Week 11 - Predictions and Results

In order to facilitate all discussions, we have decided to separate the discussion threads. If you want to talk about political hot-topics, then there will be a thread for that. If you want to talk about week 9 predictions, results, and other discussions.

If we see comments starting to spill over, we will be forced to monitor and censor them in order to keep the discussions separate. Note, the goal is not to prevent or suppress any form of discussion, but instead to facilitate all types of discussions.

This thread is for predictions for week 11, results for week 11, and other related topics.

You have really made the scorecard as informative as possible.... Great job

Guest_rule said...

Aplesh, Please maintain the archives of all CERs and also if possible from pervious years if available.

Thanks

Thanks Shiva Sir ... I hope I did confirm myself as the best scorer in the MWCC league :-) Agree Sadiq Sir??
Anyways, made a small mistake, the total # of balls played by us should add to 219, but in the scorecard it adds to 218.

Any predictions for weekend games ...
We are playing Jaguars again. This time they will have their full-strength team and plus we are missing Faraz's services .. so this should be an interesting battle ..

I agree this would be a great thing if possible.. but so far I think even this years CER scorecards arent available to Alpesh, leave alone last years! Alps was looking for them online with little luck so far... there might be a couple of cellphone pics of partial cards somewhere Alps..

FoD,

Where did you disappear to? Thoughts on Div 1? Except for the top 4 teams, everyone is pretty closely bunched. Not clear who will join them in the playoffs.

Div 2 race looks interesting. I think the Milw P vs Arena game will be critical in the race to Div 1, but the rain could end up playing spoilsport. RPCC looks like they have suffered this unfortunately.

Aditya said...

Thirty-30 looks a lot more defined. Yes, the last 1-2 spots will be a tight race, but 6-7 spots look pretty clear.

Nighthowlers seem to be winning on the back of their bowling/fielding. Defense wins championships - hope they can keep it up all the way till the end. :)

Don't think we're out of the race for the top spot just yet, there a lot more games to go sir!

Ajoy Lal said...

I agree with Asmar, Abhi Delhi bahut door hai Aditya sir.
But it is very interestingly poised.

I think it will boil down to Arena, Milwaukee, RPCC and Titans.

Yes we are working hard on the batting "strategies". Our Div I stars are not clicking ;)

Eagles vs Rovers - Eagels
Laxmi scores 175 ( jinxd him now ;)

Bears vs Purdue - Bears

Muslim Gymkhana vs Flames - Muslim
Fahad duck out (anti Jinx :)

CCI vs Challengers - Challengers
Dharshan goes crazy and win by 100+

St. Louis vs Peoria - Peoria
Sohail goes on a rampage but not enough :)

United vs AAA - AAA

Milwaukee vs Phoenix - Milwakee
Homefield advantage

Other predictions for the weekend: 10 dehydrate, 3 faint and 1 person quits playing cricket for good.

All the best to all teams !!

Folks,

How's the ground in hammond, indiana? We are playing our first game there tomorrow..I see they seem to produce high scores...fats outfield? Small boundaries? Can anyone talk abt ur experience in that ground and pitch?

Alpesh said...

Dinesh ... The astro-turf is new there. The ground has fast outfield and so you can definitely go out there and score a century. But beware of Laxmi, he scored a century there off just 42 balls last year ...

tatabybycy: I agree upon two things in your predictions

1. CCI vs Challengers - Challengers
2. 10 dehydrate, 3 faint and 1 person quits playing cricket for good

I choose the other teams for the rest of your predictions. :)

tatabybycu said...

Dinesh,
Hammond is how a field should be - good cricketing shots in the gap will fetch plenty of runs. Field placing, catching and fielding are important. flat pitch, and an old ball thats not doing much will kill the bowlers.. its a batsman's paradise.

underdog,
I think all of the games are good contests.. but think Peoria, Chall and Mil will be on top. I would like for the Eagles to win.. will make the table more interesting :)

Aditya said...

looks like the weather was real nice today. Any updates on the games?

