Nice Article. Thanks for getting this thread started, as I'm sure there will be a lot of comments on it.
Imran's exclusion is a disappointment for sure. And everyone will at some point question the makeup and procedures of the selection committee! But how would you change it? Should it be the President and Vice-President making the selections? Should there be others? How many? Is there a better system / suggestion someone would like to throw out than the current practice of the MWCC?
Tango.. I agree that Imran Syed should have been on the plane to LA.
I like the idea of having a bunch of selectors(not from management) and let them select the team.
Who will create the selection commitee?
I personally believe in performance rather than reputation. Top 15 is one tool that should be used to pick the team.

how about a teak like this?
Sohail Alvi -
Shahid Munir -
Satha Sivapragasam
Maninder Bola
Afroze Siddiqui - replaced with pradeep
Amit Kumar - replaced with imran syed
Asif Mahmood
Raheel Akhter - replaced with jack
Imran Taylor - replaced with suresh
Nilesh Patel
Nasir Mehmood - replaced with sanjay
Madhu Reddy
Dakshesh Patel
ideal situation addi would have spoke to TA and asked for list of players considered. he would know TA doesnt have the smartness to pick Imran. addi would have picked up imran and imran would score heavily in la. very sad to see imran lose oportunity :(((((
=============================
Mehul did contact Tariq and asked for the list. Never got a reply. It's a catch 22. If I had tried to approach him beofre MWCC, I would have been labeled as someone who is trying to undermine the efforts. I am still trying to get him. We will know for sure by Saturday when we play against Muslim Gym.

Who would you replace on the list and with whom? Remember, they fill specific roles, so be careful.
Here's who I'd replace
Sanjay Patel - Raheel
Priyank - Nasir
Pradeep - Afroze
Imran Syed - Amit
Mahesh - Imran Taylor
Jack's been in bad form this year, so I'd still take Madhu ahead of him. But he's a baller none the less.

---------------------------------
Not in your dreams Jaggi, unless we change management.
The contacted Teshin and you all call Rup Old.
Any day he is still better than most of the pace bowlers on this LA squad. and we all know he can bat. poor Jack, he needs to do a M/Jackson makeover and maybe then MWCC will select him.
Or a Racist suite against this mgt may change they way we look at players.
Tariq needs to stay in PA permanently as when the finacials do come out he will go to jail. Sohail, be carefull or you will be his cell mate. I don't know why Humayun is risking his career with these guys.
We will never see changes if Either this Mgt or Addi wins.
Rup has proposed running for president with very good ideas but you all will never vote him in cause he is still a Banda in your eyes. That is why I feel he will end up not running.
I feel Sorry for Rup and ICC for MWCC will never let them win anything or represent MWCC. Umpires took them out of the finals last year and is killing them again this year. 3 LBW's last week all questionable.
Rup you guys need to come out of the sportsman/good guys attitude and do a Farhat on these umpires.
the selection committee will be chosen by the management. There are individuals who are very knowledgeable about the game and our league and will pick people based on merit.
Although numbers are important, I dont think it gives the entire picture. Numbers alone would get someone like Madhu in the team ( he is now coming down the order and hence not on the top 15).
"Good will prevali"...well said. Good is something of the past and the truth is always brushed away, but reality never leaves....my broda.
Jaggi, (and everyone else)
Your suggestion is a good one. Have a bunch of selectors not in management so as to try and take the politics out of the equation (if there is any).
However, a couple of further questions. How many selectors? Who picks the selectors? Are there any restrictions on selectors? What is a selector should, or is in contention for a spot to the MWCC team? Should be there be some form of tryouts? Maybe use the Night tournament as a selection tool? What about using other tools such as reputation (career numbers), potential, current form (season numbers), etc?
I want to get some detailed ideas from everyone, because if we want a change, we must have an alternate solution in mind that people can subscribe to. After that, we can only hope that the Mgmt team, whoever that may be, is receptive to these new ideas! But step 1 first.....
What is a selector should => What if a selector should
Should be there be => Should there be
Well said Dr. Booo...reality will never leave and you should teach your mates how to be unsportsman like B(r)oood(hhh)a :)
the selection committee will be chosen by the management.
---------------------------
...Then might as well not have a selection commitee.
I was looking for something like 'Selection Committee will be chosen by the board of directors, who are elected by the team members for two years.'
Adnan Baig
United Cricket Club
The Selectors or the committee should be selected by Team caps and Elite Umpiring panel. A group independent of the management.
They should meet right after the AGM, dont have to physically be present.
They can use Technology and do a web meeting, goto meeting something like that.
But I think the Team caps can form a selection comittee that will be responsible for selecting teams for regionals, LA Open or any tourney...
my $0.02
Isn't Rup of Indian origin? So the question of race can be thrown out of the window. Racism is not the right word, maybe xenophobia.
Either way, I don't think race or someones origin has anything to do with selection, its more about favoritism shown by management to their own teammates and chamcha's. (stooges)
With regards to the elections, if Indian teams can vote for a Pakistani President, and vice-versa, then I'm sure they won't mind voting for a West Indian President either.
But I think the Team caps can form a selection comittee that will be responsible for selecting teams for regionals, LA Open or any tourney...
============================
This could lead to favorable treatment for some. Everyone will be fighting to get thier 'Banda' in.
Adnan Baig

You mean fav. treatment from the selection committee?
I dont think so..if we can form a balanced committee, I dont think we'll have a bias issue..
I said that the teams caps along with others can form the committee not select the team..
I'm signing out right now..so will be back for the discussions later..
peace out.
Sorry! the wording was such that I though you wanted the team caps to be the selectors. Let me pull a Bush on you 'My Bad.'

guys,
we are just wasting time here. its not like TA going to change anything. also we know TA doesnt pick up the team, sohail does. we should get rid of him first.
anyone want to move no confidence motion against sohail?
Adnan,
Your point of selecting the committee that selects the team is fair. Shekh's suggestion (vote for the selection committee members) probably is on the lines you were thinking. Problem I see is that it bring back politics into it!
What about non-playing Umpires and other impartial folk to form the selection committee? What about using the Night tourney and "try-outs" to pick a squad of 24 (2 teams of 12), and then fine tune it to a squad of 14 or 15 or whatever?
I'll check in later to see what people think. I'm out too!
NW, Tango's definitely got you for competition for MVB this year!

