Playoff Week 1

So the much awaited Playoffs are now finally going to start. Div 1 playoff spots all decided by now by the controversial tie game rule, while for Div 2, last 2 spots are yet to be decided. Two teams from Giants, Springfield and Collinsville will go through.

So it is going to be super weekend, with all the 4 QFs being played at Washington Park... on both days.

Also 30-30s are well into the semi-finals zone now. With Rockers - Panthers and TrailBlazers - Centurions playing the Semi-Finals, these matchup of evenly matched up teams will guarantee great games.

Lets see which teams look favourites to go all the way through in all the three divisions ...

Hi Speed, I don't know who you are and obviously you really don't know who i am or the Eagles. We have never condoned such behaviour and never will.
This season was new for us and we tried a whole lot of things to make it a winning combination. Going into a inconsequential game for us we wanted to use this oppurtunity to experiment with our new players. A lot of players who did not get oppurtunities this year were given a chance to prove themselves. By doing that we knew it would be difficult for us to win but nevertheless wanted to see what our new potential is all about. We tried and we lost. Fair and square.
Please look at the scoresheet after it is posted if you have any more doubts about our commitment.
thx,
-preetam

I second Preetam Sir !! We few guys were practising at Hanover Park nets when the match was being played .. Eagles were playing hard, but they had just changed the batting order to give oppurtunity to their players .. Even one of their batsman got hit on the face and had to retire hurt .. This kind of stuff would have never happened .. if the match was 'fixed' .. :)

The Playoff game of the year - "Muslim Gym Vs. Pak Gym"..
if I dont have a game that day..I will buy courtside seats for that one...

I was also on the ground at the eagles game, and i know the team plan was to play "slow"....

Why did you guys lose in 15 overs?

Also yes I predicted wrong about the centurions and happily so...im glad mwca's roster in which there were more guest players than original players finally got upset...

in 30 30 i think that it is really a tough contest but:

Rockers vs Panthers- Rockers because of Varuns inspired spell and their outstanding depth...this team are favorites for the cup

Trailblazers vs Centurions- trail. They were able to beat warriors despite the big guns not clicking.

Dinesh_Rovers said...

We thought Giants will be No 7 if they won the last game.. But looking at points table, they are No 8 and springfield is No 7.

Who knows? this might change based on what happens to Madison..So, Rovers who finished 2nd might face Giants, Springfield or XXXX...

I am jealous of the No. 3-8 teams that qualified that at least know who their opponents are:

Flash news: Rovers have been informed that they will face Giants batting and Springfields bowling...LOL

Rajiv said...

Springfield have not updated their loss against Jaguars. Not sure if that will affect the runrate a lot though.

Also Madison have not updated 2 of their scores. So if they are in the playoffs then their runrate and Arena's runrate is too close... so 3rd and 4th spot will be close.

If Madison is out:
CCI vs. Giants -> CCI
Rovers vs. Springfield -> Rovers
Arena vs. Jaguars -> can't pick
Titans vs. QC Kings -> Titans

If Madison is in:
CCI vs. Springfield -> CCI
Rovers vs. Jaguars -> can't pick
Arena vs. QC Kings -> Arena
Titans vs. Madison -> Titans

Why they reduced to 30 overs while all the games were 40 overs?

Is RUP available to answer this ???
or is he a part of this conspiracy??

Regarding to Flames and Eagle game----> how can be that game fixed, while only one team benefited, while other way United and Muslim both were benefited.
So I don't think that Flames / Eagle were fixed.
Second thing U"mpire for Flames / Eagle game is no were closer to any team members so he will surely catch such this kind of behaviour, while Questioning regarding other game, Rup is always ready to shorten the game so he can start partying early. And that's how Rup is!!!!!

This is part of the game at the end of season, Teams are not part of palyoffs, they knew that so they will do trial and error to come out strong next year. While flames had a chance to enter in to palyoffs, so their strategy worked according to their plan.
Ealges are not the only team that lost in 15 overs, there are many strong team that fallen with hmiliation in past also.
This is fast paced game and by the way if you can't play fast eough that doesn't mean other teams have to play according to your plan.

Ungli Baba is right over. We’ve to find cheaters, who are trying to destroy this league.

Why Muslim Gym and United are always in these kind of incidents. Do we still think these kind of people are capable to run this league?