Hope no-one quit cricket for good!! :)

Madew said...

Both Peoria and JR won today.

JR scored 302 with everyone chipping in with 30's and 40's ..Eagles scored 240 or so..Karthik made a century..I am sure one of the JR guys will post more...

Peoria Scored 188/9 in 40 overs and St. Louis scored 139 all out..Kalyan got 3 wickets, Kiran got 3 and Yousaf -2, Ravi - 1 ..Peoria was under pressure at 85/5 in 20 overs but recovered well for 188/9 a decent score in 40 overs. Kalyan chipped in with 39..MOM is Kalyan for this game..:-) Go PCC..

Alpesh said...

Titans lost to Jaguars badly by 7 wickets. We collapsed from 58/1 to 96 allout. And Jaguars chased it in the 25th over. Need to enough soul searching before next Saturday.

Dinesh_Rovers said...

Thanks Madew...yup we won by abt 50 runs..we batted first and scored 302. Dinesh, yogi, vishnu scored 50 each.. prashanth scored 42.

We got off to a great start bowling them and had them at 1 for 3 wkts with Nandan, laxmi and subbu gone..we thought we had the match in the bag, but karthik hit one of the most effortless, great timing hits for a well made 106..

They lost wkts at reg intervals and fell short by 50 finally..

Good luck to eagles the rest of the way..

Madew said...

Alpesh,
Don't worry too much..you guys are good team..may be a one off day..u guys have been playing well..u just have to learn a lesson or 2 and move on to the next one..By the way..Salman has been coming to our practices here at Mossville..He is quickie and has nice nip..I heard u guys don't use him as a bowler..give him the new ball..see what he can do..;-) he has been consistently bowling in our sessions has been putting our bats into uncomfortable spots. He hits good spots in our practices..He just needs little bit direction and experience.. He is young and quick..he needs to adapt conditions thats all..just wanted to give you a heads up..Give luck to Titans team..

Guys!!

I was involved in an incident in the Eagles Vs Rovers game yesterday. We got a wicket in the first ball of the 20th over. I was the captain yesterday and I wanted the opponents new batsman to come and face the remaining 5 balls.

The umpire got off the bails and called it a break and when I objected, he did not agree with me..He said this is the MCC rule. Is it true??

In the last 3 years, many teams have made us bat the remaining balls in the 20th over if a wicket had fallen. Infact, 3 weeks back, our batsman went to face the last 3 balls and he got out in the same over too :(

Alpesh said...

Madhu Sir, Thanks for the kind words and the advise. Yes, I heard about Salman from Sadiq Sir and Ram at Detroit. I will try to get him bowl as much more as possible. And hope he lives to the promise he has started showing.

Dinesh, I do not believe there is such rule, but it up to umpire's discretion. Let us just follow his guidelines for now until a rule has been established in written.

Even in our match yesterday, an interesting incident happened. Jaguars were close to their victory and Salman was bowling to Shahmeer. The ball was an in-swinger for Shahmeer (LHB) and he was soundly beaten. Our keeper gathered the ball and he felt that there was a snick and started appealing loudly and then few other players of my team joined him. The Umpire at which gave the batsman out. The batsman felt that there was no snick and showed his displeasure strongly and was walking back. The umpire suddenly felt that he made a mistake and decided to call back the batsman. My team at first resisted this, but eventually accepted the decision. Such things rarely happen in cricket. but I feel that it requires courage from the umpire to overturn his own decision and I admire that courage.

Unknown said...

Alpesh -

My request to you stay away from Mr. Madhu's and Sadiq Baba's advice. They screwed midwest team and now they are after your team.

Madhu is talking of fast bowler - wow(line, length, good spot). Madhu, do you know that much about fast bowling? Where were you whne Sadiq Baba selected CER team? Were you part of committee? Seems like you know too much about cricket!

