Penultimate weekend of Regular season - results and related discussions

This thread is for games related discussions only.

Most of the teams have now completed their 14 games of the season.

In Div 1, United's fate is hanging on the result of the game between AAA and CCI. Eagles have already been relegated to Div 2. The play-off teams have been finalized with just the positioning may change based on the results in the last week.

Div 2 too has the same situation with respect to the play-offs.

In 30-30, most of the play-off spots have been decided but the last week games will decide the final 2 play-off teams.

And last but not the least, Congrats to the Challengers for winning the ABNT for the 6th time. And thanks to Pak Gym and Challengers both for providing a wonderful game of Cricket. The Final was a match to remember.

I was checking some statistics about our blog and I found that we are getting some 12 visits from Russia .. Wonder who is there ???

Shekhs said...

Maybe, they are trying to start a league in Russia. Trying to model it on the best (I'm sure this will be questioned hahaha) league in america.....

Alpesh,

Interesting choice of Poll on the main page. I hope we get a good response to it. The Div 2 issue is the biggest issue facing our league, and the decisions that this management take could have a huge impact for the future.

Aditya said...

Congrats to the Challengers for winning and to Pak Gym for being the Runners-up. It seems that only Pak Gym and Challengers can beat each other - depending on whether it is in the Finals or in the playoffs in the ALNT - talk about domination!

What were all those trophies for?

Aditya said...

I noticed that the presentation ceremony happened right after the game - which is a change, but a good one.

Can we expect the same for the other Division finals?

Shekhs said...

Adi,
We'll see what we can do for the finals.

Everybody have a wonderful labor day weekend!!

Billoger said...

Alpesh,
Can you also start a Poll which says if peole would like the playoffs to be moved one more week so our stars can represent Midwest in Western Conf in LA?

I hear that all the players are not going to play in LA because they dont want to miss playoffs here?

Let's see what the bloggers vote for.

AAA beat CCI so United you are safe and can sleep peacefully at night now

Challangers beat Phoneix

Illinois vs Rogers Park still on going and might last till 7 or 730 PM.

Alpesh said...

Rogers Park beat Illinois ..

So Div 2 QF match up looks like -
Arena vs Illinois
Mil Panthers vs Titans
QC Kings vs Hammond
Rogers Park vs Jaguars

Waiting eagerly for the next weekend ...

Alpesh said...

Titans are #7 and Illinois are #8, as Titans have more quality wins (against play-off teams) 3 as to Illinois's 2 wins ... We tie on the first 3 criteria ...

What happened to Hammond vs Rangers match? I mean who gave walkover to whom.

Per few weeks update Hammond gave walkover per Rangers. Later noticed that game was rescheduled to last weekend due to a death in the family.

Did Rangers gave the walkover to Hammond now?

Yep .. Rangers gave walkover to Hammond, as they were short of players ..

Let's do some predictions guys!

All top 4 seeds in div 1 make it to semis.. :)

In div 2, RP and Titans pull off the upset :)

And in a spot fixing bonanza, Alpesh plays the first over he faces as a maiden.. he does that anyway and decided why not make some money while you are at it :)

Shekhs said...

hahaha..nice Dinesh...

goodluck to all teams!!

This schedule seems to be favoring DeePark/challengers their division 1 players play 30/30 on Saturday and div 1 game on Sunday... Let me guess is it because president is part of both teams.. why not same treatment for rest of the teams.............

Looking forward to answers from mgmt..

If you cant answer resign or ban guest players from your 30/30 team.

Alpesh said...

MCC ..

Which other 30-30 team is having a clash as per the current schedule?? Did they send in a scheduling request to the Scheduling committee??

Alpesh said...

Was anybody following Pollard's inning today .. 72 of 30 balls ... towards the end .. sixes of almost every ball ...

Will somebody pull up a similar effort this weekend ..?? If somebody can do it .. it would be Sikander from Bears ...

Dinesh,

Just wanted to find out if that was the plan. I like the banquet presentation concept too.

Aditya said...

Looks like the "bloggers" voted overwhelmingly to not postpone the playoffs due to the western conference championships.

I really think that USACA needs to figure this out better. September is playoffs in most leagues across the country - why schedule this "championship" then? These should really be played in the middle of summer!