Both teams needs to be disciplined or put on probation. Any future disciplinary issue should result in their team/individual suspension. We don’t need these kind of teams in this league.

haha Rajiv, looks like you are new to this league :).. if you did not know this league is pro-walkovers. They will do everything in their incapacity to try and create circumstances that promote walkovers... so far they have executed the plan to perfection.

As all of the fake name user don't have the courage to show there identity, I Moe of muslim gymkhana want to say a few words regarding our game against United. It seems very contriversial that our game ended up as a tie. But here are few facts. The game was 30 over due to the fact it was being continued from where it ended to. THEREFORE FLAMES knew what our NRR would be. Rup was sent my managment and If there are any issues they can ask him.I ASK Why flames game was moved from WASHINGTON park to heritage when ground 3 was availabe and they were orignally schduled to play there. WHY wasent there any investigation when royals and wildcats tied??? WHERE were you guys when BEARS AND CHALLENGERS TIED TO KICK US OUT OF PLAYOFFS AND ENSURE BEARS MAKE THE PLAYOFFS LAST YEAR AND BHAVISH DIDNT EVEN SWING AT THE LAST BALL AND TIED THE GAME???? We played in front of 3 other teams which included players from challengers, royals wildcats, etc.

THIS LEAUGE DOESN'T DESERVE THIS KINDA ACTIONS FROM TEAMS. HOWEVER INFACT OF BITCHING ON BLOG HELP THIS LEAUGE COME UP WITH BETTER RULES SO ENSURE CRICKET IS PLAYED IN THE RIGHT SPIRIT!!!!!

tatabybycu said...

Moe, the idea of a blog and having identities is to make sure things do not get personal. there is nothing wrong with that.. some leg pulling or prodding in my opinion is fine.

I agree with you and most here. A tie is a legitimate result for a game, just because it is a low probability event does not mean the game was fixed. Calling people cheaters without evidence is not correct... there is a process in place to handle this. Rup can report his findings in the umpiring summary and the league will take action. And that is precisely the reason we have a league and a body to govern controversial incidents.

I will however disagree with you on one aspect. Just because something went unnoticed or deliberately tolerated last year does not mean it should not be questioned this year. Now dont taze me!! I am just saying that argument is not very sound.

MastaKilla said...

i think that the aus pak match wouldve been fixed the other was to make an india vs pak final so that it would draw a bigger crowd to the game. more crowd = more money...and when aussies collapsed i thought for sure it was fixed but then again i was proven wrong. i think that the muslim and united game would be kind of hard to fix with rup being the ump. i mean i wouldve understood if the ump was someone else but not with rup. again this is just my 2 cents.

Guys,

Lets not jump to conclusions about what happened that game and accuse people of cheating.

As for these results, well, whether or not it was setup is difficult for me to assume. However, what I have noticed is that we only have ourselves to blame. It's not like this is new! This happens all the time:

1. A few years ago, the Chargers got a walk over from Pak Gym to stay in Div 1.
2. Muslim Gym lost to Rogers Park by a huge margin to make the playoff race competitive.
3. Bears tied with the Challengers and made it to the playoffs.
4. Now Muslim Gym and United tied so that both make it to the playoffs.

I'm not accusing any of these teams of any wrong doing at this time. There are many other questionable games/results out there that I haven't listed. My point is, this happens every year and impacts playoff races and relegation. There are a lot of other decisions that occur regarding scheduling, umpiring, etc that can also be questioned in the same vein.

So, the league should adopt better rules to prevent it.

1. The total worth of a game should only be 4 points. If you're going to have a tie, let it be 2 points each, not 3.

2. Also, ties should not be allowed, specially at our level. Have a bowl-off or 1 over hit out to ensure that 1 team is the winner and 1 the loser. Maybe allow for a creative points allocation too.

3. Change the playoff qualifications so that it becomes less likely to be manipulated.

4. Implement harsh penalties on any misbehaviour.

5. Ensure 2 neutral umpires.

6. Be proactive - not reactive. And if you're reactive, then react quicker.

7. Finalize a schedule and stick to it. Implement contingency plans ahead of time and consistently for rain-outs or other issues.

The real question is, what will be done and what will you do about it?

Aditya said...