Good wins for JR, Bears, MG etc.

Unknown said...

During international games, I have seen, if the wicket falls and if the drinks break is near, umpire(s) call for the drinks. It is up to the umpire. Player or the team does not have any authority to say otherwise.

I umpired two games recently and I will do the same. I will take a break.

Madew said...

Blogger,
why don't u elighten us? We still have one or 2 things we can still learn from you I suppose. You definitely sound like elightened one who breathes, sleeps and wakes on cricket :-)But one advice I can give you is to join the selection committee. I am sure sant Sadiq baba would bless himself to have u on board and hear out what all you have to say? Did you hear Bangladesh beat ENG today? Any team can beat any team on a any day..so take your cribs some where else. Our TEAM did well in the finals just batting was little bit in disarray on that day! If you want to persecute the team for it be MWCC guest. Your perception is your reality I have nothin to say. Peace out!

The scheduling is based on multiple factors:

a. Seeding
b. Travel games
c. Previous year schedules
d. Ground availability
e. Team requests

Can't quite recall any other factors as of now.

the international rule is that if a wicket falls within two minutes of the break, the batsman doesn't have to come out. That typically means that if a wicket falls in the last over before break, batsmen can ask for a break by the law. Anything else is up to the discretion of the umpire

This issue was brought up earlier but no action was taken... What is being done to make sure all teams enter their stats online.. It seems when teams dont win , they would rather not enter their stats.. Some teams are repeat offenders from last year. This means that none of the fielders who take catches or keepers get credit at all

Alright its prediction time for this weekend game. Call the experts.

Tatabybycu: Last time you had a good run with the prediction. 5 out of 7 Div 1 games. Let’s see how many you have this time. Pressure is on you to improve.

I guess we are yet to fix the point table. Incorrect # of games/win/lose/points in the point table for a couple of teams.

Muslim vs Wildcats : Muslim
(Imran 54 no)
Flames vs Chargers : Flames

Fenders Vs Warriors: Warriors
Advancers Vs Devonshire: Advancers
Hustler XI Vs Chicago Cricket Club: CCC

DeePark XI Vs Chicago Hawks: DeePark
South Barrington Vs Chicago Super Kings: SB

I will leave out Nighthowlers Vs Trail Blazers :)

Tata byby cu,

That's pretty darn specific. Next, you'll be giving us scorecards and we'll have to rename you Paul - the octopus!

Can I trade in my 77 n.o for a Phoenix win? Maybe just 51 n.o or 77 out with a Phoenix win? We need it a lot more than the Rovers do!!! :)

Unknown said...

Shekhs: Challs might be playing tatabybycu's team this week. Otherwise how come he chose Challs winning last week.

Tatabybycu, we are going to track you down baby. BTW, your predictions are getting closer to “The Octopus” level. Are you going to change your name to “The Octopus”? hehe.

Unknown said...

Mitul seems to be scared of somebody from Nighthowlers or Trail Blazers :)

Shekhs said...

yeah underdog...looks like tatabyby has something to do with Eagles....hahaha.

bleh said...

@tatabybycu - what do you mean by "small ground" for Purdue vs. St.L ? Did Purdue change their ground to a smaller one from before? The old field at Purdue wasn't what one would call "small"?

tatabybycu said...

Aditya,

I wish you well on the way to a well made 77 :) I think I should just go ahead and fill out some of these score cards randomly. Wait a minute...... actually that may be a good idea. We fill out scorecards randomly and assign wins randomly.. that way the captains have an incentive to login and correct them :)

Sheks,

I picked Eagles keeping in mind Challs long term interest. As the team on the pole position you should be relieved if you loose this game. Beacause, If you keep winning then you will become overconfident, which could result in a terrible 2nd half this season. Now, you dont want that do you?.. think about it and discuss this with other in your team.(Preetam, where is my cut.. I am working hard for you here :)

Finally good to be talking light on the blog.. but I still have concerns with some who "know what they are doing".. and we should just bend over.

tatabybycu said...

bleh, I thought Purdue changed grounds for good.. or was it a short term thin?