Imran Syed - Amit
------
This is the second or third time Ive seen the suggestion that Amit is a bad pick... and I must disagree.
First of all, let me agree about Imran - I would have definitely had him in my side to LA, one of the first people there IMHO. In the end he was the highest rungetter in the entire league last season, and he is a clean and big hitter of the ball, probably, as Jaggi says, one of the cleanest hitters in our league (ie he is suited to 20/20, its not like he makes his runs batting very slowly or something). I will confess to being very very surprised he isnt there, I was very sure he was going to be.
But it isnt an either/or with him and Amit IMHO. Amit came to our league only last year, and didnt play all the games (and so didnt make the Top Fifteen in runs I think). I cant at the moment access the stats for some reason (is the website down?)... but I do seem to recall Amit playing about 9 games last year, and ending up 2nd or 3rd in the batting averages for the season. He had a *very* good year last year. This season he has continued that - he *is* in the Top Fifteen in runs currently I believe (again, cant access the stats). He got a 60+ against Challengers, and another 60-odd this week against United IIRC. In his short time in our league, he has clearly put up the numbers to be considered strongly for this team. And he is a pretty young guy, runs well, bowls a little bit etc too. He hasnt played the Abid Laheri tournament because he is in St Louis - he shouldnt be penalized for that by not being picked, however. Nor can you penalize him for just playing on home pitches - if that was the case, youd have to penalize all away teams and players, which isnt fair to anyone (Satha has made all his runs at home, Asif has taken all his wickets at home - they are still 2 of the best players we have however, and obvious picks for the side).
c8w
When did I say Amit is a bad pick? I just said that there are more deserving batsman than Amit. I said, Nasir, Raheel and Imran are BAD PICKS, the rest are acceptable. Don't read between the lines Sadiq.
And Amit's average, like Satha's average, is inflated, since they both play on batting friendly surfaces.
I disagree with Sadiq. Amit is an excellent 50 over batsman, but not suitable for 20/20 game. He is the type of batsman who likes to settle down before playing big shots. Imran can act from the word 'Go'.

Rup you guys need to come out of the sportsman/good guys attitude and do a Farhat on these umpires.
-------
Hey, one can disagree with ideas without being racist :-) I think Rup did have some good ideas that I agree with, but he also had other ideas that I personally disagree with completely. But then we have different opinions - Iam a bit old-fashioned in that sense, I *like* white clothes, red ball, I think thats real cricket and dont want to go to colored clothes for regular season as he does, for example. I dont want shorter games or a shorter season - I want 45 overs for Div1, and maybe even 15-16 games if thats what it takes to play everyone in your division (I dont like the idea of not playing anyone in your own division). These are just differences of opinion, really, no more than that.
And I'll disagree with your statement about umpiring too :-) Sridhar umpired the AAA-ICC game last year - he is one of the organizers of umpiring, he does the training of umpires. He is hardly biased one way or the other IMHO. Maybe he made a mistake, I dont even know if he did - but he was surely not biased in any way. You cant really blame umpires for losses IMHO - I dont know about last week for example, I wasnt there and dont remember who was umpiring, but the opposition did put up 250 in 40 overs, no? Those things arent the umpires fault. Anyone may have made mistakes, but one shouldnt allege racism or a conspiracy against a team for that reason, thats not very fair. ICC is a very good team and a fun team, but theyre not playing great this year so far - and having too much fun may have something to do with it :-) (I umpired you guys only once this year, in Madison... and surely the fact that everyone was partying a lot of the previous night had *something* to do with the fact that you guys were 75 allout, no? I dont know if you did that sort of thing last year as much! But thats ICC for you - having fun has always been very important to the team, and thats a very good thing IMHO).
And as for doing a Farhat... I like Rup and admire his cricket, but please dont, at least not when Iam umpiring :-)
c8w
cricketwallah,
why dont you put forward your hypothetical team given that some of the peoele are not avail.

addy, i must disagree with you for once. :)) and also i'm not speaking for amit either. but lets take his case. how do you know his style doesnt suit 20/20. you have seen him in 45 over format and i'm sure he is batting accordingly.
why on the earth anyone should hit everyball from ball one in 45 over game?
--------
And Amit's average, like Satha's average, is inflated, since they both play on batting friendly surfaces.
--------
See, Satha plays on basically a tarred-road-type surface covered with matting. It is really not very different from Washington Park at all, only marginally if anything - maybe a bit more even, fewer bad bounces, but similar-style pace and bounce. And that surface is, IMHO, far *less* friendly for batting than a place like Hanover Park (where many Chicago players get to play much more than Satha does). To say his record is inflated is thus IMHO very unfair.
What Satha does play on is a ground where the outfield this year is lightning fast. But that is this year - its not *always* the case! (Last time I went to Springfield was 2 years ago, and the outfield that year was not particularly fast at all - it has a lot to do with amount of rainfall early in summer etc obviously). And, really, WP has a lightning fast outfield this year too (the Phoenix/United game 2 weeks ago was played on one of hte fastest outfields Ive seen at WP - it hadnt rained in a while when that game was played).
BTW, if we're talking surfaces being friendly and unfriendly... how many times has 200 been scored in Lincoln Park in Milwaukee this season? Or last season? Over 2 seasons, maybe like 2-3 times? Now *thats* a surface that can be considered very difficult for batsmen and generally low-scoring, right? And Romesh Kadlec has played all his games on it this year, and is currently #2 in runs in our league despite that? Yet the only person who even thought he should be a contender for the past month was me, I think :-)

This becomes a process handled by the Board of directors. This is where the problem is. We must have a structure that distributes power. Right now the way it is setup you can't even take a leak without getting an OK from 'Bada Saheb'. We eliminate centralized power, the rest will follow. The way I look at it, it is our league, we are the patrons and we should have a say so. If majority wants to play with a $20 Kookabura, management should not be dictating their terms. I am sure if you talk to the management they will tell you that there is a selection comittee in place, but again who has the final say in approving these players?