PS. By that game, I actually mean the Flames vs Eagles and United vs Muslim games.

moe moe said...

I agree with adi, i hate the fact there is 6 points for a game that is worth 4 points to begin with, Also there should never be a tie situation and even if there is we should use what adi mentioned above. Also the nrr should be eliminated in case the points are equal then the winner of team played head to head game should go foward. These few changes will eliminate cheartes and any doubt of cheating!!!!!
Speed sensation we had nine players on the ground!!! Also we had to use the same players we started with against the United team when our game was held off. RIZWAN IS IN PAK AND CAN'T BE REPLACED. If you ALL don't know all the facts then just hush or ask rather then accusing us or the leauge. I am done explaining about this game lets move on to other better things in cricket and life thank you all!!!!!

As far as flames or Mwca i don't think its fair to there players to be accused of situations due to the fact tariq is part of the team. I think they get the worst of it from all other teams.

PAK vs AUS GAME WAS A SETUP LOL ALMOST HAD A TIE CRICKET ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!!!!!

sorry sheks i had to use the ammo i got and ur team was a part of it:) nothing personal against u or ur team but last year we didn't talk crap about bearS or u guys!!! Disagree with this 2nd part - why should there not be a tie? First of all, if there is a "no tie" rule, the simplest thing to do is go back to the way the ICC *used* to run things in ODIs - ie, the team that lost the fewer wickets is declared the winner. No need for "bowlouts" etc (which, after all, test only one aspect of the game to start with).

But, thats only if there is a "no tie" rule - and I dont agree with that to start with. A tie is IMHO a legitimate result in a game - it happens rarely, but it is legitimate. I agree entirely that it should NOT be worth 3 points... but thats a different matter.

IMHO, if a tie happens, you split points - just as you do in the case of a rainout etc. We already have split-points for rainouts in our league - its not like every single game is being played from start to finish. GIven that, IMHO it makes no sense to just declare "there ought to be no ties, and all games should have a decision" - they dont already. But a tie should not be worth *more* than splitting-points - thats where the talk of "fixes" comes in.

>3. Change the playoff >qualifications so that it >becomes less likely to be >manipulated.

I agree. Mentioned this in the other thread - most leagues have long done away with Net Run Rate as a main-tiebreaker, because it is so susceptible to manipulation. The first tiebreaker should always be head-to-head result between the two teams (in case of 3-way-tie, most wins in games between the 3-teams concerned, etc).

And the 2nd tiebreaker should be # of wins, the 3rd tiebreaker # of quality-wins (ie wins against teams making the playoffs that year).. and only after that should Net-Run-Rate even be considered as a tiebreaker. This way, any "manipulation" would basically be eliminated by itself, IMHO.

>4. Implement harsh penalties on >any misbehaviour.

Agree with this - Id go so far as to say that if any "matchfixing" is PROVED, it should automatically trigger the death-penalty! That is, suspension for a year, and return only in Division Two after a year's break, not Division One. Matchfixing is the worst thing possible - if there is proof of it happening, the penalties should be draconian to make sure it never ever happens in our league.

(Id personally also like other draconian penalties for behaviour, BTW :-) That is, if someone throws a punch on the field, for example, it automatically triggers a one-calendar-year ban, ie a 12-month-ban - that sort of thing).

Unknown said...

>5. Ensure 2 neutral umpires.

For the regular season, or playoffs? FOr the regular season it is only possible if there is a lot more money available to the league - which means finding decent-sized sponsorships in the future. (This is not impossible, BTW - in Michigan they pay their umpires $100 per game, and have 2 neutral umpires in every game; ie they have $200 in umpiring costs in every game, as opposed to our $75 per game. They can do this because they have huge sponsorships from Indian and Pakistani businesses in the area - something our league seriously lacks at the moment). Thus it can be done - but is probably more of a long-term idea, not something that will happen next season, sadly.

>6. Be proactive - not reactive. >And if you're reactive, then >react quicker.

Another thing I agree with BTW :-) An example would be this MuslimGym/United game - it was first played in what, July? And was suspended with 24 overs left, and "to be continued"? It should have been finished within a week or two after the original date at most - not at the end of the season! That way at least it would be easier to get the same players back to continue the game (Rizwan wouldnt be in Pakistan for MuslimGym; United wouldnt be playing with 9 players, one of whom had broken his finger over the next 2 months and couldnt be replaced etc).