Please confirm with them before you drive down this weekend from STL :)

Shekhs said...

hahaha...yeah...tatabyby...now you're talking like our kapitan buchia...

we definitely dont want to be overconfident..

Dinesh_Rovers said...

Good one tataby..yup..these challengers remind me of the 2007 new england patriots...going after 16 and 0..winning most games in 22 overs or so...I hope they go 18 and 1 finally...hehehee...also, I hope they don't record any rovers games and our signals ;) hahha...

Is the new set of balls the same for everyone: Grade-A? I dont think these ones are as good as the ones we used last year. I dont remember which make it was last year.. but they seemed better.

Also, is it the umpires responsibility to make sure both teams use the same manufacturers ball.. are there any such rules?

Alpesh said...

ICML won their first game against WildCats tonight by 3 wickets.

For WildCats, Ajit scored 66(51) and Romeen 44*(33). Adam Sanford bowled beautifully and it was a great sight to see the chin music. Their Spinner Andre too bowled well.

For ICML, their Captain scored 63(41). Varun and Javed bowled well claiming 3/37 and 2/19 respectively.

The scores are uploaded.

Tomorrow, Imran Nazir and Naisr Jamsheed are going to play for ICML against Chargers.

Alpesh said...

Praveen,

Yes, the general feedback about the last set of balls given out has been really bad.

A team can use any ball given by the league. I am not sure about the rule, but it makes sense if both the teams use the same kind of ball for the match.

tatabybycu said...

Alpesh and Co,

Not to take anything away from bowlers who bowl well with the new ball, but the ball does have an influence and makes it slightly unfair.

I find it odd that the league would permit this? Especially if a set of balls is supplied each year. I think this has to be fixed with as an amndmnt in the rules... what do you guys think?

So is everyone using Grade A? I presume the answer is yes.

Alpesh said...

Praveen,

Please ignore my previous comment, early morning blues :-). I meant to say that both the teams should be using the same kind of ball.

Unknown said...

Balls are back ;)

I believe mgmt should send out an email to all teams + umpires, indicating both the teams MUST use same ball given this year be it first or second set of balls. At the lest, it will prevent conflicts.

Do you see any international game played by two different types of balls? Answer is No.

This is my view only.

Yes the guy (Adam S) bowled with very good pace and bounce BUT top order (Nikhil/Sathish) played very well as well. It was a good game even though we lost.

Weather looks very good for cricket!!!

Mitul,

What was it like playing against Adam Standford and the others? Was he really very quick? Or was he just taking it easy on you guys? Their batting seems to have done really well - did they win easily, or did they sweat a little bit?

Could this weekend be the first loss for the red hot nighthowlers?

Unknown said...

Unfortunately I didn't get to bat. For us, only three wickets fell (one run out).

From what I have seen in MCC so far (no offence to anyone), I believe he had more pace and bounce BUT as I said, he didn't get a wicket in 4 overs. Nikhil and Ajit played him very well. May be he didn't give his 100% but that is up to him ;)

It was a close game as they chased 150 with 7 down, I believe. Few balls fell in no man's land for us and we also missed 1 or 2 catches, which could have made a difference (they also dropped few). Catches win machtes!!!

For Nighthowlers, I believe we can get to 8-0. Left arm fast debutant for NightHowlers ;)

Phoenix lost to Rovers by 5 wickets. Rovers seem to be a very balanced side with a good bowling line up backed by a deep batting line up. Ravi is a dangerous proposition and hits the ball clean. Titans were outplayed by Springfield on Saturday.

SCC scores 253/6 in their 40 overs with Madan top scoring with 64 and rest all batsman chipped in with 25-30s. Shoddy catching by Titans did not help their bowlers to restrict the opposition on a very hot and humid day.