--------------------------
You took a leak, infact sevral leaks without permission and every time you pretty much pissed on MWCC players.
You had a chance with the LA open to show you care about MWCC but you picked a team from Pengiun land and your buddys.
Are you any better that this current bunch of pricks.
"DON'T EVEN USE THE BALONEY PHRASE AGAIN OF WAITING TO SEE WHAT mwcc WILL DO CAUSE YOU NEVER INTENDED TO????"
BTW, nobody has really mentioned it so far... but the biggest problem I forsee for this squad in LA is the lack of spinners. The last year or two, it was spinners who played the biggest role in LA - they were the most effective bowlers on every team given the surfaces provided. Even international level pacemen went for runs sometimes, more than the spinners did. Our own most economical bowler of the tournament by a mile, IIRC, was Subba Vadlamani of St Louis.
In this team, there is really only Asif who is a full-time spinner, and maybe Amit and Afroze and Maninder who do it part-time. It is probably not a coincidence that both Bhavneet and Tehsin were asked, given the need for spinners on these surfaces - even 3 or 4 may not have been excessive in the squad.
This is also, however, probably a weak-spot in our league - which quality spinners would one pick for the squad, apart from Asif? I probably rate Samarth high amongst the rest, but he is already in the United squad (Tehsin and Bhavneet are already unavailable). Who else could have been good enough to bowl spin at the very high level we'll see in LA? Narpreet, Shiv etc are good, but are all older with some fielding liabilities. I have a lot of time for Khadry of Advancers, but his numbers in Division Two havent been very strong the last couple of years - at least not enough to make him an obvious pick. Can anyone think of any true standouts who could have been picked in this department?

Yes, I agree, Simran from Purdue is very good... and probably the type of guy who we should consider for LA, young, fit, fields very well, bats very well if somewhat steadily (a century and couple fifties in limited games last year IIRC), very controlled spin bowler etc. However, Simran is not playing in our league now - he hasnt played a single game for Purdue this year, is off in India for summer I hear (he is like an undergrad or something), and is probably unlikely to join Purdue all season from what I was told. Else he would have been a very good choice, I agree.

I heard that there is a one very good right arm leg spinner from Cedar Rapids who play Iowa league. If it doesn't hurt may be when planning for big events like this try to pull in as much talent possible from other leagues within midwest. My 2 cents.

Signing off. Have a nice 2007 journey.
And Sadiq,
even though Satha plays on a 'batter friendly' surface, he's still a stand out performer. Similarly, Asif is a stand out performer, even though he plays most of games on a spinner friendly track.
Can't say the same about Amit. No doubt he's a good cricketer, but as I mentioned, there were others who should have been selected ahead of him. He was given preference only because Sohail was the selector.
This is what you said earlier: First of all, let me agree about Imran - I would have definitely had him in my side to LA, one of the first people there IMHO
If you agree that Imran should be on the squad, then which batsman would you drop in his place? The only 'weak link' on the batting end seems to be Amit. So before you around writing essays as to why we shouldn't criticize Amit's selection, maybe you should put forth the candidate who you think should be dropped. Otherwise, don't go around claiming that you would have had Imran on your side going to LA, cos we aren't flying 50 players there.
How many bandwagons are you going to keep jumping on and off of everyday?
Dr. B..that is not a nice way to leave without telling everyone what happened with you. Dr. Boooo....
I agree with most of the suggestions made by our esteemed bloggers regarding the team.
All the players that are selected are from DIV 1 except Bola and Madew..is this not baised.
Suresh Paul is a good bat so is Hari from QC Kings. Both have been in top 15 last year as well this year.
Guys who played against them can comment more.
Perrin Doinke from Evanston is a good bowler.
Unless u have a process in place how will anyone know how team is selected.
Play DIV I you have more chances :))
Just my 2 cents...
If some one is performing consitently he should be given an oppurtunity.
If you are playing down the order it your problem....numbers should talk as well past performancing need to be considered.

Actually I just cut-n-pasted from the official squad listing, and didnt bother to change anything (didnt realize till after posting that Imran had been listed under Lucky). Imran used to be with Lucky 2 years ago, but has been playing with AAA last year and this year, and so is now in Div1. He was first picked when a member of Lucky, and probably when the squad has been adjusted since every year and he's been there, his "team" hasnt been adjusted by oversight. (This was pointed out to me via email by AAA as well... but, as I told them, I just cut-n-pasted for the blog article, I cant change anything on the official website).