Speaking of playoffs, good luck to all the teams. The best 8 teams in Div 1 are the ones that qualified - that's for sure.

Aditya said...

Ok, here are my predictions:

Div 1
Challengers have too much depth for the impressive Bears team.
Muslim Gym upsets the Flames due to a batting blitz by all 3 brothers
Wildcats use their experience to out-hustle Peoria
Pak Gym win big over Purdue

Div 2
Arena bt ICC if they can get a proper XI to travel.
Titans upset Milwaukee despite Alpesh's spot fixing!!
RPCC find form and pull out a close win against the Jaguars
Hammond struggle against QC Kings, but pull out another hard fought win.

Div 3
Deepark rolls over Hawks despite some awesome glovework by Arpan!
Rockers upset Nighthowlers due to some awesome batting from my 20 year old friend.
Juggernauts keep a tight leash on the Panther's batting lineup for a win.
Desi Tigers maintain their #1 seed with a good win over CCC despite Pardeep's bowling heroics.

Remember, I'm not a pundit and my predictions count for nothing - so good luck to all. :)

They really do, yes. Its never been this late before anyway.. last year it was in August. But they wanted to avoid clashing with Ramadan in August too I suppose (and with Eid Labor Day weekend)..ideally Labor day weekend is the best IMHO, its already 3-days (players dont have to take a day off work), its not a clash with most league-games etc.

South-West, after being beaten by our guys last year, is coming back with our old pal Tarun this year. And they have 2 new Ranji Players from Gujarat! Amit Sood played a few Ranjis (and is 30).. one ton against Bengal (but then, as Adi knows, making runs vs Bengal bowlers is easy ;-) The other is Timil Patel, who has a v strong pedigree... he was an India U19 player (played in the same U19 team as Raina, Irfan, Rayudu etc).. there was a time he was considered a future India prospect as a leggie-allrounder.. he's 27, not that old, I wonder if he's moved to LA or just playing as a "pro"?

Should be a fun tournament - hope our Four Musketeers do well!

In the last few days i have been checking the match schedules and the umpires have been changed 2-3 times now and there only being changed for the the Muslim and Flame game. Now Aditya is the umpire of the game and he predicted that Muslim is gonna upset Flame. I sense this being bias towards Flames to try to make the Flames lose there playoff game.

Brilliant win by CER, actually. Pitch with slow spongy bounce apparently, bit of a struggle for the pacers and the batsmen - Fahad unfortunately fell first over, but Ashhar got 25 or so, and Asif 18 IIRC.. Abhijit Joshi got 28 and captain Shahid Malik of GLCC (MOM of the CER final for 64* vs our guys) got 72*, to take CER to 172.

In reply Raheel bowled v well early, beating former-US-player Rahul Kukreti often (got special mention from US coach Clayton Lambert post-game). But CWest was going well at 111/3 at one stage (ie needing 61 in 28 overs IIRC). But then Asif Mahmood worked the magic he's done so often in our league - amazing spell by him, 10 overs, 3 for 12! Reduced CWest to 120/6, match-turning (and eventually match-winning) spell of spin bowling.

CWest continued fighting after Asif's spell ended, and dragged it to 169/9, only 3 runs away. But then the ball was thrown to Raheel.. and he promptly bounced and drew a popup to short square leg, to end it all. Clutch bowling, and terrific win for CER!

Good luck to them tomorrow - when they take on North-West (and familiar face Samarth Shah, formerly of United and CCI, who played 5 years in our league).. NW this year has Ryan Crostwaithe playing for them, brother of current first-class cricketer in Australia (Ryan apparently top-scored today for NW in their loss to SouthWest). They also have leggie Saurabh Verma, who played for the US 2 months ago.

Good luck to our guys!

----

Yes, very bad loss today, in a very important game - a win would have assured advancement to the Nationals.

To start with, politics raised its ugly head before play began..Raheel, the best paceman of the day yesterday, was left out of the playing XI! He had bowled beautifully yesterday..with only 3 runs to defend and lots of overs, he was the one the team had had the confidence in to throw the ball to.. and he had delivered with the clutch winning wicket. He had drawn special praise and advice from USA Coach Clayton Lambert at the end of hte day. Yet, he was left out of the XI today!