The same applies to behaviour penalties too - it would be nice if the penalties were decided and enforced within a week or two at most. (The Maqsood Raza incident in StLouis happened in about July too IIRC - but the penalty was in September. Better late than never, of course.. but ideally it ought to happen much sooner, if at all possible. Still, in this case we must give management credit for actually imposing strict penalties for behaviour this year as above - it was great to see it happen, IMHO).

>7. Finalize a schedule and stick >to it. Implement contingency >plans ahead of time and >consistently for rain-outs or >other issues.

Agree again. IMHO, when the schedule is made for the entire season at the start, the playoff schedule ought to be made at the same time too! Thus, it would say in the schedule at the start of the year itself, for example "October 3, QF Div2, #1 vs #8, Ground 1, WP; Oct4, QF Div1, #1 vs #8, Ground 1 WP" and so on. So at least playoff teams would know beforehand what days they would be playing a potential quarters, semis and finals... and could plan around it right from the start (ie trips to India or Pakistan and so on)... ok, it might change by a week sometime for weather-postponements or whatever ,but thats only if its unavoidable.. but the basic skeleton of the playoff schedule should be up right from the start of the season if possible IMHO, so people werent in doubt until midway thru playoff week as to when their playoff games actually are going to take place.

Some of these things are relatively easy fixes, really - hopefully they can be done for next year itself.

So do we know what this issue is, BTW? I looked at their playoff game scorecard, and they had an interesting outfit - apart from 2 "guest players" from Div1, they also had Vaibhav and Shameer (who fit into the U-21 category and play several divisions simultaneously), and then they had Sudhir (who used to be a Div1 player, but is only 30/30 this year - he got 47* to take them to a win, too). This looked strange to me at first glance, but I presume its all legal (since U21 are allowed to play any division and dont come under the "Div1 guest player" quota etc, right?)

Yes, rain-affected games are continued in the playoffs - this is a rule from a few years ago, there is no 20-over-rule for playoff games (and a good rule it is, too - the 20-over-rain-rule is the single worst and most unfair rule in our league, at least it is right that we dont inflict it on teams in playoffs, and playoff games are played to a finish).

As for travelling teams.. it would depend on when the interruption came I suppose. Its happened before - StLouis, Milwaukee, Purdue etc, all have been interrupted in playoff games by rain (usually it happened when about 15 overs were left in the match IIRC).. in those cases, the game was "continued" a week later, early in the morning (we had an 8am start for the continuation) to make sure they finished before 10am. And then the winner played the next round of their playoffs starting at 10am itself. Its difficult, but its the only option there is (the playing teams were, IIRC, offered the choice of coming back the next weekend on Saturday and finishing, and playing the next round on Sunday - but all chose to come back Sunday very early morning instead, finish their game then, and play the next round pretty much right afterwards).

as always c8w, I agree with most og your fixes and think ur right on the money with your comments.

From what I understand you are saying our umpires are relatively underpaid? That would explain why there is not much of a supply. Increasing the $ for umpiring is a great idea to get more people volunteering. By the way, for all practical purposes most of the $s we pay as league fees goes into into paying umpires. If only most teams realize this..

I think 2 neutral umpires is going to be very difficult. we are talking doubling the #s. Hey! here is an idea may be we should just double the league fees and mandate 2 umpires.. esentially teams that umpire more would get their money back.. teams not serious would drop out and others would reorganize.

Getting funding is a great idea, I however think the marketing effort would have returs only in 2011/12.. next year is going to be a tough one for all businesses.

BTW, all watch out for the announcement at 1PM if chicago bags the olympics or not.. at 1.01 we may have to begin massive reorganization of the league!

Doesnt it make sense to play the Div 2 games on Sunday in someother place?? The last thing that we want is the tournament to go past Oct 17th.. Its already getting very late and no chance to practice anymore as it gets dark by 630..Its very hard to find 11 guys to travel also this late :(

Pak Gym vs. Muslim Gym (tbd) - tough to call, if Shahid is there and Pak Gym use there spinners appropriately then its their game. or Muslime Gym exploit Pak's medicore medium pace bowling attack then Muslime Gym is a winner. Spinners are key in this game.

Rajiv said...

