game!!!
Good luck to all teams in SFs, both divisions!!!
Now I have a lot of time to pick and choose a game to watch..!!
Rup/Rom/Adi/Everybody, which one are we watching this weekend? :-)
Shekhs,
Welcome to the prediction group. I will admit, last week, I got all 4 predictions right - PCC, IIT, Giants, Advancers. Of course, I noticed you predicted the exact same thing as me.... so, I guess you did get them right as well. Good strategy!!! ;-)
I have family visiting this weekend, so I'm not going to be at any of the games. But I'm sure they are going to be real good. I'm looking forward to a United vs Purdue final. I believe I picked both of them as my "dark" horses earlier in the year.
Seems like although this wasn't a good year cricket wise, prediction wise I might be doing great ... depending upon this outcome.
Sheks
C'mon you don't have to so modest. I don't think we outplayed you guys in anyway. We got a few lucky breaks while bowling to win the game. I'll try to post a match summary sometime today but I am sure you can do a much better job.
Thanks Adi, I'm officially a predictor(dont know if that word exists) now, no more a contender..
Aiite, this time I'll change my strategy, not repeat the same prediction you made..
Div 1
Purdue Vs STL - Purdue
I dont think STL can handle the young Purdue team in WP. They'll outrun them in 1s, 2s...
No offense Ajoy and team..just my opinion!
United Vs. Muslim - Muslim
I think Muslim firepower is gonna explode in this game, and with the ever reliable Afroze, they might pull this one out..
No offense Faisal B and team..just my opinion!
Div 2
IIT Vs. Peoria - IIT
I think IIT will pull a close one out. Thinking they are more desperate to get to Div 1 than Peoria..
Advancers Vs. Giants - Giants
I smell an upset here....Advancers juggernaut might just stop right here...
Whatchya got Adi?
Vijay,
I can't be modest, even if I try to.. :-)
I'll let you write up our sad story.. :-)
Good luck this weekend...!
Sheks buddy...
We are just as desperate too man...:-) Jags had very good batting deep all the way...Bowling was little way ward otherwise they would have had us on the rope...But IIT is very good team and well balanced..we are very much looking forward to the challenge! We know 'Miracles' don't happen twice and this time around we aren't looking for any Miracles to happen either..:) Good luck to all semi finals teams...as party rolls on...
Cheers

PCC
Madew my man..
Sorry about that...I was just making predictions...
Although, I'll be supporting you guys this weekend.. :-)
I know you guys are gonna fight it out...no doubt about that..
will be a cracker of a game..
Seems like a cracker of a weekend!
4 good games..
Shekhs,
I am sure it will be a good game irrespective of the outcome.
Are you coming to WP?
if yes then do stop by.
Sheks...No issues man..:) I know you are our homie..bro..:) Common over with cold ones..We will make sure..your time will be worth spent..Rup maan..Common over..I just saw Raj only...It will nice to see all of you guys...!
Cheers
Madhu R
PCC
Ajoy,
With this kinda setup....4 crackers??
Absolutely, will be there...definitely will stop by...
Madew,
Definitely, cold ones are on me this time...Rup..
Shekhs,
Here are my predictions:
PCC vs Advancers in the Div 2 finals.
Purdue vs United in the Div 1 finals.
I think PCC and Advancers are going to be too strong to stop and now that PCC has some more experience at WP, they'll be even tougher.
I think Purdue will survive St Louis, though it'll be a great game. I think United's bowling will be able to deal some body blows to Muslim. Anyone noticed that over the last 2-3 games, Mehul's been on fire? 3-4 wickets every time and apparently some very hostile swing and pace bowling. I think United can smell their first Div 1 championship, and they are desparate for it.
Good luck to all.
I think United can smell their first Div 1 championship, and they are desparate for it.
===============================
We are so desperate that we have these games setup. First the Chargers and then Milwaukee. I will be calling Muslim Gym to see if we can agree on getting them under 100 :)
Those of you who did not show up to watch the night semi final, missed a hell of a game. It was decided in the last over. Congrats to Challengers and Nilesh for pulling a victory. 'Never under estimate the heart of a champion.'