NW, with a batting lineup reputedly a little fragile, promptly took advantage, taking the pace bowlers to the cleaners. When I got an update, Nauman and Crostwaithe were takign the bowling to the cleaners - Asif had bowled 7 overs for less than 20 runs (repeated yelled advice from outside to the batsmen to "just play this guy out" every time he bowled, apparently) but the score was already 198/2 in 34 overs by then! Nauman got a ton, Crostwaithe 87.. and with wickets in hand and the PowerPlay overs at the end, everyone got hit (including Asif in his last 3 overs, apparently), as NW powered to 330.

A huge score, and CE never really had a good chance, eventually ending 164 allout IIRC.. our guys fought hard in a losing cause, Fahad 30, Ashhar top-scoring with 45, and Asif (sent in to bat at #8!) 30.. a little over 100 (out of 164) from 3 guys, but too high of a target, and little support.

Very tough loss though - NW had lost yesterday, and a win today (it bears repeating) would have put CER into the Nationals..(Iam still stunned they wouldnt play Raheel in a game as important as that!) As it is, its now 1-1, and taking on South-West (who are 2-0) tomorrow (while NW now plays 0-2 Central-West)... in addition, of course, the Net-Run-Rate, which might come into play, has taken a beating.

Sadiq Sir should do the honors as he was the umpire for that match ... But WildCats were chasing 250 and at around 22 over, they required 7.5 RPO with 8 wickets in hand .. The light also affected their chase, but WildCats being the perfect gentlemen team continued playing as they did not want Peoria to travel again to play the few overs ..

Congrats to Peoria and Hats Off to the WildCats team, who are the best ambassadors of Cricket in MWCC !!!

Aditya your prediction on the Chicago Cricket Club was completely wrong and you should not participate in being a part time pandit. Nobody in this league has any idea of Chicago Cricket Clubs strengths and depth and it seems like Aditya you are one of them. So here is the question? who is the No#1 team now after beating Desi Tigers...........?

Aditya said...

Div 1 - 3/4. Purdue outhustled the Wildcats!

Div 2 - 0/1. Congrats to QC Kings.

Div 3 - 0/1 (kind of). CCC did win, but I was right about Pradeep's heroics.

Congrats to the teams moving on and good luck to all those playing this weekend.

Aditya said...

JAGGI (very funny),

Don't take it so personally. Fortunately, the only thing that counts is what happens on the field. The rest of it is all just fun from the sidelines. Don't cry about my prediction - be happy in your win. I'm happy for you guys.

What I do know is that the top ranked seed left in the Div 3 playoffs are the Nighthowlers. If they fall, then it's DeePark. You're still ranked the #8 seed as per the regular season. 1 round of the playoffs means very little in the end - except that you guys played well and won a tough game.

But, if you can win the next two games, then you will be the Champions of the Division. And then CCC will be the #1 team in Div 30/30.

Good luck and try and relax. This is a recreational league where we play for fun and blog for fun.

13th Man: Asif Mehmood Khan, Central East – When batsmen from the other three teams in the Western Conference were surveyed for the most impressive and difficult bowler they faced, without hesitation the answer every time was Mehmood. In a 3-run win over Central West, he bowled 10 overs, including 4 maidens, on his way to taking 3 for 12 as Central West defended 172. In that game, he claimed the key wicket of Corns and then the high run scorer Rahul Kukreti to spark Central West’s collapse. In all, he took five wickets in three games at an economy of 2.90 runs per over.

Top 5 Players in Contention for Selection to USA Senior Team

1. Ryan Corns – The future is now. Corns didn’t bang down the selection door this weekend, he took a flamethrower to it when he torched North West’s bowling attack on Sunday.
2. Asif Mehmood Khan – For the second year in a row, he has had a very solid showing in the Western Conference and has emerged as a top candidate to fill a left arm spinner’s role that the team is desperately seeking.
3. Nauman Mustafa – USA could use an experienced keeper-batsman as insurance in case Carl Wright’s dip in form continues.
4. Neil McGarrell – The former Guyana captain with Test match experience playing for the West Indies has age counting against him, but could be considered as a left arm spinner if Mehmood is not up to scratch.
5. Glen Hall – He toured with USA in February, but only made it onto the field as a substitute fielder. However, his solid form could see him getting another opportunity.

