Week 7

Yet another frustrating week last week (with seemingly another frustrating week in prospect) - the weather isnt really giving us a break this season.

Still, several close games, upsets and dominating performances last week - and, once again, we try and cover it all in our video-magazine, the Midwest Wrap. Including, this week, a chat with MCC-team-captain Sohail on his squad's prospects for the Central-East-Regional, an interview with Rup on the future of his Illinois outfit, and the most exciting Top Performers award across all three divisions of the season.

I have the # as bowler runs ad up to 146 + 1 leg bye = 147.
ICC score book has the following

Sourabh Bhattacharya 4 0 28 0
Aquib Choudhry 2 0 10 3
Sagar Jadhav 5 0 45 1
Prashant Nair 3 0 10 1
Keshavraj Annadurai 5 0 30 1
Nikhil Bharadwaj 5 0 23 3

I hope this was an honest entry error from Arena. They can correct it if the want to or the League can request the corrections.

I don't think ICC has anything to do with this.

ICC vs Evanston...another cracker of a game.

ICC scored 177 off 39 overs.. Evanston all out for 165 off 33 overs...Details to follow later

An absolute gem of a game between Hammond and Lucky yesterday. Lucky batted first and scored 251/9 with everyone contributing to the score except yours truly who scored a 2nd ball golden duck. The top scorer was Javid who went in at number 10 and scored a blistering 58.

Hammond chased the score on the last ball of the match by stealing a bye. Congrats to them on well played game.

Wow, looks like we had pretty exciting weekend of cricket. A thrilling last ball victory in a high scoring game, a nail-biter against an arch rival, and a good chase by a sleeper team! Congratulations to all for some good games of cricket.

Unfortunately, our game vs Muslim was rained out at Heritage Park. It was extremely frustrating given the beautiful cricketing weather this weekend, and yet the inability to move the game to a ground that was available and likely would have been playable without impacting anyone else! I'll share more details later.

naren said...

Adi: Before you share any details here is an update on the state of WP.
I was supposed to play a 30-30 game at Washington Park and believe it or not the whole park was full of water, and I would not be surprised if the ground is not playable next week with more rain predicted this week.

I heard about your team requesting for a switch to WP on Saturday from Heritage park, you would have spent more time driving to WP only to find a fish pond there...man WP is becoming a nightmare this year, I saw a new problem on ground 1, there is a huge hole next to the pitch which might have been because of soil erosion beneath the ground, this hole is big enough for someone to fall and be waist deep into the hole :-).

Either way I hear your frustration about not being able to move a game when there is a ground available, dude when we traveled to St. Louis we had the same problem with the ground being a mini pond and we could not move our game to a ground close to STL, the reason being MCC has a rule in place which does not permit such a change, the only thing we can do is to scrap this rule for next year and be allowed to play cricket if a ground is available untill then we can only sulk....

Congrats on the win ... I understand that it could be a mistake from Arena while entering the scores ... We got bowling figures from Collinsville yesterday ... and am still trying to figure out them ... :)

Here is how ICC vs Evanston went.

Evanston won the toss and send ICC to bat due to a moist ground from all the rain.

ICC played cautiously but still lost 3 wickets to some good bowling. After 20 over ICC was 56 for 3.
After the break ICC came out atacking..Lost the 4th wicket at 69 in the 23rd over. In came your truly and took it to the Legy..33 in about 15 ball..24 in one over and soon ICC was ove 100 in the 25th over...The attack never let up as ICC score 100 after the break in just 13 overs. We colapsed a little in the end but was able to post 177.

Evanston came in and was bent on Attacking but soon found themselve 3 down in the 7th over for 20+. Mike and Malik led the recovery..ICC dropped Malik 3 times within 6 deliveries and it cost us the 50 he made wit an 80+ partnership. break at 87 for 3. After the break ICC got the break through and soon 4 wickets fell quickly,Aaron picking up 3, leaving evanston needing 66 with 3 wickets.
Perry and Taylor played agressively and soon it was 39 off 10 over 3 wickets. then it was 8 over 24 & 3 wickets. 7 over 18 to win and George stuck twice in 2 ball.. both bowled.
18 to win 1 wicket but Annand got Donald to pop up at short point and game over ..ICC won by 12.

