Sadiq bhai,
Read ur post on the previous blog and responded to it there.
In addition to what I mentioned there, if u look at peoria, bloomington and champaign which is all close by, we have three division 1 teams and no div 2 or 3 teams here..so the idea won't be fair to all of us.
Even if I leave out whether its good or bad for Rovers and think neutrally, this idea is not very sound as the teams individual identity will be lost. Remember, this will only help the talented CELEBRITY player to get more games. The average player won't get more games as teams will only look to fill 1 or 2 spots.
Playing for 2 leagues(acc and mcc) is different and playing for multiple divisions in the same league is different.
I believe, the team camraderie will be lost and it will be just a collection of few talented players who won't play as a team and will just play for themselves.

Looks like rain this weekend. What a dampener. Literally. Goodluck to all those guys who can actually get to squeeze in a game.
Dinesh,
You do have a point about team identity and average player situation.
Our goal is to lift the game of cricket along with 2 different key interests:
1. somehow save div 2
2. Keep our players within our league.
I do understand that away teams dont benefit much with this.
Once again, we are just tossing around the idea....great to see some feedbacks..
Glad to see you passed your blogger's certification test Preetam..
Yeah bud, bummer...rain is on the cards...hopefully a miracle will make it a passing cloud.. :-)
Phew!

Dinesh - couple points - though I see where youre coming from :-)
We shouldnt, IMHO, look at it just one year - remember, a year ago there was only 1 team in that area which was Div1, and 2 in Div2.. these things are pretty fluid, really. Today there is one Milwaukee team in Div1, and 2 in Div2.. maybe that changes again next year. The point is, there are 3-4 teams in the Bloomington/Peoria/Springfield/Urbana area; 3-4 in Milwaukee/Madison; 2 in StLouis etc. There are, IMHO, possibilities there.
Second, I actually dont think there will so many Celebrity Players who want to play, honestly :-) I think there are just people who want to play cricket, some of them great players, some not-so-great.. if you notice in the Guest Players in 30/30, hardly any of the league's All-Stars as such are playing. Mostly its people who want to play more - the true stars of our league, Shahid, Mehul,Nilesh, Asif, those kinds of guys, dont play as Guests in 30/30, and likely wouldnt swamp Div2 or anything either :-) There are a lot of players who may not get picked for all or most games in their main XI.. they still want to play cricket, too.. (bet you this will happen this year in Milwaukee - where a good guy is 12th man for Milwaukee Cricket Club in Div1, and is left not getting a game all weekend despite 2 Div2 Milwaukee games taking place, for eg).
Also, note, it works *both* ways - its not just Div1 players playing in Div2, its the other way too. If there is a good student player in Springfield (as happened with TarunReddy) - he wants to play for his team, obviously. But it wouldnt be a bad thing if he could get a few extra games in Div1 either IMHO - maybe joining you or PCC or something for a few games. I also dont see most "Guest Players" actually qualifying for playoffs.. just as in 30/30, most dont end up qualifying for playoffs, because they play less than 7 games (other than people like Romeen, who play 14 games for everyone :-)
Basically the idea is more freedom, more cricket. I think next year this is even more critical - 30/30 isnt going to have any guest players next year, all those guys who want more cricket will be even more tempted to go to the ACC if they dont have other avenues in our league. We've seen how ugly the MCC/ACC things have been in the past - Id hate to see that stuff raise its ugly head again :-)