Purdue vs Challengers - A brief match report (For more details, contact Sheks)
Purdue won the toss and decided to bat first. We got off to a pretty rocky start losing a couple of quick wickets with hardly 10 runs on the board. Appu idiotically ran himself out following an awful mix up with Ruchir in probably the second over while Chintan came back to the hut even before he had a chance to wake up. Ashwin joined Ruchir and both of them played extremely cautiously for a while. Meanwhile Daxx and Rupesh were bowling a great line and kept things real quiet. Soon after, Nilesh joined the party and got Ruchir out caught at cover point. At the break we were plodding with the score reading 88/4 in 22 overs. Ashwin and Sachin steadied things for us and had a nice partnership going. Sachin scored 46 and got out around the 34th over with the score around 150 +. Ashwin as usual played the steady hand for us with a well made 59 and the lower order added a few valuable runs and enabled us to post 232 runs in 45 overs. We were all out in 44.1 overs. While Nilesh was spectacular for Challengers, Bhavesh and Daxx were very economical and hardly gave away any freebies. Sanjay's absence probably hurt their bowling options. After the horrendous start we had, we were quite happy with the final total and thought we had a good chance to win the game.
Sheks and Darshan opened for Challengers. Darshan had a bye runner as he was suffering with a bad back and could hardly bend. Sheks was out in the third over with the score around 10 or 15. Nirav and Darshan had a nice and breezy partnerhsip before Nirav slashed one to point. The in form Mahesh was the next man in but was castled by a great ball from Ruchir and Challengers were in a spot of bother after losing a couple of quick wickets. But, they were consisently scoring at around 6 RPO and were never behind the required run rate. Tushar came in a quickly dispatched the bowling to all parts of the ground. But he seemed to be in a bit of a hurry and was lofting everyone everywhere!!! Darshan and Gitesh soon departed and we took a break at the end of 16 overs with the score around 90+/5. Tushar finally holed out after a quick fire 42 caught at deep mid wicket off the bowling of Pradeep. Challengers were quickly in real trouble losing wickets with one after the other chancing their arms one too many times. Meanwhile, Nilesh held things steady at one end and was joined by Rupesh for the last wicket with Challengers needing about 80+ runs in 23+ overs. They added runs steadily with our fielding and catching sinking to abysmal depths. The last pair added about 50 runs and Challengers needed another 40 odd runs in about 12 or 13 overs. Luckily for us Rupesh got out caught behind of an inside edge that popped up after hitting Ashwin's pad and then knee and whatever else!!! The last pair gave us a a real scare but fortunately for us we got a few lucky breaks (read rash shots to some deliciously served bad balls) to end up the winner.
The sad side note to the entire match was that we had only one neutral umpire.
I will be at the ground on Saturday.
Shekhs are you coming out?

What a game is right! One of the best games Ive umpired in a long long time - hard fought, clean, a consistently high level of cricket with fortunes fluctuating back and forth all evening, and a fantastic finish. Just awesome. My only regret is that, with the confusion about Night Semis being next week to start with, less than the usual number of people showed up to watch - they missed what they all would have geatly enjoyed, a truly fantastic cricket match.
United were somewhat depleted (missing Ruchir, Samarth and Nasir, 3 pretty regular Night-Cricket bowlers), they won the toss and batted, and went with the India/Australia model - start steady, and try and hit late. They lost Adnan in the first over (0/1), but Nipun and Ashwin had a good partnership - steady, and then building quicker. They were only 11/1 in 4 overs, but progressed to 91/1 in 13 before Nipun retired hurt for 27, and Ashwin was runout for 34. With the platform built, Sudhir exploded at the end murdering 3 sixes and 2 fours (and Mehul joined the party with 13 off 7, including a terrifc straight six off Nilesh.. something to remember for later :-) as United piled on 57 runs in the last 5 overs to get up to a very competitive 161. Sanjay with 4 overs for 25 was probably the outstanding bowler on the day.
