After many long weeks full of blood, sweat, toil, and competitive cricket we are at last at the culmination of the 2008 season. Many teams played well, some did better than expected, others tripped up near the end, some did not perform to expectations. But in the end, there can be only 2 teams from each Division that play in the finals. This year the two teams to outlast all others in the 30/30 Division are DeePark XI and MWCA, in Division 2 are AAA and IIT, and in Division 1 are United and Phoenix. Whatever the outcome of the games this Saturday, all these teams can be rest assured that they have had an outstanding season and have done well to reach their respective finals.
The 30/30 Division final should be an interesting match up between an explosive and experienced DeePark side and a young and talented MWCA side. DeePark rode on the back Bhavesh Amin's 4 wickets, Chirag Patel's 3 wickets, and Nirav Patel's 71 to storm through to the finals. MWCA relied upon Nasir Mahmood and Moin Babar's 3 wickets and an aggressive knock from Fahad Babar who put up 54 to out hustle their opponents. Will the exuberance of youth outlast the wisdom of experience in this final?
The Division 2 final looks to be an extremely good game between two evenly poised teams. IIT stormed into the finals on the back of Lakshmikumar Rajaramachandran's century and 3 wicket haul. AAA outplayed the regular season Division winners Eagles (who have already secured their Div 1 spot) due to good knocks from Sabbir Patel (66) and Asif Patel (42). Bilal Patel and Ibrahim Ismail picked up 3 wickets apiece in the big win. AAA recently got promoted to Division 1 a couple of years ago and then were relegated back to Division 2 last year. They clearly are one of the best teams in Division 2 and are looking to reclaim their berth in Division 1. IIT has been a perennial contender in Division 2 having lost out in the finals last year. They are a well-balanced team with strong batting and bowling line-ups. Both teams are very good in the field and this is going to be an evenly matched contest. Can a determined IIT side get past an evenly balanced AAA side, or will AAA make it back to Division 1?
The Division 1 final has shaped up to be a contest between a team that most people considered favourites - United - and a team that few considered even a dark horse - Phoenix. On one hand United is a team that has looked very strong all year. They made it to the finals by beating favourites Pak Gym due to a dogged 78 by Kiran Kumar and superb bowling by one of the leagues best players Mehul Shani (5 wickets). United boasts the leagues best batsman for 2008 - Faisal Baig, the leagues top bowler Mehul Shani who is a very good batsman in his own right, the wiles of Amit Joshi, the talent of Kiran Kumar, the experience of Adnan Baig, the explosiveness of Guarav Dhar, not to mention the less heralded by equally effective Naveed Mohammed, Dhiraj Pathkar, Mateen Syed, Gopinath Aravindakshan, and Sudhir Kumar. Phoenix on the other hand started the season on a dream run, then tripped up in the middle, and then came back strong towards the end and in the playoffs. Prasanna Sundaragopalan ripped through the Peoria line up with 4 wickets and then the chase was completed due to the contributions of Aditya Burman (34), Arvind Sundaragopalan (44), Diwakar Cherukumilli (29), and Mitul Patel (25). Few gave Phoenix a chance at the playoffs, and less gave them a chance at going deep - let alone making the finals. But here they are facing a United team that are clear favourites and determined to avenge their past final's losses and raise the championship for the first time. Either way, there will be a new winner in Division 1 this year. Will the dream run of the upstart Phoenix team continue, or will United finally end their Championship jinx in 2008?
This Saturday is the culmination, the answer, the reason that we play cricket in the Midwest Cricket Conference - the Division finals. Good luck to all teams!!

Nice article Adi!!!!!
This Blog is dead..man..dead.. The finals is Tomorrow and no one is interested to talk about it.
I hope the teams in the finals are interested or it will set up for another unanswered question??..Why every year the finals are getting less and less support from the players..
We spend more time watching international stars..whether it be our own or others and can't spend a couple hours watching the people we play with, cheering them on for their achievements..
why is this???...We have a marketing Dept.. Should'nt this be a huge part of their responsibilities.. getting players out to watch the finals at least???
Yo..Rup..
very busy day bud....will keep checking the blog ...
My picks for tomorrow..
Div 1
Big upset By Phoenix - yeah, you heard it...Phoenix beats United by 15 runs..would be a cracker of a game..
Div2
IIT will beat AAA.
later
Hear ya Shekhs...