Great game..Kudos to Evanston for the great hosting and as always the good food..It was a treat..

Till next match report from ICC vs Lucky..bye for now

That is one of the reasons why i always make sure my guys balance the socre sheet and we get a legible copy for our records..

Arena should be able to explain how they were able to balance to 147 on runs allowed by their bowlers..

Naren,

No blame game on my end - but obviously just frustrated at the result. I don't like the rule about not moving venues. But I do respect that it is being applied consistently this year.

I understand there are constraints/challenges, but a consistent approach can be used in all cases to move venues if possible to allow more cricket to be played. We need to come up with a process to do this and share it with management for next year. Since we pay to play, it's better to have more games than less games.

Aditya said...

ps. The umpire, management, Muslim, and Phoenix were all prepared to work on the ground, wait for some time, and see if we could get it into playing condition. But the Park district would not even allow us to wait cancelling all games.

On another funny note, we went to Community Park to practice for a bit. ACC had that ground reserved, and it was in pretty decent shape - comparitively. The PD ranger asked them to wait for a bit, but they argued with him and insisted on playing immediately. So he just cancelled all games for the rest of the day. Had those teams just been a little patient, they would have been playing. Instead they were rude and ended up in our boat!! (all puns intended).

For the first time in 4 years I think, I couldnt umpire this game :-( Still, I made it down to the ground for the second half - saw almost the entire Evanston chase. And, as usual, a brilliant game it was - incredibly good contest in the end, game see-sawing one way and the other (as it always seems to in Evanston/Illinois contests).

It was 20/3, as Rup says, Illinois in command, and then Evanston took it to 99/3 a bit after break (chasing 178 to win) - very good batting by Malik and Mikey, and bad fielding by ICC (2 dropped catches in one over before break) - now Evanston in command. Then Malik went for one shot too many and got out - 99/4. It progressed to 105/4... and then 3 wickets fell for 5 runs (all LBW to Aaron - Mikey was particularly unhappy with his).

At 110/7 it looked all over - but thats the thing with Evanston/Illinois games, its rarely over before it is :-) Evanston, with Perry and Taylor, kept going - all the way to 154/7 with 8 overs left. So, 8 overs left, 24 runs, 3 wickets.

George at this stage had 3-0-24-0.. but Rup decided to continue with him. His first ball, Taylor launched for a six over long-on - so George now had 3.1 overs for 30 runs (and Evanston needed 18 to win off 7.5 overs with 3 wickets)! Once again it looked all over - except this time the other way, the game had swung all the way around!

Next ball, Taylor tried to hit another six.. and was clean bowled instead! Next man walked in, and was clean-bowled by George first ball! It had gone from 160/7 to 160/9 and keeping George on had proved a master-stroke!

Evanston's last pair hung on for an over or so more, adding runs (overs were no problem at this stage)... but finally a leading-edge from the last-man popped up and Illinois had won by 12 runs.

Nobody left afterwards, of course - there was much music and merriment, huge crowd, lots of drinks, and some quite awesome food (the barbecue chicken was especially spectacular). Three or four guys from Milwaukee had driven down all the way to watch the game (Taylor, Jimmy, Wade etc from Milwaukee Cricket Club), and much fun was had by all. I personally left right when the Illinois guys did - which was at about 8pm (2.5 hours after the game ended, maybe?).. and when I left the Milwaukee guys were still there, and still going strong, as were of course the Evanstonians and most of the crowd :-)

It really is the fun-nest game of the year - Iam going to try and book the umpiring for next years game right now to be sure I can get it :-) We really ought to have lots more games like this in our league - if the World Cup this year can be half as much fun as the Evanston-Illinois game is anually, it'll be a grand success!

I agree that we should always err on the side of getting a game in, whenever possible.

However, in this case, things are extremely difficult. WHat if it rains at Washington Park, and play isnt possible (as was the case on Saturday and Sunday), but is possible elsewhere? There are usually 3 games at WP.. what if Hanover is available, and playable (as was the case Sunday)? Which game gets moved? Should we move only Div1 games? Should it be first-come first-serve? Should it be scheduling-committee decision as to which game they move? :-)

Until a set-in-stone rule can be created for these types of things, its hard to allow *anything* to be moved without expecting allegations of bias to be thrown about. Which is probably why management has taken the one consistent approach possible in this case.. no games moved period.