As we in MCC have long known would be the case, one might add :-) Its turf wickets in LA, where a real spinner can come into his element - as Asif did.

The above comment is a testimony - especially on a team that was frankly relatively weak (with only 3 MCC players playing 2 of the games). In Game One (the only game CE won), Asif basically turned it around himself, with his 10-4-12-3.

In the other 2 games, lack of support counted hugely. In Game 2 Asif came on after 6 overs were bowled (and 50-odd were on the board already!).. he bowled his first 7 overs for 13 runs (after 34 overs, NW was 194/2.. of which Asif had conceded 0/13 in 7 overs! 180 had been scored off the other 27 overs! Among this was James Crostwaithe being dropped on Asif's 2nd ball - Crostwaithe, the 23-year-old who played fc cricket in Australia, made fifties in all 3 games of the tournament, eventually got 87 in this game). Asif bowled his last 3 overs in the PowerPlays at the end.. and ended with final figures of 10-0-33-1 (out of NW's final score of 330 in 50 overs)! He then made 35 with the bat (2nd highest score, after Ashhar's 43).

In Game 3, CE got 150 allout, and SW chased it for 3 down in 27 overs. Asif came on to bowl after 5 overs (44/0 in 5 overs)..and bowled 10 overs on the trot, 10-0-34-1 (as 150/3 were scored in 27 overs).

As Peter Della Penna pointed out in his "list", this is by far one of the best performances of either tournament (Western Conf and Eastern Conf) that took place last weekend. Way to go, Asif!

While Nauman did well with the bat in this tournament, Ashhar is konwn as the better gloveman.. and Ashhar had 90 runs (to Nauman's 120-odd) in this tournament). And while Nauman's century against "defending champion Central-East" is of course creditable.. the fact remains that our CE side this year wasnt as good as last years (especially in this game, with Raheel being left out!) Hopefully they will give Ashhar the consideration he deserves!

And while Neil McGarrell is a terrific spinner (played test matches with West Indies after all!)... he isnt a US citizen or anything, has not been here *that* long (he was playing first-class cricket for Guyana until 2008).. one would suspect he shouldnt be qualified for playing for the USA (just like Jermaine Lawson, who played Eastern Conference too, isnt qualified; or Adam Sanford, or Timil Patel who played Western Conference etc).

Div 1 - 3/4. Purdue outhustled the Wildcats

I meant Peoria.
--------

Yes indeed,Peoria. Terrific game it was, too!

Wildcats bowled well early, kept it tight (given the Hammond ground).. but Peoria played with the plan of holding wickets for a late push, building their innings. 84/2 in 20 (solid 51 for Tarun). Aggressive 38 from Ravi changed the momentum.. but 140/3 in 30 (after Ravi fell) turned into 170/6 in 37 overs as the Wildcats bowled very well to take control. But then Yousaf-bhai and Madhu had a match-turning partnership, staying there and then accelerating (togehter till the final over). 170/6 in 37 was turned into 251/6 in 44.3 overs,. a huge 81 run stand.. before 2 runouts in the final 3 balls saw 252 in 45 overs. Yousaf-bhai was terrific with 69* as 82 were added in the last 8 overs. 2/36 for Sanjay, 3/38 for Surya, both in 9 overs, good efforts with the ball.

Wildcats responded in kind - building an innings, keeping wickets in hand. A 60-run opening partnership between Romeen and Javed in 14 overs. It was 91/2 in 23 overs at break, when Ajit came in - 162 to win in 22 overs.

Ajit then proceeded to play IMHO the best innings Ive seen in a year and a bit at least. Hammond is an outstanding outfield for batting.. and you watch that sort of innings and realize what good batting really is :-) Everything was played solidly, broad bat, safe.. good balls defended, bad balls stroked (driven, flicked, pulled) mostly along the ground into gaps. And the runs flowed.. Nikhil and Mushtaq fell, but with Ajit and Vikram it was 184/4 in 35 overs (93 runs in 12 overs). Then there was a slight misunderstanding, a good throw, and Vikram was runout (185/5).