If I could, sure I would :-) Id even take you to provide running commentary if I could, Tango (and Romeen, so he could lose bets and buy everyone drinks ;-)
Seriously, FWIW, Ive said for a long time now that IMHO Mahesh is the best bat/keeper that we have, for 20/20 type games especially (well, ok, long time = this year; before that I always picked Todd as the best keeper/bat in the league, but he isnt playing in our league anymore). So, if it came down to the crunch, that would probably be my personal pick :-)
Beyond that...I think one of the better bat/keepers in the league is actually Ashwin from Purdue (who almost nobody has mentioned, of course :-) Then there's Sharath from MUCC, Imran from AAA etc. This is all if youre going to go with the younger guys for fitness, future exposure etc too... if age is irrelevant then there is someone like Anand of Royals, who is a good gloveman and an excellent strokeplayer (even though IMHO he has never done justice to his ability in our league - his highest score might well have been the brilliant 44 or so he made when I umpired Royals a couple weeks ago).
There is also a suggestion, of course, that Satha and Sohail both keep, and could do the job for 20 overs in a pinch, and then that would leave room for a fulltime batsman or bowler in the squad. I dont agree with that idea myself, but Ive heard it suggested a few times.
c8w
Who is this Guess guy?
I think he is stupid or just doesn't like challengers, other wise he will not give this senseless statement regarding challenger'sability. I like Pak and Challengers both as a warriors, you can not say until last delivery. I think guess is just stupid as regular comentatior, just wanted to give statement to stay in lime light, It will be the best fight until last ball for this GAME.
Cricketwallah, U are the best keeper if youcan keep pressure on batsman, this is mind game rather than physical, Ashwin is good keeper too, but don't forget that Mahesh has an edge of every keeper due to the level of cricket he has played. Nothing against your openion, but this info is also handy, and good commentator always have all info ready prior to give any comments.
Adnan you don't have any right to say anything against Executives, suddenly you start seeing many deffects in every move, when were you before? just because you lost bid to president, you don't like anything that midwest does.
So just keep your mouth shut and see what is going on.
Nice team .......our hard earned money goes to drain again. There are quite a few players who should not be selected why i give some small reason.
1.Raheel why on the basis of the last over he bowled in the night game against challengers 25 runs with 3 no balls & couple of wides this kid always struggles with his line & lenght.
2.Amit why because i think he still have to prove more last year he made some runs because ppl don't know about him if he is good he has to be consistent for atleast 3 to 4 years he got selected because he is playing for st.louis right now he is just a average player thats about it.
3.Nasir mahmood why what does this guy do Ooh my bad he plays for Flamed i rest my case.
4.Daxx why i think he is good but he lack a lot of pace not to mention he goes for 13 runs in the first over against pak in the night game i personally thinks he will go for lot of runs in L.A.
5.Imran Taylor why because there are lot of good wk/batsmen in this league such as mahesh parikh. If he got selected because he is young then i think sohail should not be there because he is around 40-41.I dont understand the criteria young and fit players or 40 yrs old VP both selection oppose each other.
5.Maninder bola why because he play only 6 games in our league & you guys think he is selection worthy no way if satha have to prove then maninder is not somebody special.
Bingo Justice 4 all,
Atleast some one with me. I think management should hav some kind of exclamanation for this, Tehsin Ahmed is showing personal reason, I don't think that is the reason, he definately wants to go, but than there will be more descripency will occur so they pick Amitkumar, If Raheel, Nasir, Maninder god know who else. I thinkd midwest sending all these guys to make records. Can Someone Tell who picks this team? God Save Midwest from Evil Selection Committee
Guys,
All this guys you are talking about as pure batsmen, and nobody has even mentioned DARSHAN once is really surprising, he's been putting up numbers for a while now and this year he's in blistering form.
That's just my take and i'm not trying to be biased because he's my teammate.
Tushar,
Darshan definitely is right up there with most of these batsmen, at least the way he has been playing this season. Nobody else has a better seat than me watching him play.
Especially the knock against Pak in the night game, he played a solid 74 without a single chance.
Fellas,
No, it wasn't a strategic blog meeting by Challengers to boost Darshan's chances..... :-)
Like everybody else feels about Imran being left out, I definitely think Darshan missed out this ride...
Shekhs, Tushar,
Fair comments, and to be honest, a lot of people have overlooked him. Someone who's a good 1-day player may not be ideal for 20/20. Similarly, a good 20/20 player may not do well in 1-day games. Darshan does deserve a look into the team, or at least the probables. I'm sure there is some logic behind how the team was picked, but unfortunately no transparency.
Hope to see you guys on Tuesday for the night game.
If I could, sure I would :-) Id even take you to provide running commentary if I could, Tango (and Romeen, so he could lose bets and buy everyone drinks ;-)
c8w, Who said you're old fashioned? You know what's going on these days!! You just need to help Romeen get on the same page!! ;-)