---
Dinesh - since you said you want to look at the situation neutrally.. let me put to you one of the motivations behind this, to me :-)
First - the league is in deep trouble IMHO. Our Div2 this year is 13 teams (you remember it used to be 32 teams 4 yrs ago, Iam sure). Teams are playign each other twice to make up a schedule this year.
There are 2 views on the table. Merger of the 2 divisions, and saving the 2-tier structure.
To me, personal opinion, merger is a v bad idea. We have the single best cricketing division in the country IMHO - every match in Div1 fought tooth-and-nail, high quality cricket, beautifully balanced, no easy games for anyone all year long. Similar holds in Div2 too - you saw last year, Madison went from #1 to #9 with a 4-point swing in the last week! Balance in *each* division is great. To me, a merger would ruin this - there is a gap *between* the 2 divisions.. there would be a whole lot more one-sided games, there would be days again (like you saw in Div2 4 yrs ago) when you could walk into a field knowing youre going to win playing at 70%. This is a horrible thing for cricket, IMHO.
Second, IMHO a Merger could be *more* travelling for teams like Rovers, Arena. You guys would play "home and away" in a zonal system - ie 7 travel games a year, not including playoffs. (Or, if it is "zoned" to include Chicago teams, everyone has the same travel as today - just more one-sided games, with no improvement in travel).
So, to me, the answer is to save Div2. How? Well, 17 teams in Div1, 13 in Div2.. IMHO you have to eventually equalize the two over a 2-year period.. 15 teams per division, everyone plays everyone, 14 games, perfect.
The above, to me, is the obvious solution. But the problem is this - NOBODY from Div1 actually goes to Div2. Last 5 years, 10 teams should have been relegated.. only 2 actually were (the rest broke up so players could keep playing in Div1). (A moment to applaud AAA and Rogers Park here, please, for their great attitude to cricket). For some reason, Div1 players think of Div2 as a "junior league", one with low talent, not worth joining.
I think with Guest Players, we do 2 things. First, people get to see that Div2 cricket is of a decent standard too, that it also has good cricketers. Second, I believe that when a team is relegated, its players should automatically become "Primary Second Division" players the next season - they were, after all, relegated from Div1. But with the Guest Player system, they could still continue to play Div1 cricket.. while still playing as a team in Div2, attempting to earn promotion back to Div1.
Basically, I think we somehow have to incentivize Div1 teams to actually somehow accept relegation when theyre actually relegated - to play in Div2 and try and earn promotion again. I think the Guest Player system could be an important vehicle in doing that. Without that, IMHO, the league collapses into itself - and a merger happens, where we lose the best thing our league has going, which is incredible balance and competition in every single game, no real "easy games" on a schedule all season. This is a huge thing - we dont know how lucky we are to have it IMHO (I have friends in other leagues playing on "good teams", who say they have 15 games a year, of which about 4 are "worth playing" - the rest are boring, where you know youre going to win beore stepping onto the field. They miss the day-in-day-out competitiveness and battle of our league tremendously, where "Any Given Sunday" any team can beat another.. IMHO we need to do all we can to preserve that specialness our league has).
Anyway, all IMHO. YMMV :-)

Gentlemen,
A slot has opened up for 30-30, as one of the teams dropped out last minute.
Please contact alpesh@midwestcricket.org/ shekhs@midwestcricket.org or call my cell if you know any team that wants to play 30-30.
Thanks
Shekhs Aravind
New regulations such as free hit and 2 points for tie and using head-head standings to separate teams are good, but what about power plays?
First 8 overs mandatory and then 2 blocks of 4 overs each for bowling and batting side to choose?
Shekhs,
Which 30/30 team dropped out, if you can disclose that info :)?
For next year, is it confirmed that there wont be any guest players in 30/30? I know majority of the 30/30 teams voted against guest players.
I am for guest players but it will be strange, for me, to represent two teams in the same division...
Mitul,
Cognizant Firebirdz. We should have a replacement team soon, so it shouldnt impact anything.
Yeah, since we voted on that, we will remove that rule from 30-30. so no more guest players in 30-30 in 2011.
Hi everybody! Its been a long winter.
I have learnt to always agree with Sadiq (especially as a batsman, when it comes to LBW decisions ;)).
But he brings up some great points here.
I think we have to keep Div 2 alive, for a couple reasons. It would become very difficult to manage one huge division, besides, a lot of teams will never get to play a large number of teams.I also agree that we need to incentivise div-2. What would prevent relegated div-1 teams from not entering div-2? Maybe if we increased the chances of these teams to play at a div-1 level in their first post-relegation season?Maybe we could have the top 4 teams from div-2 become a part of the playoffs for div-1. That way, if you got relegated and you think you have a pretty solid team, then you do your best in your div-2 season, make it to the top 4 and guess what, you are back in the div-1 playoffs again! I know this will come with many issues and headaches, but its just an idea, it can be fine tuned/modified significantly. Another way of keeping div-2 healthy is to in fact have guest players.I disagree with Dinesh that only celebrity/star players will benefit from this.By no stretch of imagination am I a celebrity or star player, but I have to say I have tremendously enjoyed playing for different teams, made some new friends, established strong relationships, and hopefully helped these teams in return.
I believe that there should be complete freedom in playing cricket and I thought of an analogy that I wrote sadiq in an email and hesitate to reproduce it on a forum such as this :)
LMLM Romeen!!!
Welcome back bud...glad you came outta hibernation..
straight_drive,
We thought about implementing the power play rules, but decided to introduce next year after some umpiring training sessions.
We need the umpires to be on top of this before we introduce that.
Thanks, Sheky,LMLM = much better than RTH :)
so Rom, you think tango will be back this year? :-)

Cats over AAA, just because we have to make things even, we lost to them last year :-)

Did you bottle whatever you took over the winter, so I can give a dose of it to everybody? ;-) (now if only I can find a similar dose that works on bowlers too!)