Titans were allout for 193 in the 37th over. Tafazzul played a great knock of 85 off 72 balls. Salman(33) and Ahsan(25) too made useful runs. Sapan from SCC bowled well to give only 24 runs of his 8 overs.

A special mention about SCC that they have made Sapan their Captain this season. Sapan is 20 years old and this early responsibilities may make him a great future leader.

Yes, he had a v good game - got 36* with the bat at the death too, ending the innings with a big six. And bowled very well. He's really improved rapidly over the past couple of years.

It was a good game, but v difficult with the heat etc. Titans had an early wicket, and dropped 2-3 catches in the first few overs.. that could have changed the game. Once Springfield got 253 in 40 overs on such a hot day, it was always going to be an uphill battle IMHO. Terrific innings by Taffazul though.

Dinesh - not sure about Saturday, Alps and me didnt make it either, since we were on the way back from Springfield and it got too late.

There was a pretty good crowd on Friday and Sunday nights, however. Sanford bowled terrifically on Friday, getting 5 wickets in his 4 overs, with 2 clean-bowled IIRC. And then Nasir and Yasir Jamshed got 92* between them to win by 10 wickets, with some terrific shots.

Last night, before a very good and loud crowd, Flames gave ICML a real battle, terrific game. Fahad batted brilliantly for 70 at the top, terrific opening stand with Jason (it was 50/0 in the 8th over IIRC, 59/0 after 10). Then Kiran was magnificent when he came in - hit Adam Sanford back over his head for a brilliant six! Sanford was charged up, responded with a couple of very quick bouncers.. and then the predictable fullpitched ball followed, and Kiran promptly hit that for an even bigger six, launching it over longon onto the street! Awesome batting.

Sanford eventually got both Kiran and Fahad though, and then Nasir Islam bowled a wonderful double-wicket-maiden for the final over of the innings, so Flames ended with 142.

In reply ICML started quick, with Yasir Jamshed in particular batting very well. Nasir, the international, joined in with a brilliant flicked/pulled six off Quentinm, awesome shot. Then our Nasir got their Nasir bowled :-) ICML was in control run-rate wise, 90 in 10.. but Flames kept chipping away with wickets (including one of the best catches ever from Sikander, a running diving one-hander near longoff), got ICML 6-down, and they needed like 18 off 4 overs etc. ICML finally got home with 8 balls to spare. Terrific effort by the Flames overall, a few more breaks, a few more runs, and they could well have had the game.

So 2 really tight games for the international stars of ICML out of 4 - Wildcats put up 149 in 20 in GameOne, and lost by 3 wickets with also 8 balls to spare IIRC. Overall a terrific scene at Hanover - people coming in to watch, some terrific cricket played, and good competitive matches.

Dinesh - for like the finals etc, you guys should come down.. its a very fun evening :-)

This happened in Detroit.