Tango said...
And Sadiq,
even though Satha plays on a 'batter friendly' surface, he's still a stand out performer.
Can't say the same about Amit. No doubt he's a good cricketer, but as I mentioned, there were others who should have been selected ahead of him. He was given preference only because Sohail was the selector.
.....
would you drop in his place? The only 'weak link' on the batting end seems to be Amit.
--------
OK, finally the stats are back up (I couldnt access the stat pages all day!), so I can respond to this one with some numbers :-)
Now, Ive seen Amit play only like once or twice, so I dont have *that* much to go on except actual performances. But I presume thats the case with you too, Tango, and also with the rest of the league (even not knowing who you are... unless youre on the St Louis team or an umpire in St Louis, youve only seen Amit a maximum of twice I presume, as a player :-)
The following are the numbers, the results of his actual performance in our league. Last season, he played 10 games, 2 not outs, 386 runs at 48.25 with 1 century (he was effectively 2nd in batting averages behind only Bhavneet). This season he is currently 7th in runs for the year, 8 matches, 219 runs at 43.8. In other words he has been consistently good in our league so far, 40+ averages both seasons... last year, only 5 batsmen in the entire league averaged over 40 while scoring over 300 runs, Amit included, BTW.
Yes, I think Imran should have been on the team - he would have been one of the first names I picked, on weight of runs as well as how quickly he makes them (thus its an easy statement for me; Imran, to me, was not a particularly marginal choice - for marginal choices Id have to think about things, look at numbers to refresh memory etc, not just randomly picking people). I just think Amit is a good player and is being unfairly maligned, and I said so - and I dont think Imran making it would mean Amit doesnt make it. Imran just makes it for sure in my squad, before most other batsmen IMHO, not just Amit.
You said above that Amit was the obvious "weak link" in the side. Look at the results of last year and early this year objectively, and tell me you still think thats true? Note again, Amit made 386 runs at 48 last year - how does that *ever* become a weak link in any side?
Imran, Shahid and Sohail made more runs than Amit last year, but all played more matches too - Amit actually averaged more than all of them. Afroze played more matches than Amit, but made less runs at a lower average than Amit. Madhu played more matches than Amit but made less runs at a lower average, despite playing in Division Two. And yet, despite all that, its only Amit who is considered the weak link in the batting??
You can presume Iam on whatever bandwagon you want to presume :-) I just wish people wouldnt see ulterior motives in any statements made, but take them at face value for whats actually being said. I think Amit is a very good player who has been consistently good in our league in the 2 years he played - thats borne out by the numbers he has put up. Because I thought he was being unfairly maligned, I said so. If you want to say he is the weak link in the side and there just because of politics, its your right to express your opinion... but if you want to convince me he has less right to be on the team than people whose numbers he has bettered for the past 2 years, I dont neccesarily have to agree with you, no? :-)
(And yes, I know the bit about "playing on a friendly batting surface".. if thats true, then shouldnt St Louis' bowlers have *terrible* numbers, bowling on such a great batting surface? Tehsin, I believe, is currently #2 in wickets in our league bowling on that surface, isnt he? It cant be *that* much of a bowlers graveyard, surely? :-)
c8w
In other words he has been consistently good in our league so far, 40+ averages both seasons... last year, only 5 batsmen in the entire league averaged over 40 while scoring over 300 runs, Amit included, BTW.
As I mentioned earlier: batting friendly pitch. Over the last two seasons, he’s played six games outside St.Louis (including one playoff game) and has averaged a miserable 10.83 in all those games. Not once did he cross 35. Now what might be the reasons behind his failures? Surely, a player who has consistently averaged 40+ over two seasons, ought to have had at least one successfully innings away from home? Or will we have to move the LA Open to St.Louis, to accommodate our homesick superstar?
You said above that Amit was the obvious "weak link" in the side.
No, that’s not what I said, I said: The only 'weak link' on the batting end seems to be Amit.
Imran, Shahid and Sohail made more runs than Amit last year, but all played more matches too - Amit actually averaged more than all of them.
Sure, then please drop Sohail and Shahid from the side and see what happens. If your trying to convince me that Amit is a more deserving player than those three guys, then only God can help you.
Afroze played more matches than Amit, but made less runs at a lower average than Amit. Madhu played more matches than Amit but made less runs at a lower average, despite playing in Division Two
Afroze and Madhu were both selected as All-Rounders, not as specialist batsman. If Imran were to be included in the side, you’d have to drop another specialist batsman. The only specialist batsmen in our side are: Satha, Sohail, and Bola (assuming they don’t let him bowl). So we’d have to drop one of them instead. Please don’t tell me Amit is better than either of them.
You can presume Iam on whatever bandwagon you want to presume :-) I just wish people wouldnt see ulterior motives in any statements made, but take them at face value for whats actually being said.
My query was simple: If you think Imran should be on the team, then who would you drop? Now, I didn’t expect you to misinterpret my statements, and go on a crusade to defend your beloved warrior. The selection of Amit, although debatable, didn’t seem to be inequitable, the exclusion of Imran Syed, did.
And yes, I know the bit about "playing on a friendly batting surface".. if thats true, then shouldnt St Louis' bowlers have *terrible* numbers, bowling on such a great batting surface? Tehsin, I believe, is currently #2 in wickets in our league bowling on that surface, isnt he? It cant be *that* much of a bowlers graveyard, surely?
Sadiq, now your just being silly. You know quiet well that the astro-turf pitch favors spinners, but its still a lot easier to score on than concrete pitches.
There is lot of talk about Imran bhai being added to the team and rightfully so. I saw him bat last week in Washington Park and I don't think there is anyone suited better for the 20/20 format. Six huge sixes in four or five overs of batting. He is a great talent. Also, his height is an advantage on the pitches in LA.
Aside from Imran, I'm surprised why his brother Kamran is not discussed much to be a part of this squad. Both brothers are great hitters.
My two cents...add Imran and Kamran Syed.
Good luck to the players selected.
-Asmar
Wow lots of ppl standup on the issue of imran syed i just wanna ask farhat or someone from the muslim why dont they talk to the management about this issue just ask them the reason i think they do have a right to ask question.
jaggi & aditya why don't u guys do a poll about how many ppl wanna see a selection commitee in place for L.A. Open. Thanks & keep up the good work.
Adi,
We'll be there on tuesday...
We have to come up with a plan to figure out who Tango is...he is trying to set us up...
tango je che bapu khatooo laage che bhai...buddhii and gaa*dsiri karvani, banne ni avdat che bhai..
mehul,
english subtitiles please? even hindi ones will do!
TANGO JO BHI DIMAAG BAHOOT DIMAAG WALLA LAGTA HAI...DIMAAG KE SAATH SAATH BOTTOM MEIN UNGLI KARNE KI KHOBIYAAN BHI RAKHTA HAI...
lol Mehul....good one.!
EK AUR BAAT TO TAI HAI BHAI, KI WOH BIWI BACHHE WALA NAHI HAI. GANDU KE PASS BAHOOT TIME HAI. SAALA SADIQ KI ANALYSIS KI EK, EK LINE LEKAR M** B** KARDI.
At this stage, Tango has become such a cult hero, I'm tempted to say I'm Tango!
Shekhs, are we gonna hang out tonite?
No, I'm Tango...
Sure Romeen..lets get out tonite..
We've started a whole "I'm spartacus" thing....
Pick a place Shekhs. ALL bloggers and blog readers welcome.
Romeen, Swetal was talking about some place the other nite..
Swet, you around?
Tango main hoon, mark idhar hai.
-Samarth.
matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you were Tango..SouthPaw..
You are a gujju...lived in the south....talked about Sivaji the other day like Tango came up with his full name..
Hari,
Why on Earth would you list all those rules on the blog page man.. :-)
Its a pain to scroll down to figure out the thread you wanna post..
You think we are blogging too much ?? :-)
Romeen,
I was talking to my co-workers, they were suggesting a few bars in the wicker park area.
Also, one suggested a Tapas bar called Bravo near the intersection of Division and Damon.
I love Tapas, I dont know if anybody else is up for it..
hmmm... the plot thickens....
Bravo's good for me, any other takers?
Tango? nw? sd? vp? time? guess? anybody?
Swet, are you around?
mastakilla,
just an update on practice, I'll know by this weekend what our slot's going to be.
Mehul,
Don't underestimate Sadiq. I'm sure he's preparing another three page essay.
Sadiq,
Here's the thing. I might have sounded a little harsh in my criticism of Amit in the last post. But thats only because you pissed me off.
I think he's a good batsman, one of the best in our league. But we simply don't have a spot on the side for him. Take the Amol Muzumdar example for instance. He too is a star batsman, but his role (as a middle order batsman) has been filled up by others, like Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman, who are irreplaceable (or were irreplaceable).
Similarly, Amit can't replace Sohail, Bola, Satha, or Imran on our side. Hence, he shouldn't be on the team to LA.
So now I'm Samarth?
Thats much better than being called Shetul.
Tango man,
what happened to you?
running a temperature or something?
You are talking hifi langg now...
Tango, are you up for tonite's party?
Romeen,
No way man! I'm pretty sure there must be a bounty on my head by now.
Maybe some other time.
Whoa, Shekhs. I was just making a joke. I've got less time, and fewer opinions, than Tango.
-Samarth.
I'm Tango..
Samarth,
You did log in as brainsinballs, didn't you?
Sorry Samarth...evidently...you are not Tango.. :-)
that was faiz...i am pretty sure, though he denies, like romeen thinks i am AHQ...
Spartacus now!
This is hilarious!
=====
So now I'm Samarth?
Thats much better than being called Shetul.
=====
Why do you think so? I wouldn't mind being called Shetul myself.
-Samarth.
It gets better and better in here...
Who's next - The Gladiator?
Well Shetul is not playing in the LA Open.
mehulshani said...