I like this idea quite a bit, actually... in the spirit of "how do we reduce dependence on foreign oil", the correct answer is d)All of the above IMHO..to save Div2 (and by extension our league), equalize divisions, allow Guest Players (with Primary 2nd division on relegation), *and* including Div2 teams in Div1 playoffs... combination will hopefully work!
Depending on a few things, stuff can be "tweaked" - 4 Div2 teams in Div1 playoffs might be one option, or else 2 Div2 teams? The top 2 Div2 teams used to come up to Div1 playoffs until only 4 years ago after all! That rule had been in effect for several years, but was promptly removed once a Div2 team that came up actually *beat* a Div1 team in the playoffs :-) (Milwaukee United, who beat 2 of them and went all the way to the Div1 semis that year. Div2 had a bad feeling about it back then too - that the rule was removed as soon as they actually won!)
This also provides an incentive for the regular season - the top 2 seeds (or top 4 seeds) of Div1 get a "bye", which encourages a harder fight for the top of the table rather than just settling for a playoff spot. In those days Div2 playoffs would start a week before Div1 playoffs, and the 2 finalists would come up to Div1 playoffs (and play the Div1 pre-QFs as a back-to-back game IIRC). I *know* it provided incentive for Div2 teams back then.. teams like Rising Stars, featuring players like Afroze, Jahangir, Arif, Bharat, Dimpy et al, not only hoped to make Div2 playoffs during the season, but to even go far in Div1 playoffs once they made it up there).

Let me be the first to openly disagree with the Prez (not to mention Naren :-).. I think everyone is underrating the Flames, who are loaded this year IMHO, one of the real contenders to me.
They were a fine young team last year, almost made the playoffs (before being controversially pipped at the post - which makes this week's game even "spicier", the obvious "Game of the Week" IMHO :-) This year the Flames have loaded up - 2 of the best young talents in the league joining them (in Jacques and Quentin Gerber), very good add in Jason (captain of 30/30 champs Centurion last season), plus a new lefty-allrounder recruit from out West, Sikander, plus, IIRC, another new good middle-order bat (whose name Iam blanking on at the moment). Add that to Fahad, Moin, Kiran, Krishna.. bowling options in the squad of Nasir, Shankar, Yousuf-bhai, Quentin, Krishna, Sikander, Jason, Jacques, Fahad, Moin!! Ram will be a big-time loss.. but thats one of the best young sides in the business IMHO. I'll pick em to not just win this week, but go very far this season in general.