Satish,
it says 50% chance of rain and 53degrees. Bad weather for cricket. The rain starts around 12 and since all games have a travelling game these games won't start before 11. I'm not too confident about tmr.

Rajiv .

I suggest you check with Tariq for the start time for your game .. Our game with QC Kings is starting at 10 AM ...

It is going to be tough to play in this weather .. lets see ........

FYI: All playoff games start at 10:00 am...
that goes for the travelling teams as well...

Rajiv/ Satish....the games are gonna start at 10..and god forbid if it rains, then we'll continue the games from where it was left off..

I know its hard for the travelling teams....you have to bite the bullet...

we let them win in 15 overs.
thats all i am going to say....
i don't want to say anything else.............

BTW, i will be looking for another team next. i will play in div II or 30-30 league. cause i am not that famous anyways that any div I team might accept me.

and just like our game, muslims and united game was definitely setup too. but muslims will see the result in the first round against pak.

anyways muslim has two man team anyways. they are going to loose for sure if not in first round than next round they will loose for sure.

Guys,

There's no reason to suspect teams simply because Flames or Tariq is involved. Personal animosity against Tariq or anybody cannot be the criteria for judging other teams.

Personal animosity against Tariq cannot be the criteria for judging Flames as a team as well.

It pains to hear these allegations against us in the first place.

The game was inconsequential for us, even if it had been any other opponent. Check our batting order or the bowling options in the last matches we played over the years.

Rup said...

ok..folks...here is my post on the United/Muslim game...this is an will be my only post on this...

I was asked to finished up a game that started a while back...
United started at at 36/0 needing 139 to win off 24 0overs..the game never went any one way..played evenly leaving united needing 45 off the last 6 overs. came down to 18 off the last 2 overs..10 off the last..
Mehul facing the last over..scored 2,2,0,4,0,1.. they tried to get 2 off the last ball to win but RUN OUT SAW ONLY 1 THUS A TIE.

Muslim played with only 8 guys but united gave them one to help field..they fielded agessively not jogging after balls..they took couple good catches and bowled well..they said players who originaly started the game were not available to finish the game.

As for the spin i think the brothers bowled well and helped checked the runs for a while. In the end we can all say what we feel but I did not see a fix game..I call it like I SEE IT..and understand why the critics see it different because of their own reasons.

i remember arguing against the 3 points tie..it has now come back to haunt the same people who wanted it..can't have it both ways i guess..

good luck to all the teams in the play offs.

one thing i noticed this season is that no matter how good you are you must be consistent.

in that regard hats off to faisal baig! even if he fixes matches, he is consistenly scoring nd i respect that.

there are a few very talented youngsters in our league who need to be nurtured to be consistent!

Fahad is consistently scoring runs. . . but no other youngster is consistent. . . moin, jacques, quintin, vibav, salman are all fantastic talents and on their day they really dominate the opposition... but when it is not their day it is really evident...

i think the MWCA should look to provide some quality coaching to these youngsters... i believe each one of these guys can represent the US...they certainly have the talent...

Hi Rajiv,

I was really surprised that you guys were all out for 103. I always thought you guys had one of the most potent batting line ups in Div 2. Just a bad batting day, conditions and great bowling from Arena?

Anyways, saw that you guys put up a great fight claiming 7 wickets in defense of 103.

Anyways, congratulations to Arena for becoming the first semi finalists in Div 2. Hopefully, we will join them :)

Rajiv is more qualified to answer, obviously, since I wasnt there... but while Jaguars are a very powerful batting lineup, Arena (from what I recall) is an outstanding bowling lineup at full strength. At least, from what I saw last year, they were an excellent bowling lineup when they had their first XI - Saurabh, Sameer, Keshav, Sagar, Ajoy etc, all mostly former Div1 bowlers. Ive never seen their new potent lefty pacer - but if he's as good as advertised, then their bowling must be very good indeed! Given difficult batting conditions, it may not be *that* big a shock.

Whats the situation with your game, BTW, Dinesh? I presume it'll be continued next week? Whats the score at the moment, from where it will be continued next week?

Good luck to everyone tomorrow - hopefully the conditions are better! Unfortunately Ive been switched over to ump at Heritage, so I wont be able to keep an eye on some of the terrific matchups at WP tomorrow - hope the games live up to advance billing!

