New Intitiatives ??

Last year one of the most successful intiatives launched was the Midwest Cricketer Blog. It was a wonderful idea, giving members of the league a place to voice their opinions and to share insights. Hopefully, some of the ideas will lead to new initiatives this year as the league tries to build upon itself and improve it self.

One of the problems last year was that some of the good ideas came out too late. Too late to have the All-Star game. Too late to really have a fantasy league. Too late to have an MCC banquet. Ok, so scratch the last one from the list, but you get the point. Lets start that discussion early this year, and lets see if we can get some of those ideas in motion. Here is what I have so far:

1. All-Star game
2. Fantasy League
3. Improving the mats (astroturf anyone?) at Washington Park, and elsewhere
4. Holding an MCC Banquet this year
5. Weekly awards / recognition for outstanding performances
6. Greater dialogue with the Administration on league matters
7. Greater participation in externally held events
8. Mandatory Umpire's seminar / training to improve umpiring
9. Improving practice facilities, etc.
10. Cutting the grass on the grounds

What else do you guys think we should do to improve our league and the standard of cricket? Are we doing enough to expand the league? I think it would be great to get a bunch of ideas and pass them onto the management and then have them provide feedback on what they plan to do about them. So please, do suggest any ideas you have, build upon these ideas, but provide constructive suggestions that can be used and implemented.

Aditya,
Welcome! On the right hand column under Midwest Cricketer Projects we have the Idea page where since last year we have been receiving a ton of suggestions from so many people. I hope that the Mgmt is reading through them and implementing what is feasible. Maybe we should do an interview with someone from the Mgmt to see what the status is. Just a thought.

The idea page is turning out to be a Joke.
I know it all volunteer work but if you hold a position that you cannot fulfill you should step down and lets get some one else in.
We are a league dragging our feet when it comes to make changes to modernize the game of cricket for more fun and excitement.
Why are we still not in clored clothes and white ball..beats me??. Also no power play as yet?. How much brain does it take to get this in when it does not cost the league a penny?.
I guess the foot will hit the pedal as we near election but that will make it seem more like politics rather that obligations.
My view

The league needs lots of volunteers to take up these initiatives. It will help in compressing the lead time.

Rup, you are right in that there is no point in just coming up with ideas and not doing something about it.

Here is what I am proposing we do. And we don't need to sit around and wait for managment to do it because for whatever reason (and I'm not blaming them), there is a huge lead time.

So, let us as bloggers and members of the MCC come up with our list of top ten ideas. Then we will figure out what it takes to implement them and what effort is needed. Once the work and research is done on our end, then we will submit it in writing to the management and inform them that we are planning to introduce it at the next AGM.

The way I see it, there is too much for the management to do. Such initiatives require effort and I don't see why we as members can't take on the responsibility. If the idea needs money, then let us figure out how much it'll cost, and then work with the treasurer to figure out what is possible and what isn't. This also requires proper entries and accounts being kept in the books, but I don't want to open that can of worms again. I'm sure that everything will be kept and maitained moving forward.

I like the idea of coloured clothes and a white ball. That's great. I also like the ideas of introducing the power plays. Things like this will help attract teams and players back to our league.

So, I'm hoping to get people's input for ideas. Then we'll finalize our top 5 / 10 items and get to work figuring out what it'll take to implement them.

Every time i look up we see Need volunteer..
Management need to publish what category of voulteer the are in need of so that any individual who want to fill that role will apply. They need to list the people who are currently in those postions and contact info so that they can be contacted for volunteer work. If we have ghost positions this will eliminate that.
How would you like to throw your name in for volunteer and next this you are the President (not likely) which you do not want to even think of..??.
Eg: Last year Margoob called me for help with umpires and I volunteered and did 5 games.
This league is too big to get up and run in one month. We need a longer head start so that time is there for new ideas to be heard and implemented if approved by the league. This last minute thing has got to go!!!!
If players feel they are being short changed then we need a players association to make sure management does not drag their feet on important matters.

Aditya ,

My priorities are:

1. Getting more grounds in Chicago land area : We had a ground at Naperville last year, but from this year, Naperville Park District has started a cricket league and we seemed to have lost the ground. Acquiring a ground takes a lot of effort and may need collective skills (communication, diplomacy, tenacity to name a few) of several people.
2. Improving communication: Better leverage our website as a communication vehicle to pass information to teams & members. Other than score updates, I don't find the website informative to address day to day issues. Infact, we can go over day to day issues that the management addressed last year and see if we can come up with a FAQ (and answers) to address common problems. Agreed, not all issues can be solved with a FAQ list.
3. Ensure that the grass is cut on a weekly basis (preferrably friday).
4. Put a new mat in pitch 2 nets at Hanover Park.
5. All Star Game.

Assuming we pool our efforts today, we may get a ground or two next year...but others can be tackled this year.