================================
Let me put the whole incident in sequential manner.
After 12 overs, the Captain of the fielding side informed that Muthu is dehydrated and wants to get some water. I said OK and waited for him to return
after the short break. But he took a minute extra which forced me to continue with the game since we were running behind schedule. I informed the same thing to the bowler that he can't enter in to the field in between the over to which bowler agreed and we resumed the play. Immediately after one or two balls Muthu wanted to return to the field, but I said after the over. As per the rules of the game we need to have a drinks break after every 14 overs. But I called
drinks break after 13 overs since on the last delivery of the over a wicket fell and my intention was to make some time in the change of batsmen.
After the stipulated 10 mins drinks break, I asked the teams to get on to the field. At that time one of the player from the fielding team informed me that
Muthu was having chest pain extending to left arm and also nausea sensation and another player will be taking him to hospital. I advised instead of taking him
to hospital call 911 which will give him immediate medical attention which may not be possible when you take Muthu to hospital. In mean time Muthu informed
that he is feeling better and one of his teammate gave him Aspirin 80mg (kids dose), 3 pills and also advised him to eat a banana. He ate the banana and the
pills. After taking confirmation from him that he is OK, we resume the play advising him to sit on bench.
As the 14th over progressed Muthu was walking from bench to car, talking on the phone etc. Some of his team mates were asking him if he was OK and he was
saying, he is OK. At the end of the 14th over when we were switching sides Muthu suddenly shouted for help and fell down on the ground.
Immediately, I called 911 and every player rushed to him to see what happened. He was on the ground breathing heavily and lying on the ground. Every body was in panic situation and did not know what to do. There were couple of medically trained persons in the form of physical therapist, they tried call out his name
and tried to make him bring into conscious and few talking to 911 giving directions of the ground ( you know how the ground does not a house address, it
has only cross streets and players go there based on exp). Mean time Muthu was unable to breathe freely and there were large intervals between his exhale and inhale cycles, which we could notice that there was no movements of stomach area. He was also sticking his tongue out. Everybody was talking about CPR but nobody could remember the procedure in that panic state, even the trained physical therapists. (So basically no CPR provided to Muthu). So may be after a
minute Muthu stopped breathing and stuck his tongue just out and everybody could realize that he stopped breathing.
The ambulance arrived within 5 mins from the time we made a call. The para medic staff arrived and tried to stroke his heart and they found no response. They
shifter him to the ambulance and not sure what they did inside for about 15 mins as no one was allowed inside. Finally they said they could not revive his
breathe so shifting to hospital and we asked to follow the ambulance to the close by hospital Mclaren Hospital in Flint.
All the players were dumb stuck, agreed to call of the game and proceed to hospital.
At the hospital we were kept waiting for more than an hour without any update (as per law only the close family members would be informed by the hospital
staff). In mean time his wife was informed about the situation and she was driven to the hospital by Muthu's friend. Later he was pronounced dead due to
heat stroke resulting in cardiac arrest.

A simple rule is to allow 3 water breaks rather than 2, and allow as many little breaks as possible in between overs to keep people hydrated.

if we go beyond the hour that is fine, life is more precious than an hour lost..

Umpires are you guys reading !!!

bleh said...

I don't mean to be callous here, but - it is up to the individual to realise that life is more important. A couple of years back -three footballers collapsed on the field and died, that didn't mean that FIFA started playing with three sessions of 30 min each.

As of now, the umpires are very lax with respect to overs and breaks - I don't think there is any necessity to incorporate legality into this.

And frankly, some teams out there work their asses off on fitness, mandating more breaks for entire teams will only nullify that advantage and decrease the quality of cricket in the league.

I believe there must be guidelines and it must be left to the teams and individuals to follow them.

bleh said...

Following on, it IS a sport, meaning it is supposed to be a test of fitness too along with skill and composure. Before we take an emotional decision, it makes sense to and decide if taking fitness out of the equation completely is apt.

It is more important to recognize the symptoms of danger and act accordingly. Therefore, there should be a guideline that at least one member in each team should have training in EMT and trauma response

Dinesh_Rovers said...

Bleh,

You quoted about the soccer players. They are all professionals and they train every single day and make millions of dollars to do what they do.

We are mostly amateurs who make our like livelihood elsewhere. I agree fit teams shouldnt be punished, but we should use common sense rules and guidelines.

If its such a hot and humid day with temps over 100, some of our umpires insist on bowling 15 overs an hour and complain when we get water from the leg umpire after every over. Do we need to be that harsh and what do we acheive by doing so, is my question..

whats the big deal in going home at 730 rather than 7?? Atleast you get to go home alive :)

Unknown said...

This is a good discussion.

It is very sad that this happened. Fitness, medical history, etc, etc might have played their part, not only dehydration. But I do somewhat agree with bleh. I might have send 10-15 emails (before the season started till now) to NightHowlers asking everyone to workout and be on top of their fitness to cope with this extreme energy demanding weather.