Sadiq bhai thanks again for your confidence in Arena. Atleast now we are playing to your expectation and not making a liar out of you
:)

Jaguars is a good batting team but I guess we were better in bowling department today.
We came with a plan and executed it. We wanted to put Jaguars in to bat and get Jaguars out as early as possible and finish the game before the skies opened and it poured.

It was nice to see you Alpesh and hopefully your teammate's prediction comes true.

Dinesh_Rovers said...

Thanks for the info Sadiq bhai..

Reg Rovers Vs Springfield, Springfield was all out for 174 in 39.4 overs. Satha was not out on 79. We bowled really well in the last 10 overs to restrict them. Satha, as usual was splendid with some fabulus shots all around the wicket.

We were 92 for no loss in 18.5 overs when rain came. So, from what we were told, we will continue the game from where left off next saturday and the winner will play the semi finals against Arena on Sunday...

Ajoy, great performance yesterday. Congratulations!!

Rajiv said...

First congrats to arena for a great win.

The way I looked at it, arena vs. Jaguars was always going to be a low scoring game... Only because both teams were better in their bowlin department. Arena with ajoy, hansraj, keshav, sagar etc and jaguars with Sikander, Raish, vishal, Satyam etc...
To add to this, the conditions were extremely good for bowling... There was swing thru out... Ajoy would agree as he was using the conditions really well.

Adding to all this, the toss became an extremely important factor. Both teams wanted to bowl first and unfortunately we lost the toss. Please don't take anything away from arena, I am not blaming the toss for our loss.

As soon as we lost the toss, we discussed as a team and knew 150-175 was a good total given the conditions and the weather. I think this was one of the best jaguars performance in the bowling department giving a great fight. Arena definately at one point were shitting bricks when the score was 55-5 and then 70-7... At this point their core batting was gone... Sagar, Samir, Keshav ...

Good luck rovers... And gudluck to everyone else for rest of the season. This was my 1st season of playing competitive cricket and I enjoyed it thoroughly... I can't wait for may2010...

I'll give a few Div 1 updates, first our QF..

Muslim Gym vs Pak Gym: Pak won by 5 wkts

Muslim won the toss, elected to bat and scored 205. Mahmood and Imran both batted pretty well and got around 50 each I think - Kami threatened for a while with a few cracking shots but got out. Wickets were pretty much shared amongst all the bowlers.
Chasing 206, Irfan and Bakhshi gave a rollicking start and put on 90 in 12 overs before both got out. The quick start released the pressure on the batsmen to follow. Irfan got 36, Bakhshi 44 and Ashar 46. We were cruising to a win when 2 wickets went down in 2 balls with 35 still to get, but Shahid was still there and he made sure there were no more hiccups with a calm 30-odd and we got home with around 8 overs and 5 wickets to spare.

Challengers vs Wildcats: Challs won

I don't know the fine details, but WC batted first and put on 186. Challengers lost a few wickets but got home pretty comfortably in the end. Someone from those teams can give more details..

Peoria vs United: Peoria won by about 60-70 runs

Peoria lost a few wickets early on (40-3), but someone scored a 90 (probably Ravi?) and they ended up with 215. United kept losing wickets at regular intervals and got all out around 140-150 I think.

and now the big upset..

Milwaukee vs Purdue:

Purdue fielded first and bundled out Milwaukee for a paltry 96. Game over right? Not so fast .. Asif Mehmood once again proved his status as the league's premier spinner by taking 7-15 and shooting down Purdue for 80-odd!!

So, next weekend its
Challengers vs Pak Gym and Peoria vs Milwaukee.

I ended up umpiring this game on Sunday, at Heritage Park. And a fantastic game it turned out to be, too - maybe the best one Ive done all year (close would be another Titans game, their match against Madison which Madison won by 1 wicket in the regular season, and played in greatly spirits.. but this was a playoff, thus more important).