I agree with this. I also think, BTW, that it would be a bad idea to introduce PowerPlays without first fixing our RainRule - the worst RainRule in the history of the world IMHO :-) If one team ended up having PowerPlays for 16 out of the first 20 overs (and the "20 over score" decides the match), its beyond unfair!
I really do think we can and should go to DL next season for rain-affected games. It really isnt as complicated as people think IMHO - there is a "Club Cricket DL" version out there, used by leagues in the USA as well as England/Australia regularly. You can have one single laminated sheet of paper, that gives an easy multiplier for targets etc.. its the fairest method, it actually takes wickets fallen into account (in cricket 120/0 after 20 overs is very different from 120/8 after 20 overs in a 40-over-match).. I really believe we can implement this relatively easily and successfully next season. (And, IMHO, *after* that we can think of PowerPlays :-)
c8w
Shekhs,
Do we need to take a vote on introducing the DL method this season or can we just implement it? We badly need a solution for rain afected games.
Romeen bhai aka RTH :-)..
I will start a thread soon on the blog soon about the DL method we are planning to use. Let us see if teams found it easy to implement enough. But most probably, I see it coming into effect from next year only.
I hate typos, I meant rain *affected.
Appu, I think we should try and implement it this year, if there are any issues, we can iron them out in the off season.
And only men who 'really' like me call me RTH.
Romeen bhai aka RTH,
I definitely and really like the name :-) I will discuss your feedback about the DL method in our next meeting and then go from there ...
I guess before changing much of the league basic rules, If new management can try to run this league as it is, with its current form and standard successfully without major issues, would be more than enough for the first year.
Don't open pendora's box when u already have a lot on your plate as freshies.
MCC_MURGHA,
you are the first murgha to talk some sense.
I'll make you my new advisor.
Yes sir, we'll try our best to keep up the current standard as much as we can.
Rom rom,
You see, we dont want to bring in too many changes.
And D/L rule???
seriously, you dont like me much do ya??
If we bring in the D/L rule, I'll announce my WAKE myself...you can buy a suit for that...
Finger,
I'm glad you openly disagree with me...hahaha...
Yeah first week got some good games:
The most interesting one would be united vs flames : >> @Naren "United over Flames, tough one but i will probably take United over flames just my pick not to hurt anyone" - If Shiraz is there umpire then flames dont have any chance anywayz ;)....hope the season not gonna start with controversy as Sadiq mentioned if same ppl were involved with whatever happened last season to keep'em out of playoffs.
Naren but I would go with your rest of the picks for DIV I
@ Shekhs >>>you are the first murgha to talk some sense......LOL :)
badboy,
You can use any ball that MWCC provided..
But it has to be MWCC provided..
Let me know if you have any questions regarding this.
The key is to be uniform in using the balls.
Please check with the umpires before you use your balls.
Thanks
Shekhs
Moe,
Between my job and my new job, one thing that will keep me sane is this blog.
I need this as much as anything else.... :-)
I will find some time to blog..hahaha
30/30 and DIV-2 decline is definitely a genuine issue, but messing up DIV-1 ur greatest asset which has been producing national level cricketers, may not be the way.
Some kind of flexibility of players playing in multiple divisions might help teams to raise their game but at the same time give those players a chance within MWCC who want more cricket.
I think as far as we are improving all forms of cricket, the concerns from those teams on D2/30-30 who are scared of good players from DIV-1 rolling them ever should not even be an issue, its raising the bar for all. They can always play book cricket at home if they cant enjoy a little challenge.

Thanks for the confidence in my ability of making non-biased decisions.. Love the pre-match allegations, makes me wonder, ahh, not really..:). I will try my best to do a fair job, and rest is upto Flames, United and God keeping my senses sharp.. :) Hopefully either Faisal or Fahad will play a chanceless inning and bat the other team out of the game. One sided games usually have no controversy.. :)
Either ways, all the teams in MCC should take the Umpiring feedback from the game very seriously
MCC MURGHA said "hope the season not gonna start with controversy as Sadiq mentioned"
Touché to that Dear MURGHA.. Hopefully we'll see a bunch of good games and more importantly a good dry/warm weekend

And, is that all the time, or just on the cricket field?
Isn't that reaching a little too much into people's personal lives?
WE WANT LESS GOVERNMENT!!!!
MCC_MURGHA,
bud, lets let bygones be bygones..and not make any allegations..
We can only move forward together...
I believe shiraz is one of the best and most non biased umpires we have in the league.
Shiraz, I have faith in you bud..
Adi and all..
I'm glad you caught the PUN in my statement..hahaha..
Yeah, the goal is to get up and personal...just kiddin..
nice one ice_cold..
Folks,
The MwCC schedule has been frozen. Hopefully there won't be any unforseen events that cause reschedules such as rain-outs.
Good luck to all the teams.
And yes, tough back-to-back schedule for the chargers to open the season, but that is what they requested.
Good luck - I hope they pull out both wins!!! Sorry P.