Damn! Not Faisal....anyone but Faisal.
I'd say brains/balls-whatever had some pretty strong opinions, and wrote rather long posts. As I said, I have little time and very few opinions to offer. This year, anyway.
I am proud of one opinion though. :-) I was probably the first one to mention an "all-star" game on this blog, in May last year. Seems like it has generated lot of discussion since.
-Samarth.
====
Well Shetul is not playing in the LA Open.
====
Look at all the rosters. Maybe in a week's time, I will wish I didn't either.
-Samarth.
Romeen,
Where is your party tonight?
Shekhs,
I know this doesn't belong here (forgive me c8w and don't raise the finger of death against us), but any update on the completion of the Pak Gym V Challengers 20/20 game? Can you keep us posted, coz i'd like to watch the final quarter if possible.
I'm Tango...
Adi,
We haven't heard anything about that game yet..
Will keep you guys posted..
I AM NOT TANGO. Sorry, but that's already done the round, and I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate this! :-)
Look at all the rosters. Maybe in a week's time, I will wish I didn't either.
-Samarth.
No worries, by then I'll be someone else.
Adi, I didnt think you were Tango, you come up with lame predictions :)
Adi, u coming tonite?
ice_cold,
I think we are thinking Bravo's in wicker park.
ro, or sheks
what was sheks log in lastyear?
Shall I tell them, Sheks?
Sorry, Shekhs
come now... we are all friends here.
cmc, do you write under some other nick too?
no. inspector crusoe.
how 'bout u ro.
did you use a nick?
no N_W today??
tango without cash?
btw tang u make a lot of good points agianst the opinionator(c8w) you certainly came back with a good rebut. this rounds goes to you. sorry sadi your efforts to boost yet another of your boys has fallen short wiht your arguments. imran should definitely replace amit. no doubt.
i propsoe a ballot for the all stars. jaggi, hari please put up a ballot to vote for people to play in the allstar game(virtual) cause this will never take place.
Guys,
Don't go after Identity, Look how great job he is doing, go for it,
I'm Tango, Romeen, Sharath, Adi, Shekhs,
Guys try to make big of deal, this is only way we can reach to Selection (If their is one) panel.
Mehul, U are bystandard person, when it comes against Midwest you want to go with big mouth, and when it comes against Adnan you want to protect him, why is that?
since the allstar game is entertainment only. we should follow suit of, nfl, nba, mlb.
give the people what or who they want to see. we want imran to represent mwcc in laopen. who else wants to see this?
Tango,
You are doing great job, why don't you and Rup run for President and vice president?