You're gambling big on upset.. I don't know man.. the weather looks good.. a little warm..which will make the ground faster and this i feel will benifit UCC..
Earlier i was hanging towards phoenix..Now am undecided..???
IIT definitely has the edge as the have been a more consistent team that AAA so i am going with you on this one...IIT will win the cup for the first time!!!!
I see that United-Phoenix have clashed twice in Div 1 so far with an even record 1-1 .. Phoenix won against them last year because of Adi's 90 .. If Phoenix has to win against United ... they need someone to score big rather than 30-40s ...
Both the teams are good chasers is apparent from the semis ..
But above all this .. United will win the championship tomorrow ...
Fellas,
I'll try my best to make it over there tomorrow...
Its my son's b'day, so have stuff planned for him....
I'll try to see if I can stop for a coupla hours towards the end of the game...
win or lose....Rohit help me out here..
Shukhs....Shekhs will be MIA at the finals...
Hope you have fun and make it for at least a copla hrs....
I am hoping we have a good crowd??
Thanks Rup. Sadiq was supposed to write the articles. I think those would have been much more informative. But I think something had to be put in place, and so I did the best I could.
Shekhs, Nice....how old is your son?
IIT over AAA , might give AAA the edge here its just my opinion..... Lakshmi is in some form both with bat and ball, in QF and SF put together he has 8 wickets, both match winning performances , should be interesting.....
I might drop by tomorrow noon sometime to check out the scores, lets see.....
Unites Vs Phx , well here United is the favourite but cant or wont take anything away from Phx, wont be surprised if they spring some surprise, but currently United are favorites I think.....
Good Luck Adi for tomorrow....
Yeah Rup Ponting was unlucky and Day 2 Ishant bowled without luck to Hussey, I thought he did a great job, he also started bowling off cutters fetched him couple of wickets .... Lets see how India responds today, this will be crucial, Australia sure cannot loose unless India puts takes 150-200 runs lead, Day 4 and Day 5 this wickets is going to turn ....
"India puts takes" = India Takes (mistake).....
Preetam, Ram, Shabari (although he is a room away still dunno where he is ) where are you guys ......
Rohit,
he will turn 5 morrow..
Shekhs,
Happy Birthday to your son.
thanks Adi..!
good luck morrow..
good luck mehul..
good luck AAAand IIT..
Say happy B-Day to the kid for me..
Have a few cold ones and enjoy the day...
We will see ya soon.
Shekhs bhai .. is your son Amitabh Bachhan in making ?? He shares his bday with Big B ...
Any updates on the finals results ???
AAA def IIT by 25 runs, IIT were looking to chase down 180, they were 82/1 in 20 overs.
United Def Pheonix, last wicket stand for united being 45 runs, Dr.Naveed played well....
Aurora 20/20 final tonight in Hanover Park if anyone is interested to watch - between Div 1 champs United and Tigers.
Dee Park beat MWCA
dee park scores 191
MWCA all out for 150 odd runs..
Congrats to dee park 3030 champs
Congratulations to United on conquering the Final Frontier...

helloooo guys.... whats going on????
no kiddin.
I posted a comment like 10 years ago..and I didnt get any response to that..
rohit..give some details from the finals..
I went there 15 overs after lunch...
IIT Vs AAA - 20 over mark IIT were 83/1 , couple of overs after drinks Vasu got out at a score fo 92/2, IIT were still in a comfortable position with LakshmiKumar in the center , Sahil, Chakri to come, 2 overs later Lakhsmi was out caught in the gully that got them to 98/3, the next over Sahil got out, half hearted hit to mid off, then Chakri and Vamsi played around a bit before Bilal got Vamsi, Deepak and atlast going through the defenses of Chakri, that got the equation to 71 in 66 balls 4 wickets remaining, Sukush came in and threw took some calculate risk and got the equation to 40 runs in 5 overs. Rafiq got in and took 2 wickets and reduced them to 8 down before Vijay came in threw his bat and got couple of hits to the boundary reducing the equation to 26 runs of 3 overs, again Bilal got in got Vijay out caught in deep midwicket and finished IIT innings for 155.