If any one of us can come up with a better solution, that would be great.. I cant think of one off-hand myself.

C8W,

Your comment points to laziness not impossibility. There is a way through, but time has to be spent to iron out the wrinkles. For this year it may have been too late, but not for next year!!!

I can come up with an approach that takes care of 95% of the scenarios. There are a few which I haven't thought about as yet, though I'm sure others can help address that.

I'll post my suggestion soon with it's limitations. Lets see what people say. Then we can get things in motion for next year if we can come up with a water-tight scenario.

Prelim is the drainage sewers of WP is busted and the City is not going to fix until the Olympics deal if final..So we need to pray for lots of Sunshine and Mgt to come up with a plan B..plan A is in some serious trouble...

So here is the match report ..

We managed to reach the ground at around 11:15 AM .. and came to know that the match was going to start at 11:45 AM. We had won the toss and decided to field ... so everybody got ready for the match .. It was bright and sunny and very very humid ...

We managed to play with good intensity in the beginning ... for about 10-15 overs ... but as the sun refused to relent .. our energy levels started going down .. We managed to get 4 wickets for 71 runs ... but then some more dropped catches took Collinsville to 107/4 in 20 overs ... We took the break to drink as much water/gatorades to replenish our energy levels .... That reflected in our first few overs performances after the break .. We get 3 more wickets in the first five overs ... but then Hardik n Sal settled down and played sensibly ... and took them closer to 200 mark .. but then a good catch by Schon ended Sal's knock and Tafazzul finished up their innings in just two balls ... Hardik was stranded at the other end .. For us, Tafazzul picked up 4 wickets (all clean bowleds) and Husnain, Faraz, Raghu, Mughiz and Me took one wicket each...

We were all drained ... Managed to eat little and then had to start our chase ... Tafazzul n Me started the innings and because of the weather, we decided to just stay on the wickets for first 5 overs even if we do not score some runs .. Tafazzul even then with his power hitting took us to 81/0 in 10 overs ... in which my share was just 6 runs .. while Tafazzul had hit 6 sixes and 2 fours ... I got out in the next over caught behind ... and then the run-rate dipped as Collinsville got their spinners in and it was not easy to hit them for 4s and 6s ... and we were still tired to run hard and get the singles-doubles ... Tafazzul tried to break the shackles and got a leading edge and was caught at gully for well-made 63 off 48 balls. Faraz n Mughiz then played sensibly and took us to 104/2 at drinks break ...

Then Faraz got out lbw soon after the break and Naveen too perished few overs after showing hope for a while. Captain Raj too got run-out for a duck. We were 127/5 and as usual had seen a middle-order collapse. But amidst all these, Mughiz had read the pitch brilliantly and was all set. Schon - the next man in and Mughiz added 27 more runs before Schon was clean bowled. Then Husnain was sent in, as Mughiz was hitting the odd boundaries and taking singles of almost every ball. The equation had come down to 27 runs in 5 overs. Husnain was finding it difficult to connect the ball initially. On the other end, Mughiz took the responsibility and was taking runs also trying the ocassional big hit. But then suddenly Husnain started hitting over the fielders and the pair ran hard and got 2 runs. Finally Husnain hit a monstrous six and sealed the win for us off the last ball of 38th over. Hasnain scored 21* (27). But Mughiz had played a gem of innings in these conditions. He was unbeaten on 48 in 63 balls. The shot of the match was a brilliant cover drive by him that kept going and going for a great six.

Our Men of the Match for this match would be Tafazzul (63 and 4 wickets) and Mughiz (48* and 1 wicket).

Not to forget was the brilliant gujju food provided by the Collinsville team - Khichdi, Chhass (Butter-milk), Pickle, Salad. :)

Wow interesting weekend.... Congrats to teams that won, teams who were on the loosing side the season is still wide open not to worry....

From Jaguars Vs Madison, from what I know Jaguars were shot out for 157, at one stage they were somewhere at 80/7 but thanks to Asad Harshad to get them to 157. Madison won the game with 5 wickets to spare, Harsh Pareekh scored 74 rescued their team from 50/5 ....

Congrats Madison....

And yes Teams travelling to Collinsville you can expect a gourmet meal from them :) ....