Agree that we play for fun but we must not make emotional decisions.

naren said...

No matter how much you train/workout extreme heat is going to get you with dehydration.

This is the second case i have seen when people were falling on the ground because of heat and had to be taken to hospitals.

I do not think this is an emotional decision, and it has to do more with the heat.

If a rule comes it only makes sense for games played when the temp are more than 90, and not when they are less than 90.

Since we are not playing professional cricket, even if you send 100 emails no one is going to workout Mitul unless they want to from within.

So it might be a simple idea to implement 3 water breaks, and allow for in between over drinks if they can do it fast before the fielding is set.

ice_cold said...

Adnan,
Do you know the physical condition of player who passed out, if he was sick or dehydrated before the game started?

I think we should make a rule here that if the temperature is above 80 or 85 degrees, Umpire, Batting side or fielding side can request three breaks. This way if ANY of the three sides feels it's too hot, they can get a break and come back.

Unknown said...

I am not saying don't allow drinks break etc. So far, I have not felt a day where it is too hot, at least in Chicago area playing 30/30. I believe, it is more demanding for 40/40 just because of the length and better standard of Div I/II (no offence to fellow 30/30 teams).

If a straight forward rule is not in place, I am sure players will take advantage of the situation. There will be lots of cramps/by runner situations (very likely in 40/40) not just because of dehydration.

Additional drinks break might makes sense. Umpire can just announce it upfront before the game starts.

Alpesh said...

On a lighter note ... since it was found that boozing speeds up the dehydration ... we should have a dui like test and if a player is found to have consumed drinks the previous night, they should be disallowed from playing ... :-)

Shekhs said...

Fellas,
Ok, since we have our own case of heat stroke and dehydration, which a few of us witnessed, I'll illustrate that.

I (yes me, your president) was hospitalized due to a seizure on the field, where I collapsed and was convulsing. I was drinking the previous night and also the lack of sleep didnt help much either.

The primary reason I had the seizure was because I was low on electrolytes. Now, I'm not in a bad shape physically, but I pushed my limits and abused myself.

So the point here is that, it doesnt matter how fit you are, its how you take care of yourself, before, during and after the game.

Primarily, make sure you keep yourself hydrated. Alcohol dehydrates your body, period. so if you'd been drinking, then make sure you drink extra amount of water and gatorade, as your body needs to replenish the electrolytes.

This incident happened with me while I was playing the diversity cup in Michigan. Naren, Adnan and a few others saw all this unfold.

Personally, I think i learnt my lesson, but we all should make a note of it.
Also, carry your own setof gatorade and water all the time, as sometimes we run out of our team quota.

A qualified and trained CPR person in every team is a good idea. Also, keep the CPR mask alongwith your first aid kit, so that, folks have no issue performing the CPR, instead of mouth to mouth.

If somebody is uncomfortable, take him to the ER, dont hesistate.

Thanks
Shekhs

=======================

Are you saying Bhavesh should be banned permanently? :))

bleh said...

Ice_cold and naren :

Then how do you stop people from gaming the system? What if to break the momentum, teams start asking for more breaks? What if one team wants to break, but the other doesn't ?

I don't know who the umpires in your games have been, but all those I've seen so far have been very sensible - They do make allowances for heat, leg umpires keep providing batsmen drinks every over, and fielders who feel thirsty also ask for drinks almost every over. That is why the over rates we see in this league are closer to 10-11 per hour than the international 15 per over (even after small run-ups of most of over bowlers)
If you want to push for 2 breaks of 10 min each, say at 15 and 30 over marks, are we going to push teams to bowl 15 overs in an hour?
And please don't be a wuss, 80-85 is less than 30 degree centigrade. Go over body's internal temperature 98F- then we're talking.

As it is, we start games at 11- 11:15 and end up playing on until 7.

naren said...