Hey, Shiraz is one of the better umpires in the league, and has done tons of big games in our league - playoffs, finals etc. There should not even be the thought of a controversy if he's assigned to a game - I doubt even the Flames would think that (despite your allegation above)! And neither Shiraz (nor RP) were anywhere in the picture with the controversies last year anyway. We umpires take plenty of criticism, its part of the job, and we require a thick skin - we understand that. But its a bit rough to criticize one of us before a single ball is bowled in the season :-)
I doubt the game will be controversial anyway - but it should be a very good game. Flames and United has long been a good rivalry, and United just made the playoffs at the end of last year, while Flames lost out ending up 9th and feeling hard done by - that will probably add more motivation to do well on the field, but thats as far as it goes IMHO. Flames will be fired up and ready to put their best foot forward (which is part of the reason I stepped out and picked them, BTW.. the other being the possible absence of Mehul in the United lineup ;-)

Oh ok, I thought it was just the typical screwup from the Scheduling Commitee ;-)
No, seriously, I know they requested it - theyre thinking further along into the season, they want fewer games during Ramzan basically. But its a brutal way to start the season! (Though, given the weather forecast, its not a certainty you get 2 full games this weekend, either.. hopefully WP is back to draining like it always did before last season, and you can play literally 30 minutes after the end of a thunderstorm, basically by just sweeping water off the concrete).

By the way as far as I know about this blog, accusations and allegation have always been the crux of this blog and the group of ppl who admin it. It only enhancely marketing the ugly image of the league, it's mgmt and dirty politics around it. So plz don't teach me the moral standards of this blog, I will not even go close to what most of ubhabe already passed long time ago.
As far as who is controversial we all know that really well. I would like to stay away from that dirty pond of ppl n few very well known teams in that category.
It's kind of ironic n obvious that most of the poor ppl on this blog who talk most about the practical aspects of cricket, have never been good at it on the field or have never played good standard cricket in any of the cricketing nation. Infact even mcc div 1 standard is too damn high for them.
but I gotta admit Its funny and entertaining.
This blog will be relatively inactive now compared to previous years becuase the blog establishment is essentially the Midwest admin now , lol... Anyways good luck to sheks, Mo , and rest of the team in their first year. Looking forward to the season opening weekend.
Moaz
hahaha Moaz...interesting point..
but please dont consider us as blog admins anymore.
We use the blog to get feedback, that includes positive criticism.
Nobody is perfect, and we want you folks to let us know when we screw up.
So this is the best place to do so.
To call us out, just like we all did with the previous management.
Lets not be different, lets make sure we have a CHECK in place and keep the current management on their TOES.
I wanted to make it clear that Flames have no issues with Shiraz or anyone which league assigns as an umpire :)
Thanks Sadiq for your comments above and I agree with you that Shiraz's umpiring record speaks for itself.
Sheks, send me a msg if you are downtown tonight.
You are absolutely right MCC MURGHA. The Blog is only good when it's Spicy.. I am absolutley not offended. Freedom of speech/Blog is the best part of the Bill of Rights.
Your opinion is your property. While I, or others might disagree, with you, I think we all can learn to co-exist with difference in opinion.
Now, I have to get back to scheming things for the weekend... Just Kidding.. :)
The weather is looking good, Good Luck to all the Teams.
Thanks Nasir, I know. Hopefully we will have a great game tomorrow.
And Nasir, I would be downtown with you tongiht, but then you can get a 5fer tomorrow, and there might be more allegations.. so enjoy..
Nasir....my man...you betcha..
will txt you if i'm downtown..
Good luck to all the teams!!
I just have my point of view like everyone else here, as far as we can speak our minds within a limit it's all good.
it's really funny how ungliwalla brings up the topic, and then proceeds to tell flame_murghi to not go there. mmm, mmm, don't go there girlfreind. ;) no you didn'
gud luck against united murghi.
Mcc_murgha brought up a valid point, so I want to clarify something.
This blog is not the property of or administered by the current management. This blog is administered independently and everyone has the freedom to express their opinion - including bashing the current management!! :) My only request has always been that it must be done within certain standards of decency, otherwise I will remove your comment.
There are certain people who are writers on this blog that are on the current management. They have the freedom to write any article they wish that is about cricket. I had offered the blog as a tool to communicate with the league during transition, but now that is complete.
Shekhs, Shiraz, etc are all people who read the blog and express their opinions like anyone else. Administration is handled by others.
The idea behind this blog is to facilitate cricket and communication in the Midwest region - not to promote any one person, management, or agenda.
Have fun!!
Aditya... as much as I would like to agree with you about "the blog not having any agenda or a certain group of ppl behind it", it might be true now but we all know the history of this blog in last few years.
But for the sake of civility lets all pretend now that we are a one big happy family :).
New Mgmt or Old mgmt they are both two sides of a coin to me.
But hats off to these ppl who got enough passion to put so much time and effort just to run the league for minor personal ego boast n social perks.
Enjoy ;)