The Heritage pitch was probably still a little wet from rain over the previous couple days, maybe - at any rate, the bowlers were getting help, the ball was seaming quite a bit if you hit the seam right. Titans chose to bowl first, and did a terrific job - Tafazzul got a couple of big wickets in his first spell (including Hari lbw), QC were like 5/2 to start. Alpesh came on first change, and immediately started landing almost every ball on the seam - terrific bowling, getting the ball to mostly incut, but occasionally also jag away. He bowled a 7-over spell, in which he got 4 wickets - 3 of them clean-bowled (and not just clean-bowled, but clean-bowled middle-stump all 3 times!) One was Satish (swinging across the line, lost middle-stump), then Vishnu was yorked middle-stump first ball. Suneel got a v good ball - good length, incut, he had backed away to force it away and lost middle-stump too. Then one jagged away, and got Vikram caught behind.

Meanwhile Anuj had batted well for QC Kings - was dropped 3 times early by the Titans, but played some good shots and looked a good bat before Tafazzul got him lbw in his 2nd spell. QC Kings by this time faded to 98/8 (they had come with only 10 men, so this was effectively 98/9).

Pankaj had come in a short while earlier, and was horrified (and angry) to see the last couple of wickets go down... with the last-man walking in, we were chatting at the non-strikers end, and I remember him angrily talking about how badly they were playing, and saying to me "hum har saal Chicago aakar chutiye lagte hai" :-)

The truly impressive thing, however, was that he promptly channeled that anger, and procceded to do something about it. He promptly smacked a couple of fours (and later a six), and batting with the last-man Nihar put on the best partnership of the entire innings by far. When Alpesh came back for his last over and knocked out the middle-stump again(for the 4th time!) as Pankaj swung across the line, Pankaj had top-scored with a huge 43 in the last-man's company, dragging QC Kings to 135 allout.

Unknown said...

cont'd...

The momentum of the game had swung completely - from an easy Titans win looking likely (with a below-100 score), it was now suddenly a semi-competitive 135. And it seemed larger soon enough - as an inspired starting spell from Satish and Hari reduced Titans to 6/3 in 4 overs.

From here on, Titan's 2 best bats, Tafazzul and Faraz, buckled down, changed their normal attacking game, and put on a reviving partnership. They settled the nerves and added 60 - and were at 67/3 in the last over before break, when Tafazzul's drive was very well held by Anuj at short-cover off Pankaj, for the huge breakthrough.

Post-break Faraz and Mughiz settled in, batting slowly but securely, a few runs every over. They dragged it all the way to a hundred - 100/4 in 31 overs, 36 to win off 9 overs.

QC were bowling very well though - they were tight, fielding well, and brough the field in to deny easy singles. With only 2 runs coming off the next 2 overs, Faraz tried to break the shackles and was caught, again off Pankaj - probably the final turning point of the game (Pankaj thus playing a part in all 3 turning points for QC on the day). In the next 2 overs both Mughiz and Raj also fell (Pankaj picking up his 3rd wicket), and suddenly the game swung the other way - Titans now needed 34 with only 3 wickets in hand.

Salman and Naveen fought the nerves and settled in, putting up a crucial partnership. It was 31 off 6 overs, and they eventually reduced it to 18 off 4 overs. Naveen then got a pitched-up ball - and drove, but checked his shot at the last moment (there was no need for big shots, after all).. but the checked drive ended up back with the bowler, caught and bowled. Down to 17, with 2 wickets in hand.

Salman and Schon were now together - 16 needed off 3 overs, then 10 needed off 2 overs.

Suneel was bowling brilliantly in his 2nd spell, however - and drying things up at one end. He bowled the penultimate over, and bowled a terrific one - only 2 off it, 8 to win off the last over.

The last over went to Nihar, the other hero of the vital last-wicket partnership earlier in the day . All the main bowlers were bowled out, Nihar had been keeping wickets most of the day before coming back to bowl 2 overs at the end of the innings. Schon went for it, connected once, then holed out the second time - an excellent nerveless running catch by substitute Dimpy. They had crossed, so Salman was facing - he smacked a two, it was down to 3 to win off 3 balls. A dot ball followed - 3 off 2. Salman had to swing, and he did - he missed, and Nihar hit the stumps. 133 all out, QC Kings victors by 2 runs - their first playoff win in Chicago in 4 years of trying!

An absolutely fantastic game in the end - and played in fantastic spirits throughout, both teams genuinely friendly all day, even at the tensest moments. Two genuinely sporting teams - it was the sort of game that reminds you of why you umpire in the league to start with.. to have a ring-side seat for some terrific cricket, nerve-jangling contests, and have a genuinely pleasurable time doing it. Id like to thank both teams for providing that - in the end, one of the most enjoyable cricketing days of the year.