I umpired this game - really a quite excellent game, high-quality as well, between 2 of the better teams in Div2 I think. (Jaguars are good, were top-of-the-table before this game.. Madison is sort of a strange team, I umpired them 2 consecutive weeks, loss in Hammond and this win over Jaguars at home.. in these 2 consecutive games they had only 3 guys in common! That is, 8 different guys played this weekend! People werent willing to travel to Chicago a week after travelling to Moline, so they had to cobble together a team for the Hammond game).

Anyway. Jaguars batted first, were 32/1 in 6 overs.. then 2 runouts in one over changed things. Madison bowled very well, had Jaguars down at 90/7, then Harshad and Asad hung in there till the last over and took them to 157 (basically added 60 in about 11 overs together, excellent batting depth).

Madison was in early trouble, 2 wickets in the first 5 overs (one of them runout). They were 50/4, then Harsh came in and hit 2 huge straight sixes.. and then the opener Mansoor got out, so it was 64/5 ,and the Jaguars were rampant - bowling and fielding very well, lots of chatter on the field. At this point under very big pressure the captain Aslam came in, and with his cool-headed batting and one end and Harsh's brilliant power-hitting at the other end (with Aslam talkign to him every few balls to pick the right balls to go after), Madison took it all the way home - 95 run unbeaten partnership for the 6th wicket to win it. Madison has a very long boundary - 70-75 yards in certain places - and Harsh cleared it 5 times, quite excellent clean hitting.

These could be 2 very good teams at full-strength - and at full-strenght could meet again in the Div2 playoffs. Jaguars are strong usually, the core of the team is always playing (but Vishal missed this one, one of their best players).. Madison will need to get their team together a bit still. Their best fast bowler Sandeep played for the first time this year in this game (and is irregular), another good pacer Akhil played his first game ever (but he will also be irregular apparently), and one of the best spinners in Div2, Ankur, isnt back from India yet (plus Murari, Kethak etc didnt play). If everyone gets together for Madison and Jaguars - these are 2 youngish teams, good fielding, solid all the way down, both could be solid playoff teams this year I think.

Div2 is looking more exciting now, after an iffy start IMHO - Jaguars and Madison coming on a bit, Illinois looking very good this weekend, Titans strong all year to date, teams like CCI (which we dont know much about) winning quite a few away from Chicago.. turning into a very fun and open division again.

Hey Mo - do you know for sure if Hammond was levelled this year? It didnt *look* that different, but its playing well - its a very hard ground underneath this year, and very low grass (ball is travelling ridiculously fast).. and games are being possible there this year almost as well as they used to be at Washington Park (it rained like crazy Friday evening, but games were possible Saturday and Sunday - as they always used to be at WP too in the past).

Is levelling the problem at WP? It seems pretty level, same as always... but rumour was that there was a drainage-pipe-burst under Ground Three sometime, which made drainage there horrible. I presume this is what is now affecting drainage in the other grounds too.

I went to WP on Sunday for a 30/30, and it was ridiculous. Rain had stopped Friday evening - last year that would have meant game possible by midnight Friday :-) This year no game on Saturday, and it was unbelievable on Sunday.. we could barely reach the playing-area, with muck up sides of shoes etc, standing water in most spots. Several stretches of shallow pools almost, lots of ducks, and even ground one smelled to high heaven, probably because of duck-guano. It looked quite awful - hopefully consecutive 90 degree days will help dry *something*!

Youre the expert here - how does levelling work exactly? Grass still ok with levelling done right before season? How much does it cost per ground, approximately, do you think? They may have to look into it - schedule is going completely bananas right now, and is going to get worse (4 games postponed this weekend due to CER - which itself got postponed! 4 more games will now have to be postponed July 18 weekend. Plus August 1st weekend is Western Regionals - players picked for that will have to have their games postponed presumably. Plus World Cup is regular-weekend this year, probably August 14th or so according to rumour - another week's games postponed. Plus after 3 rainouts everyone gets a reschedule... Rogers Park is already at 3 rainouts! Unless we decide to play long weekends and start scheduling immediately, the regular season will run into October! (And then the playoff finals will be played right about the time the Cubs are winning the World Series, and I'll have to skip our league's playoffs to watch TV, which I dont want to do!)

What's up with the pick, weight and win for this weekend? Once you are done emailing Adnan :), are you going to put up this weekend's list of choices?