Still, Satish joined Ajit and the runs continued to flow. It went to 214/5 in the 39th over.. before a misunderstanding between Ajit and Satish saw the runout of Ajit, changing the entire game. Ajit had played a fantastic innings - 71 off 55 balls, hardly put a foot wrong all day until near the end (when a hard-hit ball was dropped at short cover). 123 runs had been scored in 16 overs while he was in the middle - almost 8/over, with hardly any risks taken. At 214/6 in 39 overs, it was 39 to win off 6 overs.. until the runout the Wildcats had been in control.

It all changed quickly after that. Kalyan was brought on, and bowled terrifically at the death... and a couple of mistakes by the Wildcats cost them wickets, and increased pressure. The light was no longer the perfect either, which didnt help.. but to their everlasting credit, none of hte Wildcats even hinted at asking for it. An amazing caught-and-bowled off Satish by Kalyan almost ended it.. and eventually the Wildcats finished 12 runs short.

A fantastic game, some high-quality cricket from both sides all day, hard-fought all the way, and played in wonderful spirit by both teams to the end. Everything a playoff game should ever be IMHO (but so often isnt).

Thanks for recommending the article preetam..I shud have known its abt keepers as you are one too :)

Tough luck man, that you guys are relegated. So, you guys gonna play in Div 2 or play thirty thirt next year??"

It has not been a very good year for us. apart from 1 game we never had a eleven. That is a big morale crusher. Add to it the lack of application.
We dont know what we will be doing next year. Our start of the year team meeting should decide that. I am hoping we will be able to play in DIV 2 play well and come back. But we have to see.
But it is a good time to rebuild.

Juggernauts won over Panthers on 30/30 quarterfinal today and its a great victory for the team and our boys! Being the debut season in mcc we a thoroughly enjoying the season !

Our game with panthers was good - but we had minor glitches from supporters standing outside the feild who were going a little out of the line in commenting and passing cat calls on our families who were just sitting and watching the game - This is quite not acceptable , but thanks to Clarlie and Nilesh who took no time in reprimanding those drunken folks right away ! Regardless guys - we play for fun and these kind of non sportive behaviour and running down on the winning team do not add to the integrity of cricketing !

This should go into the books of mcc management - its pivotal to ensure that our families who watch cricket are not bothered !!

Wins for Arena and Rogers Park, who will now meet in the semis.

Illinois got 207 in the morning. It was a strange innings - starting from 11/1, it was 30/3 (Hansraj getting a short-ball-fended to slip, and an LBW).. before Jack and Ron took the attack to Arena and did very well. Ron fell right at break, after an 85-run stand - it was 115/4 in 19.2 overs. Collins and Jack continued attacking post-break, and set Illinois up beautifully.. it was 186/4 after 30 overs, and 193 in the 31st over when Jack fell after a terrific innings of 67 (caught at the boundary by Hansraj - the batsman wasnt happy because the fielder didnt stand there, but the umpire was certain he was inside the boundary and that was that). Hansraj then came back on to bowl.. it had been brutally cold in the morning, very windy, a struggle to bowl for everyone... but the sun broke thru right about this time. And Hansraj bowled an amazing 2 overs - got Collins clean-bowled and George caught at gully in the first over (to have Illinois 7-down).. and in his last over (the 35th) he had Rup clean-bowled and Dan lbw to finish the innings with 5 overs to spare! He ended 7/37, as Illinois got 207 allout (with 5 overs left).

On a flat astro wicket and a fast outfield, Arena stayed in control thruout in their chase. They were 39/1 in 8 overs (when JP fell, to a nice slower ball and c&b by Jack).. but Keshav and Hardik took the game away from that point. Fielding was difficult in the cold - very hard to catch the ball - it was overcast and *very* windy all day long, the temperature felt much below the 50s it probably was. It was 132/1 in 20 overs, Keshav batted brilliantly for his 103 (and fell with about 15 runs needed).. Arena finally got 208/2 in 28 overs.