Phx Vs United - Couldnt really get a glimpse of this game, but Faisal was caught brilliantly at the long on boundary in Shiv's bowling, I returned back to Div 1 after the IIT game and the req runs = 40 with plenty of overs remaining and 1 wicket in hand, Dr.Naveed and Dhiraj Patkar were batting, Dr.Naveed was kind of shielding Dhiraj, he didnot take easy singles in between and Dhiraj last ball of every over ensured he defended the ball, then slowly Dr.Naveed started giving Dhiraj some strike when Dhiraj Hit a 6 and a 4 in one over bringing the equation to something like 17runs of 6 overs,Phx too made it easy for UCC by bowling wides, then Dr.Naveed got a boundary getting the equation to something like 8 runs of 4 overs, with singles they both got the equation to 3 runs of 3 overs. Then there was anti-climax, wide + 2 runs ensured UCC their title.
Something I noticed from outside was Phx spinners(dont remember their names, one was off spin and other leg spin) were doing decent job but did not really vary their pace, both batsmen got too comfortable ,slowly getting used to them, they really did not hurry the batsmen into their shots.....
That was me at the Finals ....
wow..looks like phoenix threw away a championship..
but again...United deserves it more than anybody else...and kudos to doc for pulling off an incredible victory from the jaws of defeat..
How ya al do'n???????.
Shekhs,
We need to get together for a few cold ones, one a dis day!!!
Yep we can say Harry Potter left the Phoenix towards the end whilst UCC invoked Voldemort to pull off a well deserved Victory. I think most people at the ground that day were Happy for UCC as the finally won it.
Phoenix can tap themselves on the shoulder and say "Well done boys, the season was a great success".
On Rohit Take...
I Feel phoenix pushed the spin too much at the end. From what I saw outside there was nothing fancy/good from the spinners. The 17 run over realy was the back breaker for Phoenix.
all it takes is for a bat to get a hold of a spinner and BOOMMMM!!! your are 20 runs down the drain.
I feel with one wicket to go they should have shoved the pace down Doc and Deeraj throat. Both bats were a little nervous and the runs could have dried up increasing the runs per over needed. Your chances of getting the wicket now becomes greater even with the spin?.
My take and i am sticking to it.
yeah Rup..we definitely should get togetha..
how bout this weekend?
anybody else in?
Not this one man..
got some finishing touches to do at home..
Next week end is fine by me??
sure..
lets target next weekend..
Hi guys,
Not hibernating. Promise. Nor am I sulking. New job and no internet so i could not get on the blog. Congratulations United, AAA and Deepark. I heard div 1 was a close game. Hardluck Adi.
Rohit how are ya ?
Shekhs, howz your arm ?
Rup, how is your leg ?
Congrats to United, AAA and Deepark for winning the finals.
Phoneix, IIT and MWCC - you guys played hard and be proud of your accomplishments. Without you, there wouldn't be a thrilling finals.
Shekhs, how is your arm?
its getting better..
howya doin?
whats the deal with jayasuriya picking a fight with the tamils?
Do'n just great Satha...
Nice to see you on the Blog...
The Leg is just fine these days..Since then injury last week in August..i have not played any cricket so it go good healing time..in fact i got to start some keep fit regiments..very lousy at that I must say.
I am going to work on putting on the beer belly for the winter..Watching football and winter sports does wonder for this::::))))))IMHO!!!
lol Rup...
hey, lets catch a bears game sometime..
everybody is welcome..please drop a line to shekhs.aravind@gmail.com in case you want to do it..
if its just the few us..we can have it at my place or buchia's place..
that way, we will have the rest of the gang...
What do you tihnk Fellas...?
The second test Aus V. India?
I pick India for this (surprise..)..
I think India is going to pull this one out...especially since they miss Clark.
India might benefit from missing Kumble..in case he misses...
we might play chawla..and that might work for us..better..
Chawla is not in the team ... Amit Mishra is ... I see more chances of Patel playing ... Munaf Patel ...
Hey Preetam, Long time man.....
Shekhs depends on the Mohali wicket, might help batsmen later on ie;4th and 5th day ..... so lets see, man Australia are surely missing the services of Shane Warne its so evident....
And about the Bears game trying to come out of the shell after the last 11 sec Disaster we had, so for few days, I will be a silent reader wrt Bears, while I still am trying to learn more about this game .....
hey preetam...how are you bud..
congrats on your new job..
yeah rohit, aus definitely misses warne..
but appu you're right..I forgot that we dont have chawla...
we'll have to wait and see..
Shekhs,
I'm doing good.