I was just looking at Div 2 points table and noticed that the race for #1 might get pretty interesting this season as right now there are quite a few contenders sitting tied for #1 with points. CCI is doing pretty good this year and it doesnt look like they have a different team. And Hammond with its ex-Falcon players seem to be playing better than previous years and the Giants also seem to be coming back from to their old form.

So here it is..

Titans won the toss and decided to field first ..

Faraz and Tafazzul were terrific in their opening spells ... and QC Kings first 3 batsmen had no clue on how to play them ... Plus Titans were fielding great .. QC Kings were were 26/3 in 7 overs .. Hari came in and he decide being offensive was the best way of defence .. and he raced to 44 runs of just balls, which proved very decisive in the end result .. Husnain, the young leggie was terrific in his spell .. he got rid of Hari, which brought some relief to Titans camp ... Hari hit 6 4s and 2 6s in his knock .. Sunil C and Veeru hung around and QC Kings were 116/6 in 20 overs.

After drinks break, Sunil and Veeru played some big shots. But Titans bowled well to get rid of them. Sunil scored 30(42) and Veeru 36(24). Titans kept the QC Kings runrate under control then and finally QC Kings were allout for 174 in 36.4 overs.

Titans started the chase in great fashion. Tafazzul continued his good form and I gave him good support. Hari got hit for a few, but bowled some good balls to Tafazzul. They had a nice little rivalry going between them. Finally I played a false shot, and QC Kings got their first break-through. We were 69/1 in 9 overs. The 1st wicket opened the gates for QC Kings and they came back into the game very well. We had a collapse and were sitting at 88/5 in 16 overs. Then Raj and Husnain had a nice little partnership going. At drinks break, we were 105/5 in 20 overs.

After drinks break, Raj and Husnain continued playing sensibly. After about 25 overs, we saw the clouds covering up the sky and it became very dark. We lost few quick wickets, but still had 2 good batsman at the crease, when the storm hit the ground with very heavy rain. We were 139/8 in 29.5 overs and required further 36 runs in 61 balls. QC Kings had upper hand, but anything could had being possible. Anyways, rain had the final say and QC Kings won the match by 11 runs on the basis of first 20 overs.

Sunil C and Hari Kiran would be my Men Of the Match for the match.

Congrats QC Kings and also apologies for any mis-behavior on the field.

Fahad patel a 18 year scored a phenomenal 81 and Hamza Patel scored a quick 49 who is also under 20. These two young stars are developing into great cricketers and are to watch out for in the future.

First Win – Pehla Nasha.
In all honesty Wildcats went easy on us. They were missing their three star players. Rom, Satish and Ajit.
On a miserable day ( weather wise) Naren won the toss and went in to bat. We bowled reasonably well to restrict them to 112. As Adi mentions baar baar. Low scores are dangerous. And that’s what happened when we started to bat. Lost wickets pretty quickly. 11 for 3. I went in and tried to stop the madness. I really didn’t want any heroics. We just needed those 4 points. Kaisa bhi karke. But soon we were 29 for 5. Then GG came in blasted away for an unbeaten 58. In the end we won it with 4 wickets in hand.
It was a good game. Wildcats bowled really well and their fielding was exceptional. Good field placements, Naren.
Lakshmi is bearing the brunt of bad decisions. I am telling you he has been having the most awful luck this year. I think Sadiq jinxed him. Kuch shanti karna padega.

We did not go easy i guess, the players were not available for personal reasons and hence a thin looking cats, that does not mean the 11 we put up was any aayaram gayaram's.

We played like morons to be honest and you guys just stuck in there and came out with a W.

I dont think Lakshmi was so unfortunate atleast in our game, he missed a straighter ball on to his stumps, I can agree with you being upset when you urself got a not out for a plumb lbw... that is part n parcel of the game :-).. Just kidding ..

Eitherway we have to go back to our drawing board and figure out a combination when we are without Ajit/Satish/Vikram who can get a Win.

Naren,
we are all entitled to our opinions.
And by the way i didnt mean the team that we played against were aayarams and defenitely not gayarams.
yes it is defenitely part and parcel of the game. Lbw's not given, stumpings turned down etc. And i am not complaining. Because this is not something new.
Good luck for the rest of the season.