Challengers, also depleted (missing their prolific opener Darshan), started disasterouly. Mehul, who has been in roaring good form the past couple of weeks, bowled a fantastic first over (beat Bhavesh 3 times in a row outside off, then conceded a single, and proceeded to clean bowl Sheks with his patented inswinger). When Chintan followed up by having Bhavesh well caught behind on his first ball, Challengers were 1/2 and in deep trouble. Mahesh and Daxx repaired the damage, carrying Challengers to 68/2 in 8 overs and suddenly in command (ahead of the rate, and with wickets in hand).
Once again the game swung, however - the United spinners (Altaf and Nipun) got both set batsmen in consecutive overs to set the Challengers back (it was now 71/4). Tushar fell soon after to Altaf and it was 82/5 in 11 overs. However by this time Altaf was bowled out - he was clearly United's best bowler on the day, with remarkable figures of 4-0-17-2. Nirav Patel survived a huge shout for caught behind, but when he fell runout an over later for 26 the Challengers were down to 99/6 in 14 overs and looked down and out.
For a long time now, however, Nirav Amin has been the "closer" for the Challengers - the coolest head, the batsman who invariably comes thru in the crunch (few will forget his 99 after the Challengers were 26/6 in the playoffs a few years ago - an innings which won the quarters and eventually led to a title-win). Yesterday was no different - he stepped up and began rectifying the situation. This was also when United's shortage of bowlers was beginning to tell - especially without Ruchir and Samarth, they had to find overs from a fifth bowler. They were using Adnan and Gopi who were being taken for runs, and still having to bowl very late in the game. Still, when Rupesh fell to Gopi, United seemed to be getting away with it - the Challengers were now down to 117/7 in 16 overs, needing 45 in 4 overs with Nilesh joining Nirav Amin and only 1 over of the fifth bowler was left.
Mehul bowled the next over, and Nirav chanced his arm - an edge flew away just past short-thirdman for four, and 2 legbyes came off an overthrow. It was down to 35 off 3 overs. And this was when the lack of a fifth bowler really told - United were forced to put Gopi in a very difficult situation, bowling very late in the day, and 3 wides and a six contributed to 14 being conceded off a huge over.
So, it was down to 21 in 2 overs -the situation had gone from United being in control to once again a fifty-fifty game. Mehul went past Nirav's edge, then had him caught next ball - 2 dot balls and a big wicket, 141/8, 21 to win off 10. Nilesh, now on strike, murdered a full-length ball down the ground - a terrific effort by Gopi in the deep kept him down to two. Mehul once again went past Nilesh's bat next ball - he had bowled spectacularly well all day - 19 off 8 now, and the game tilting once again towards United.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man, they used to say. One of the league's best bowlers had the ball in hand... Mehul bowled a good-lenght ball, and Nilesh pulled him.. he didnt seem to hit it perfectly, a slight top-edgy-ness to it maybe, but it still went well over the boundary at midwicket for six! So, seeing the slight mis-time, Mehul bowled a slower ball... and Nilesh waited back, picked it, timed it to absolute perfection, pulling it over the practice nets and almost into the water at Hanover Park. Probably the best (and certainly the most important) hit Ive seen all year.
It was down to 7 off 6 in the last over, with Chintan taking the ball. Bobby stole a single first ball - 6 off 5. Nilesh swung and missed next ball well outside off - a marginal delivery that, IMHO, was just close enough to not be wided. The next ball was closer to the stumps, faster, and swung - Nilesh swung and missed again.. it was now 6 off 3 balls. Chintan varied his pace again next ball... and this time Nilesh hit him almost into the road and it was all over.
One of the most spectacular pieces of batting in ages - with Nilesh's team 8-down and needing two runs a ball, he hit 3 sixes out of the 8 balls he faced to win it. Given the situation (a semifinal) and the opposition, it was one of the greatest displays Ive seen in ages. By consensus Nilesh has long been regarded as of the best pacemen in the league...I'll go further, IMHO I'd suggest he is one of the best *cricketers* in the league, period.
Thanks to both teams - for three-and-a-half hours yesterday evening they provided us a pulsating cliffhanger of a cricket match that it was a genuine pleasure to get to watch from close quarters. If we get one more game anywhere close to this sort of quality the rest of the year in either day or night playoffs, I think we'll have to consider ourselves really lucky.