Meanwhile RP got 235 in their 40 overs against Jaguars - Sarwar got 81 I think (I saw him hitting some big shots while umping my game)... Jaguars were 120/8 in 28 overs when I visited during break (Shameer was going strong at 50+ notout).. they were allout a little bit later...

Damn Mitul you are quick! Good luck next year.
The game went exactly how we had hoped. We had planned not to lose wickets in the first 2 overs and thats what happened.
Paresh and Miral scored 27 runs off 29 balls to take the game away from NH. Anil came in with a 1st ball four and sealed the game.
Needing 30 runs off 6 overs, we started cautiously trying not to lose wickets in the first couple of overs. Both Miral and Paresh started with some solid hits. Priyank opened the bowling and gave away only 2 runs. Venkat bowled the next over giving away 6 runs, leaving Rockers 22 to win off 24 balls. Priyank bowled a 5 run over leaving us with 17 off 18 balls. This is where both batsmen decided to go after the bowling. Mitul’s over went for 8 runs leaving us 9 runs off 2 overs. Naren was bought in and Paresh got 6 runs off the first 4 balls. He started cramping up and was stumped the next delivery going for the winning runs. 3 runs were needed off 7 balls. Anil stepped in and hit Naren for a four on square leg and finished the game for us with 1 over remaining. Truly a team effort that has gotten us to the semis.

I believe Srijay's knock was a decisive one .. A quick 25 from him at the top gave your other batsman chance to relax and play the patience game ...

Unknown said...

Alpesh,

Srijays knock was decisive to some extent but you cannot discount the effort that everyone put in. We bowled the NightHowlers for 141, which happens to be their lowest score in the season. Fielding was sharp on our end with consitant direct hits. Srijay scored a very quick 25 which helped us but there were more runs to be scored to win. Whatever rocks your boat :P

DeePark beat Rockers today by 16 runs ..

Season is over for Rockers. Needing 195 to win from 30 overs, we were 86/1 from 14 overs with both Romeen and Shwetal well set. Shwetal got out trying to sweep a straight ball on the middle stump. We lost Romeen in the over after that when he was run out. This opened the flood gates. There were 6 run outs and the asking rate kept piling up. In the end we were short by 14 runs and Dee Park got a well deserved win for keeping their cool.
This season was nothing less than spectacular for us. Lost 4 games in the row, won the 5th and lost 6&7. After that there was no going back. 7 wins and a win against the NightHowlers in the fist play off game. We rose from the ashes and nearly pulled of a heist :)Good luck to the teams going into the finals!

Great results from div 2. Rogers park and qc kings for the finals..rogers park will love to get back to div 1 with a win and they would be deserving champs for they went and slugged it out in div 2.

Back to back division 2 finals for qc proving that last year was no flash in the pan. They are equally deserving of a div 1 spot after showing great consistency in the last 2 years.

Congrats to Juggernauts and Deepark too.. good luck this weekend to the finalists...

Hello Sheiks

Wanted to clarify a rule, how many Div I players can represent in a team in 30/30 - Since we will be playing you in finals , I wanted this to be clarified before the game

I have been hearing things about Dee park plays more than 2 div I players in 30/30, so wanted to check with you guys offhand and not on the game day

Appreciate your response

Congrats to the Winners this weekend ..

We once again lost to QC Kings .. I would say that Aggressive cricket beat Defensive/watchful cricket ..

All the Best to the Div 2 and 30-30 finalists next weekend !!!

Thanks everybody!!

Ssharath,
Only 2 guest players (Div 1 or Div2) can play in a game for any 30-30 team.

Who said Deepark plays more than 2 guest players? We only have Bhavesh and myself as guest players.

ssharathh said...

Thanks Sheiks for clarifying - what I heard was unwarrented so dont even bother, which is why I wanted to check

So , do we know which ground and what time is the finals - Please send us the flier so that we can pass it across to our supporters

Looking forward for the finals

Interesting Fact --
#3 seeded teams in the regular season in all divisions have made it to finals ... Pak Gymkhana, QC Kings, DeePark.

But Pak Gymkhana lost in the finals ... does this indicate QC Kings and DeePark will also lose in the finals ? :-)

DeePark became the 30-30 champions today beating Juggernauts in a nail-biter by 5 runs and 2 balls to spare ...