Bleh I am not saying that a rule be in place for all games. No only games for which the temps are going beyond 90.
For any rule you come up with there are always holes for people to use, but we can still look at the big picture of saving a life by being careful than be rigid.

Dinesh_Rovers said...

Bleh,

Also 2 breaks or whatever should be decided during the toss with the umpire..it will be the same for both the teams and so the question of trying to break the opponents rythm doesn't arise if its already agreed upon..

Also, we are talking abt weather of more than 90 and a very humid day...

Friends:

It is my pleasure to share with you the news that our CER Under 15 boys have won the 3rd position among 8 competing teams at the recently concluded USACA National Under 15 Tournament held at New Jersey between July 15th and 18th.

The eight teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each team will play for the top 4 spots. The first teams from the two groups fought for 1 and 2 and the 2nd teams from the two groups fought for the 3rd and 4th spot. We were positioned 2nd in the group as we lost one of the 3 games, this was against New York.

Overall we won 3 out of the 4 matches our team played.

The match for the third spot was keenly contested, we were all out for 118 in 39.3 overs and got the oppositioned bowled out for 112 in 38.4 overs.

As the coach of the team, I feel extremely delighted to let you all know that we have identified few exceptional talent who are ready for the next level.

Please join me in congratulating the team on its achievements.

Aditya said...

Bleh, Dinesh,

I agree with both of you. Precaution must be taken, but if we put in breaks, then it favours certain teams which are less fit that others. It's very similar to saying we should decrease the boundary size because people can't throw from the deep. Fitness, fielding, etc are the advantages that a team can work on.

However, safety is a big concern too. If it's a 70 degree day, and the fielders keep taking a 5 min water break at the end of every two overs, then there is an issue and the umpire has a right to nag them. If it's a 90+ degree day, then teams can agree on a drinks break schedule with the umpire before hand, and having drinks in between isn't such a bad idea.

I don't think we should put rules around this - let common sense prevail. But at the same time, we must put safety in mind first. I think guidelines would be a good idea.

Aditya said...

Next thing you know, we'll be mandating breathalizer tests and stomach purges. Most of us are adults, and you just have to let people manage themselves. Guidelines are good, but if your team is fitter than mine, then why should you suffer because I can game the system?

The big problem in the story was that they didn't recognize the heart attack.

Muthu was having chest pain extending to left arm and also nausea sensation and another player will be taking him to hospital.

It's not about dehydration, it's the heart attack. This guy wasn't fit (in terms of heart condition) and when there was a problem, no one noticed it and took the right action. The heat and dehydration just added to the issue.

It is very tragic, but all those people on the field who didn't do the right thing and played on, including poor Muthu, are to blame for this.

Aditya said...

Dinesh,

It was really nice playing you guys. The Rovers really are a fun, competitive, sporting lot and we enjoyed playing against you. Looking forward to next time, where hopefully we can turn the tables on you.

Wish you all the best in your quest for the playoffs and in the playoffs.

Dinesh_Rovers said...

Thanks Aditya for your your positive comment on Rovers. We enjoyed playing with you guys and you guys are a friendly bunch. I wish you best of luck for the rest of the games.

I think some umpires follow the rules rigidly and enforce the rules very strictly. I think they can use their judgement and act based on the conditions. a 75 degree day and 100 degree day are not the same and they can use the same guidelines for both teams to be fair.

bleh said...

Aditya,

Don't tell me you've given up on playoffs already bud! You have 5 games to go - if you win them all, you'll end up on 32 - enough to qualify.
A tall order but not impossible you know!

It's not about blaming anyone or showing machismo, it's about learning our lessons. The big lesson here is to not just blow over some serious symptoms. Maybe a little training on basic symptoms, etc may not be a bad idea. After all, we do play a physically demanding sport (at times) under extreme weather conditions (at times again), so we should take some preventative measures.