What khali-pili getting pissed off because of internet cricket discussion, yaar? :-) If I had gotten pissed off every time someone disagreed with me (or even flamed me) because of an internet cricket thread, Id have serious ulcers by now :-) Nothing should ever be pissing-off-worthy here (or on google-groups).
If you think Amit is a very good batsman, one of the best in our league, there isnt much to argue, really.. cos thats about where Iam at in my opinions too. Was he a *certain* pick for LA (like Satha, Shahid, Asif, Nilesh etc)? I didnt think so, before the selection, but he was surely someone who was up very high among the contenders, and his final selection isnt IMHO a bad one at all.
I dont disagree with your Amol example in some ways, but I do in other ways - a terrific batsman, and he *should* have played for India. Remember, you can say our middleorder was filled up etc, which is all very true... but we've also had Kaif, Jadeja, Badani etc all actually play middle-order test match cricket for India in the past decade. If your best backup batsman had actually been always in the running, maybe that wouldnt have happened, you wouldnt have had true unworthies like Kaif batting for India in test matches. But dont get me started on Amol, you already know thats a bad idea :-)
I dont agree with your analysis of "competitors for Amits spot", BTW. Bola is 2nd in Division Two in wickets at the moment, despite not playing all the games... why is he not an allrounder (you suggested he wouldnt be allowed to bowl, Iam not sure why)? If you look at it that way, pretty much everyone in the side bowls sometime or the other. How many bowlers do you really need? Neither Afroze nor Madhu were in the Top Fifteen in bowlers last year or this year in either division... why dont you want to consider them primarily as batsmen who do some bowling? Just like everyone else, theyre in the running for spots along with Amit and the rest IMHO.
I think when youre picking this side, youre picking people like Shahid, Nilesh, Asif etc as certainties - and they are all allrounders too, and your best bowlers. Then youve taken 2/3 specialist pacemen too (Nasir, Raheel), plus people like Daxx and Bola (allrounders). You get to that stage, surely with the rest bowling isnt that *huge* a consideration anymore? For *all* the other players I think the batting ability is the most important... and in that I think the numbers Amit has put up compare with anyone else on the team.

bond
how come you don't take shots at mehul? is it a fellow gujju thing?
afterall you say he protects big mouth.
I Think These should be on Executive Body
Tango -------> President
Rup ---------> Vice Prsident
Adi ---------> Secretary
Romeen ------> Public Relation
Tushar, Sharath, Shekhs as a Advisor
Jaggi -------> Marketing
By the way I'm neither Gujju nor protection Mehul.
I just wanted to to let myopenion regarding Mehul, When it comes to Adnan he is always in defensive mode.
Where did you see I'm protection Mehul.
sadiq is there a spot for imran on the team? and why does amit deserve it more then him? if you had to pick one(i know you won't) because you never go out on a limb. who would you pick. not that your opinion matters...i don't know you can keep justifying a spot for amit and deny one for imran. who has proven himself over and over. it is biased view like yours that keep good cricketers down. just because you back someone does not mean they are up to those standards.
I never like mehul as a player, he is always crying baby on the field, always have someknid of excuse in favor of him, always
How about Darshan?
He is playing best cricket of him in regular game as well as in 30/30.
He should be more deserving than most batsman.
bond if he agrees with adnan on everything why do u take shots at adnan only? this is called hypocracy. why so civil to mehul and asking him questions cordially but name calling when it come to the other.
now you really sound dumb. bond!
bond, dumb bond.

Heybuddy, it always like that, if selectors have soft side towards you, you are in,very simple.
If you look at Team India,
Ahjit Agarkar: When ever there is big tournament,he is in, how, nobody knows, but he plays or gets selected.
so let's come out and say it. sadi, did you help select the team?
I'm not taking shot at adnan, I'm just expressing my openion, that's howI feel, you don't need to take personally.
By the way Myname is Bond, Dumb or not,but myname is Bond, Just Bond
sadiq
when was the last time you called someone for chucking in the league?
and where did you get your notes on lbw?

Opinionator! I like that! I think I shall adopt it as my new nickname :-)
BTW, whatever you think of my arguments is ok... but please, dont call him "my boy" :-) I dont know the guy from Adam, Ive met him like once in my life I think, if I passed him on the road tomorrow I probably wouldnt recognize him :-) I know *all* the other guys on the squad much better than I know him, have seen them more and for longer while playing etc. I just felt he was being unfairly maligned as a bad selection for no good reason (partly because of the team he plays for), and disagreed with it, is all :-)
c8w
nothing personal bond. just a bad attempt at a joke on my part.
my apologies. sir.
so sadiq
would you support replacing amit with imran? don't go out on a limb now.

cro_magna_crawling said...
sadiq is there a spot for imran on the team? and why does amit deserve it more then him?
-------
You werent around yesterday, were you? The first thing I ever said was that Imran would have definitely been on my team - he wouldnt even be a fringe-candidate for me, hed be a certainty. I think you cant ignore performances in the league... the guy was the #1 rungetter in the entire league, I would have had him in as one of my first picks. What Ive said repeatedly (apparently to no avail) is I dont think its only Imran *or* Amit, in my opinion.
c8w
so in a limited capacity (the number of players going) imran should replace amit? afterall we want our best to go. what is even more appaling is his name is not even on the list of players contacted. that tell me you guys have an ulterior motive. according to your own judgements he is the #1 getter all last year and you guys don't even ask him if he wants to go. that is very disappapointing.
i am not asking as one of your picks, i am asking as the pick. he should be a definite just like shahid asif...not even being asked, what is the reason for that?
cro_magna_crawling
Thanks forhumble comunication.
My only intention is to improve league, even if we all have to be bad guys.
Guys Keep Fighting until Justice is Served.
cmc,
I was Desi_babu last year...will that answer your question..?
Romeen,
You are off the oath of secrecy... :-)
Shekhs, That was last year, how abt this year?
if the league meaning the teams are footing the bill for la open tickets we have all the right to voiceferously express our opinions.
people like the opinionator want to keep on defending management no matter what they do. c8w grow a pair and don't justify the unjust. imran got a raw deal, regardless of you strattling the fence.