Yes, was a little surprised to see you (ie Rovers) playing Saturday and Sunday next week... the last time this "playoff continuation" happened, the away teams chose to come back early on Sunday IIRC, start at 8am and finish the game by 10am, and then the winner stayed to play the semis with a half-hour break or so. But if both teams are willing to come Saturday and stay overnight if neccessary, its better I guess - usually not everyone is willing to do that :-)

As for Sunday - at the moment, according to the TV guys, the rain is mostly supposed to hold off.. but the high temperature for the day is supposed to be 47 degrees, and windy! The low is in the low-30s.. when we get to the ground at 9:30 am, Iam guessing it'll be close to 40 degree weather, windchill about freezing-point :-) Come prepared (even last week I started the game umpiring in 4-layers of clothing - maybe this week it oughta be 5 ;-)

Hey, I havent given up hope of an Indian summer yet - hopefully soon after this freezing weekend :-)

It all comes down to luck after a certain point in October, really - its a total crapshoot. Last year we had freezing days for the QFs IIRC - like 50s and biting wind, very uncomfortable. But then we got mightily lucky for the finals - the Div1 and Div2 finals day was a high of almost 80, in the middle of October!

Given what we're going to get this weekend, we can only hope for similar luck for the finals :-) This weekend sounds quite awful - Saturday might at least be high 50s and sunny now, but Saturday is still looking like windy and high 40s.. which could be really miserable.

Some thoughts on improvements for the next season ---

1. Team need to enter the scores for all of their games to be considered for playoffs. Div 1 does not have this issue, but Div 2 has this issue a lot. If a team in the top 8 has not entered scores for all of their games, the next team in the remaining list having entered all the 14 games gets a chance to play for playoffs.

2. The deadline for entering scores should be extended upto friday of the week following the weekend when match was played. Any teams failing to meet this deadline should be penalised by -1 points in their points tally. So if a team has 12 points, and fails to meet the deadline for their next match, if they lose, their points tally will fall to 11, and if they win their points tally will be 15 and not 16.
Also if a team fails to enter the scores at the end of the season, they start with -ve points in the next season.

3. I suspect next yr, the number of Div 2 teams may fall to 10-12. In that case, if all teams play each other, the regular season and Div 2 play offs can end early. In that case, let us try to bring back the earlier rule to make Div 2 semi-finalists team play in the Div 1 playoffs. This may act as an incentive for relegated Div 1 teams to consider playing for Div 2. This is if Madhu's merger idea is not acted upon.

Your feedbacks??

Good observations.......

Scores are not getting updated in time by a lot of teams in both Div I and II over a number of years ... especially those that lose..... this leaves a bitter taste with all cricket fans who eagerly look forward to the results in detail as early as Saturday/ Sunday evenings..... This can be resolved by asking the umpire to keep track of the score and also update the website with weekly result and scorecard on time..... reducing points is not fair to the teams..... We must have 2 neutral umpires for each game and that will help in a lot of controversies....

Shiva Sir ..

Not entering the scores causes a lot of trouble towards the end of the season .. Playoff spots, NRR -- hence, deducting a point for this delay should push the teams to enter the scores within the deadline and it seems reasonable to me.

Anyways .. any word on todays matches ??

Wow feels like I died and gone to heaven. QC Kings beating giants in a shocking way. I was speaking with Ali Bacha this afternoon and just could not believe. QC scored 165 all out and in reply Giants were 60 for 1 and then reached 100+ for 3 and well on its way to Finals. This is where clock struck midnight and Cinderella run came to a screeching halt. Giants lost 6 wickets for 8 runs and finished the game at 151 for 9 wickets with 4 overs left and 15 runs to go.

Tough Tough Tough loss but congrats to QC Kings.

Unfortunately Amer Khan the Captain of Giants had to leave mid game to catch his flight to Pakistan so he could not bat or this could have been different ending as he usually delivers with his bat in pressure situation like this. Good Luck to the finalist.

Congrats to QC Kings ...

Giants did go in as favourites in this match for me as they had always beaten QC Kings comprehensively in play-offs in the past years ...
Tough Luck Giants ...

Looks like for the first time in recent years ... out of Chicago teams will be involved as both the finalists ..