Jayasuriya is one the greatest cricket player I've seen but his gesture towards the spectators is uncalled for. Any palyer of his calibre, should refrain from disreputing himself. As you know, the Tamils in Toronto were protesting against the SL team for obvious reasons and the protest was not meant at any particular players. As far as I know, Tamils have always respected Jayasuriya and I don't know what had provoked him to do such a unprofessional behavior.
OBTW, my cousins had met a bunch of SL players at the nets last Thursday. They have some photos and if you're interested, I'll ask them to send it to me.
Rup, how u doin?
yeah, I hear ya...that was totally an unprofessional behavior from Jayasuriya..oh well..
that would be cool...send me some pics..
howz the party scene in SPI, when your cousins were over..?
damn i am gonna miss cricket in the winter.
see you guys next year.........
Shekhs,
I will send the pics to you once I get it.
My cousins (7 of them) were here last weekend and the night life is pretty dry in SPI nowadays, nothing like what it used to be. Loads of buffalos.....:-)
lol..buffalos satha...
all fine Satha....
Next time you come Chi town way let me know.. maybe You, Shekhs and I can hang out????.
Buffalos...good one..
Maybe you can get Palin and her Ex-brother-in Law to come a camp'n your way..SPI that is...She will get rid of them Buffalos and any loose Moose..LOL.. leaving just the things that look good..and the night life all good again..
Yes Rup, we should hang out when I come to Chicago next time.
I'd like to patry with Palin...she ain't that bad......:-)
yeah, Palin can be our cheerleader...
I dont mind partying with her...
Yeh..cheerleader..sounds good..but arn't cheerleaders suppose to let it all out???
So, it can be safe to say she let the Mooses have it so she can be/remain the hot thing around..
On cricket..Nice to see Sachin take the record...
88 186 111 10 0 79.27
Looks like he was on fire..point to prove..
How about old boy Gangu..man he always stick it to those who call him old and out everytime..Remeber SA???
no kiddin Rup...
both Sachin and Ganguly took it out on their critics..
sachin apparently was on a song...could've made a huge impact if he could've stuck around for another coupla more overs..
yeah sachin and ganguly played well, so did dhoni but needless shot from ganguly and some stupid cricket from dhoni at the end.....
Eyyy anybody there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cmon guys!
bored outta my mind over here
wassapening all.....
Kinda dead, eh? It's been tough to look at anything cricket related (except cricinfo). Let the healing begin......
So, how is everyone doing? What plans for a night of drinking and debauchery?
Adi ..
Why the home page of MCC website is not updated with the finals synopsis ?? Check with Shiva abt it ...
yo..
what up fellas...
its totally dead in here huh...
yeah i know, whats up witheveryone ?
hear ya guys...
sorry folks.. been a rough lat 2 weeks..3 Deaths in the family circle.
Any upcoming winter cricket event in Chi town?
sorry to hear about the deaths Rup, hope everybody gets the strength to bear the losses...
God bless you folks!!
Mehul was talking about something the other day..
Mehul, any plans so far ?
We all hope for the upcoming holiday season to be bliss..no more worries..although i got the economy/investments on the back burner and it's getting hot my friends...
Mehul.. what ya wok'n n man??
do tell...do tell...
Lets talk some Int Cricket...
Do you think the Aussies are folding a bit now..
looks like there is some infighting after the last whallop they got from India..
first Symonds..now Lee has issues..who is next...
Seems like India is the only team that rattles up the Aussies..not to mention gav em a run for their monies..in recent even take their monies???
Wa ya al tink!!!!!!
I agree with you..it seems like the India series exposed the aussies..in terms of their chemistry and team effort..
we'll have to wait on drwaing conclusions on India yet, as they do have a habit of throwing it all away when they have it all..
I heard West Indies is planning to play in the Emirates...with Pak..
Hear ya Shekhs...
As of late the Aussies have been loosing their cool a little..can it be because they are not that strong anymore..
It can be safe to say the are now on the level of the other good teams so this should be great for cricket.
Well india..??? lets see if they build on this or prove your theory true??
Yep it will be nice if Pak agrees to the proposal as they need some cricket badly..then again the already have an obstacle.. Money???. fighting as to who will get what??
Did anybody check the Lahore/Mumbai .. ICL match today ?? Lahore was 59/2 in 2.5 overs I suppose ... Kasprowicz went for 30 runs in 2nd over ... Imran Nazir was awesome ...