BTW, scores in St Louis this season are as follows:
AAA 53 allout
Rogers Park 135 allout
Challengers 164 allout
Pak Gym 96 allout
United 223 allout (chasing 236)
c8w
That is perfect, cro_magna_crawling, but as a player you don't hav any right to speak, that right only team Captian or Representative has. so as aindividual I ro you speaks, we will be denied to give any answer.
sheks it all makes sense now.
Hey Romeen,
I've never seen you taking shot at Officials? Is it some knda a deal or something? Just want to raise eye browse!!!!!
once again esoteric information c8w.
you are not keeping into account all of these teams had to drive 5+ hrs.
st. louis 137 allout
st. louis 167
both losses and on the road. point is you have no point.

so let's come out and say it. sadi, did you help select the team?
--------
CMC, you can say whatever you want about my umpiring or my opinions, its ok.... but please, sir, dont accuse me of selecting the team! Not that! Anything but that! :-)
Iam just an umpire, is all - I dont select anything, I dont help in selecting anything. Iam perfectly willing to offer my own personal views about anything on the blog, but thats as far as it goes.
Once again - just so its clear to everyone. Please... I DID NOT select the team :-) If I had selected it, it would probably be a whole lot different.. but we all have our own views, and are entitled to them. (And yes, as I said above, Imran would have been on a team I would have selected... Amit may have been too, however :-)
c8w
c8w,
you just can't bring yourself to take a stance. very diapointng, indeed.
last question then i am done picking on you,(you have been a good sport) did imran get a raw deal?
Hey CMC now you're trying to cut deal on side? Come on mon Stand up for every fair player who is not in the roster.
sorry bond
but darshan is having a good year and obviously in good form. he should go, but still feel imran got a far worse deal! the man lead the league in runs and no one even contacts him.
"I never like mehul as a player, he is always crying baby on the field, always have someknid of excuse in favor of him, always"
Thanks bond. Keep it coming.
Bond,
This year I'm Tango..
cmc,
What makes sense out of me being D_B last year?
CMC I'm not in favor of Darshan, but officials never look at him for LAOpen at all, that's pathatic and tells how favoritism goes with someone else's money, Is it clear buddy?
Shekhs Tango can't be you definetaly, I bet you whole botle on that? anyone agree or supporter?
I doubt on Adi, since him, tango and Sadi are the only in blog that goes with full description of any matter.
bondbhai tu gujju..j che..tango, romeen shu keh che?

c8w,
you just can't bring yourself to take a stance. very diapointng, indeed.
last question then i am done picking on you,(you have been a good sport) did imran get a raw deal?
-------
Geez, CMC, Ive been saying Imran got a raw deal in my opinion since yesterday afternoon! Doesnt anybody read anything? :-)
As for not taking a stance... that *is* a stance, just not one everyone seems to like, but thats ok with me :-) But in this instance I'll agree with Adnan... its amusing to be accused of cowardice by someone who has never put forth any opinion under his own actual name :-)

Good Luck with your game tomorrow..
Neither Afroze nor Madhu were in the Top Fifteen in bowlers last year or this year in either division... why dont you want to consider them primarily as batsmen who do some bowling?
Just so I make myself clear once again: I don’t think Afroze should have been in the team. Selecting him as an All-Rounder is a far bigger travesty than Amit being selected as a specialist batsman. But, he is the only other half-decent spinner in the side (assuming Bola doesn’t bowl spin; and no, I don’t consider Satha and Sohail to be spinners). Therefore, replacing him with Imran makes little sense. I would have taken Pradeep in his place; he’s a much better fit, since he’s a lot harder to hit than Afroze, and he’s a pretty handy batsman too, although his batting style is best suited for the longer version of the game.
Now, I wouldn’t mind Imran being selected ahead of Madhu. But Madhu, unlike Pradeep, is an excellent 20-20 batsman. So I’d probably take him ahead of Amit. If it were a 50 over game, then I’d pick Amit over Madhu in a heartbeat. Madhu is also a handy bowler, and considering the past achievements of our opening bowlers, or lack there off, I’d be a lot happier having Madhu on my side.
Just by glancing over the names in the squad, it looks as though our batting is extremely strong, while our bowling is extremely weak!
We only have two reliable bowlers in the side, Nilesh and Asif. Shahid and Daxx are far too inconsistent, and the rest of the bowlers…..well, I don’t want to beat up on them even more, so lets just leave it at ‘not good enough’. Having a lot of backups is a necessity.
Our batting on the other is loaded. Just look at the names - Bola, Sohail, Satha, Shahid, Amit, Asif, Afroze, Nilesh, Daxx, Whew!
Hence, if we are to include another specialist batsman like Imran, Amit’s the guy who will have to make way, since he’s the weakest of the all the specialist batsman in the team. (And ‘weak’ is a relative term. So don’t get on my ass again.)
But dont get me started on Amol, you already know thats a bad idea :-)
No, I won’t argue with you about Amol Muzumdar. I already read the article you posted on him on cricinfo ;-)
Just want to say that Amol had a solid start to his career. In his first eight years he averaged something like 75, but back then he was competing against guys like Dravid, Manjrekar, Laxman, Azhar, Kambli, Ganguly and Tendulkar IIRC. His best chance of making the team came after 2000; unfortunately he went into a batting slump then. Consequently, guys like Badani, Kaif, Yuvraj were selected, and poor Muzumdar was left out despite regaining form a few years later.
But anyways, I agree, he should have gotten at least one chance. Poor guy! Kinda reminds me of Imran now ;-)
Shekhs u calling Sweetman is this some kind of TYPO I guess, it is personally, sorry Shekhs.

Well, you are playing 20/20...so you might as well stock your batsmen rather than bowlers..
No matter who bowls, they are gonna score...it was never a bowler's game..
Bond,
Do I need to give you some lessons in English now...??
I thought you were a "BOND"...