Deepark were all-out for 218 with Pratik, Nirav and Shekhs doing bulk of scoring ... Juggernauts chased brilliant, but were all-out for 210 when their last batsman was runout.

Congratulations DeePark and to Juggernauts too for a wonderful run in their opening season ...

Alpesh said...

Sorry .. Juggernauts lost by 8 runs ...

QC Kings 35/3 in 7 overs ... Aamir got 2 wickets in his first over - Anuj and Vishnu out for 0 ..

It was a heart breaking loss for Juggernauts in the 30/30 finals .

We fell short by 7 runs when we had 3 more balls to spare - We had the most controversial run out decision against us in the worst situation we could dream - The crucial wicket of Rupesh Mandala who was on 51 was given run out when we wanted 14 more runs to win in 8 balls, it was blatant decision from the leg-umpire.

Juggernauts had a great debut season, great work boys - just be proud of yourself and good luck to mcc management - oops sorry I meant Deepark XI :) !!

Thanks everyone for the support during the season.

QC Kings were absolutely gracious in defeat, and are one of the best spirited team we have played.. Good Luck to you guys next season..

Welcome back to Div 1. Yup, QC kings are great opponents. They play hard and fair!

Tough luck QC!!

QC Kings - hard luck !

Its amazing how both div 1 and div 2 finals were such a low scoring affair..I wonder if the pressure of the finals got to the players or what.. both Pak and QC have powerful batting line up and it was surprising to see the scorecards...

It was a terrific final - the best final of the 3 that were played by far, and an excellent chase of a big score by the Juggernauts. But this above is a little inaccurate, no? Werent there 17 needed to win off the last over? (ie must have been more than 14 off 8 balls?). Some tremendous hitting had brought it down to 29 to win off 3 overs.. but then Pratik bowled a terrific over for 6 runs IIRC, and then another 6 (or 7?) came off the penultimate over, leaving a very big ask in the last over.

It finally came down to 15 to win off 3 balls and looked ovver.. but then the bowler bowled a 5-wides! So it was 10 to win off 3, and still game on...but next ball was only a single, and a near-suicidal 2nd run was tried resulting in a pretty big runout, and thus allout (final margin 8 runs, 2 balls left). Terrific game, fought all the way to the end - even from 80-odd for 5 in 15 overs, the Juggernauts batting lineup took the fight all the way to the end.
Terrific game, and awesome weather for the finals too - it was sunny and 80 degrees, wish we could have all playoffs in that sort of weather :-)

It was a great game and I think we chased wonderfully to get there.

Dee Park IX played great initially to put a great total for chase esp Pratik's performance has been spotless. Great death bowling too from Pratik.

Juggernauts chased it perfectly and you cant ask more from the batsmen. I think we gave a few extra runs away upfront.

FingerOfDeath: Your numbers are accurate and I was the last man not out to witness all of this :(

Sharath and rest of the team is a little bit dissapointed with the runout decision of the Rupesh but its part of the game and we will come back next time.

Enjoy the off-season guys!

Yes, it was a quite outstanding chase, honestly. 218 in 30 overs is a lot, especially in a final.. a terrific start, and 40-odd for no loss in about 4 or so overs.. but then wickets fell, and it was 80-something for 5 in 15 overs. At that point the target seemed *very* far away to me.

But the Juggernauts kept coming, and kept it just about within reach. It was 95 or something needed in 10 overs, it was 56 in 5 or so IIRC (even then probably too far I thought)... but then some terrific hitting brought it down to 29 in 3! That was an amazing effort (huge six off Bhavesh in that over), match very much up in the air again. But then Pratik and Bhavesh bowled 2 very solid overs (6 and 7 apiece IIRC), to keep it to 17 in the last over, which is a lot to ask, really.

Awesome game though, and terrific first season by the Juggernauts. The last 2 seasons have seen this in 30/30 - last year in 2009 Centurions were new to our league with their South African contingent, and promptly won the 30/30 title before their players dispersed (mostly to Division One).. this year Juggernauts joined new, and went all the way to the finals. Great effort.