Preetam : You did not say that the team you played was bad, I said that and I meant that even though my team had enough good players we ended up playing like those ram's, nothing against you and your team, you guys are a good bunch.

I agree on the part of bad decisions as we dont have quality umpires in our league, and this also happens at international level, so we cannot do much about it.

I might not see you guys on Thursday, and i will update you if anything changes.

Oy, we have great umpiring in our league ;-) (Seriously, though, its not *that* bad - when our league guys went to the CER last year, and got umpired by 3 Ranji-Trophy umpires, one of whom was actually an international umpire, they were higly unimpressed, claiming the umpiring in our league was better...which is quite a compliment to our league-umpiring, of course :-)

BTW, does anyone know what happened to the PakGym/StLouis game? The summary claims PakGym 198/9 in 40, StLouis 108/3 in 21.5 overs, and "PakGym forfeit the game"?? Was it rain-rule coming into effect? That wouldnt be referred to as a forfeit, surely? Anyone got any details?

PakGym has updated their Weekly Summary on the MCC site. For this week it reads:

-----------
Pak Gymkhana
Elected To Bat First
Match Result Lost
Total Score 198/9 in 35 overs
Opposition Total Score 108/3 in 21.5 overs
Top Scorers Saikishore Aengareddy
Top Bowlers Saikishore Aengareddy
Man Of The Match Saikishore Aengareddy
-------

This was actually a 35-over game, in which StLouis was 108/3 in 21.5 overs with their 2 best bats at the crease - they needed 91 to win in 13.1 overs when the game ended. St Louis claims the game ended by forfeit.

Saikishore Aengareddy was the umpire for the game.

Anyone know more about this game, and what exactly happened? If Raheel (or anyone else who was there) is still on the blog, could they provide details at all?

guys just got a call from Hnaover Park district. they retreived my kit bag from the park sunday evening. It's a big relief to me as mine as well as saad's compelte kits and new bats were inside it .

Kudos to hanover park district again!

We had a disagreement within our team re: arguing with the umpire over a succession of lbw appeals that were turned down. This resulted in a few players walking off the field, hence the forfeit.

Thanks Raheel. Was that the only thing, then - lbw appeals turned down? No other incidents or anything?

It seems kind of strange - 90 needed in 13 overs, Id have thought you guys were probably favourites at that point in time. Given that a drive to-and-from StLouis had been undertaken (10 hours on the road), seems a little extreme to forfeit over lbw appeals when youre likely to win!

Thanks for letting us know, though - I was originally even wondering if it was rain-rule or soemthing, good to know what actually happened :-)

was the disagreement within your team or between your team and the umpire??

Why does st. louis have entered their score as 199, i don't think they scored 199, they won the game because PAK forfeited the game, this gives KUTIS unfair advantage with the run rate by entering the winning score.

Tonald Drump said...

Boy oh boy. What the hell is going on. Pak forfeiting to STL Kutis, Giants losing after scoring 300+ to Fire, Eagles winning for the first time, Alpesh and something with LBW lol. My o my it's all happening out there.

There was an older man that was married to a much younger woman, and he was having trouble lasting long enough in bed. So he went to the doctor and was told he should please himself before having sex and he would last longer. One day as 5 o'clock rolls around, he gets a call from his wife who says she's very horny. On his way home, he remembers what the doctor said and decides to jerk it before he gets home. He thinks, "Well, I can't do it in the car, but if I get under it I can pretend I'm fixing my car." So he gets under the car, closes his eyes, and starts jerkin it. A few minutes later, there's a tug at his pants leg. In order to keep the image of his beautiful wife, he doesn't open his eyes, but just hollars, "Yeah?" "I'm Officer Brown. What are you doing down there?" "Well, officer, I'm checking my axle; I think it's come lose." "Well, mister, while you're down there, you might wanna check your brakes; your car's 2 blocks down the road crashed into a tree."

Missed it by a day, Romeen :-) Read this a day after recording the show for this week (which has just gone up for this week, BTW). Mentioned it on the show a few weeks ago, but would have liked to have done so again this week - oh well.

Will mention it in next week's show - is there one single contact email or number that we can mention, for people to contact to register a team? (I presume, with all the girls already stalking you, that you dont want your own phone number mentioned in a public forum, right? ;-)