Meanwhile, BTW, Bhavesh and Sheks have probably become the first MCC players in history to ever capture a "TripleCrown".. they were part of Challengers as Challs won both the Division One title and the ALNT 20/20 title, and both were part of DeePark's 30/30 title this weekend as well. I dont think this has ever actually been done before in our league.

RPCC turned this into a very one-sided final (which I missed most of, caught partly in Chicago Marathon traffic :-) Apparently QC were 30/0 in 5 overs to start with.. and then Hari fell, and Aamir got both Anuj and Vishu in the same over. Arif then took 5, and Faraz 2 in an over, and it was 66 allout in 17 overs! Quite outstanding bowling effort, and an easy win in the end.

Terrific performance from RPCC - and a genuinely well-deserved title win. They deserve enormous credit - our league's history is littered with Division One teams that folded when they were relegated to Division Two, teams that broke up and dispersed, teams whose players had too little team-unity and too much arrogance to be willing to play in Division Two.

This is a shining example of one team that did things the right way - they took their demotion like men, they came down and played in Division Two, they stayed together as a group, with not a single player leaving their squad. They took their Division Two demotion the way everyone should but so few do, not as an end, but as an opportunity for a new beginning. To gell together as an outfit, to rebuild for the future with new players, to help veterans regain confidence and form - all of which not only won them the trophy this year, but will help them in their efforts in Division One next season.

RPCC deserves congratulations for winning a title and making it back to Division One. But more than that, this year they also deserve congratulations for doing the Right Thing.. and its nice to see that bring its well-deserved reward.

Shyam .. this is not fair .. if it numbers then I will beat Sadiq Sir ... :-)

Juggernauts required 68 from 7, 56 from 5, 43 from 4, 29 from 3, 19 from 1 overs .. and then 18 off 5 balls, 16 off 4 balls, 15 off 3 balls, 10 off 3 balls and and then there was the final run-out .. :-)

Shekhs said...

Ssharath,
It clearly shows your spirit for the game when you accuse us for fixing that game.

Just to clear your thought, you guys needed 19 runs of the last over.
The same Rupesh was plumb LBW on my bowling when he got hit by a fulltoss and asked for the runner.
The umpire didnt give him out then...I wonder why...maybe because the game wasn't FIXED...

Try to take the defeat in the right spirits and stop blaming the unmpire and the management for you loss....stand up..

I lost the respect I had for you guys, just because of your lacklustre accusation...but I'm glad you opened my eyes...

Thanks Sadiq for the kind words. And to all Division 1 Teams, this was not a walk in the park by any means. The rules are so competitive to make it back, that either almost a perfect season, or a perfect playoffs would guarantee a road back to Division 1. And being fallen many a times to a single bad day leading to the end of the season and your goals to get back to Divison 1, this is no small undertaking and no team can guarantee that kind of performance. This was a lot of hard work, and commitment on part of our guys. Rogers park through this has also made history, as the only Team in MCC to have won championships in both Divisions. Hopefully we will continue to enjoy our cricket back in Division 1, like we have had this year.

Well done!!

i think that he is wearing the new keeping pads that are pretty much like shin guards that hide inside the pants are fit to the leg so they are not visible. i had read something along these lines quite a while ago. although keeping without pads would be an interesting scenario.

Only two - like County Cricket in England, Indian domestic cricket went to a 2-tier system a few years ago. Every year 2 teams get promoted to Div1, and 2 get relegated to Div2, just like in our league :-)

Also, BTW, in Ranji Trophy Cricket, the top 2 Div2 teams that earn promotion to Div1 actually join the Div1 playoffs *that year itself*. That is, if Hyderabad (or Kerala) finishes this season as one of the top2 Div2 teams, they will join the Div1 playoffs this year itself in the quarterfinals (the top 2 Div1 teams this year in the regular season will earn a bye in the first round of the playoffs as a reward for their regular season performance). Our league used to do this too until a few years ago... maybe we should consider going back to it as well :-)

(a few years ago, Milwaukee United earned promotion from Div2.. and actually beat 2 Div1 teams in the Div1 playoffs and made it all the way to the semifinals of Div1 before losing. This was the first team a team had come up from Div2 playoffs to beat a Div1 playoff team.. and so the format was promptly changed at the end of that year :-)
