Discussion for games played in the LA Open

Word has just filtered through that MWCC lost a thriller by
a wafer-thin margin in their first game in the LA Open.

MWCC batted first, and scored 143 in their 20 overs. The
top rungetters were Amit and Madhu with 43 and 30 respectively.
Both Sohail and Satha hit a couple fours early each before
being dismissed.

In reply Ventura XI got home thanks to their WI-international
Leon Garrick, who carried them to victory with 4 wickets and
3 balls to spare. MWCC apparently felt they had Garrick out
early (caught-and-bowled by Amit), but much to their chagrin
it was ruled a bump-ball. Asif apparentely bowled beautifully,
conceding only 1 boundary in his 4 overs and picking up a
wicket as well. A couple more chances were given to Garrick
(it was supposedly fielding that was one of the biggest reasons
for MWCC's loss), and it finally came down to 18 needed off
the last 2 overs. It was eventually about 11 needed in 7
balls, when Nasir (bowling the penultimate over) beat
everyone, batsman and keeper, off the last ball of his over
that went for 4 byes! It was thus down to 7 off the last over,
and Ventura XI made it with 3 balls to spare.

More updates (from anyone who gets them) and updates to follow
in the discussion-section of this thread.

Madhu Said..First and foremost I should say this MWCC is not FUN cricket league, but a competitive cricket league. The way it helps is league is by giving the selected players a 'Exposure' to higher level cricket.
QC ask: Is there is process first of all to select these players?

Madhu Said: Also, this helps in showcase the talent of MCC. We do not play in tournis its kinda like owning Porche and NOT driving it on mean roads of Lake shore....for just showcase of it..:)Ask Romeen on this..
QC ask: Showcasing talent is good, everone agrees. Shouldn't that be better to start in Chicago with our people by conducting an All star tourney instead of LA ?

Finally QC ask: It is good for Raheel (no offence personally)..that league spent some dollars to learn legcutters from F.Rose in LA. But how is league going to benefit from that ..is he going to share that with his fellow league players ??

It was fun reading through this La blog.
looks like it's safe to say this La has forced us to demand a change in the way we run thing in MWCC.
The only person that looked like bringing that change was Rup with his views and Ideas.
Looks like he don't want to anymore because of a few jerks on this blog.
Rup we need you back and to run for president.

Well .. my opinion ... Sending teams to LA Open definitely helps ...

But the team which went to LA .. should share their experiences with everybody .. like what kind of bowling worked .. what not to do .. as Madhu pointed out, will help a lot ...

About Oldies-Younger debate .. we dont have a coaching system to nurture the young guns properly ... So the experienced members of the team and league who have been performing very well over the years should guide the younger ones with talent ... We had a umpiring workshop in the beginning of the season .. similarly ... if we can have workshops for batting, bowling, fielding, wk ... that would benefit to all of us ... And I feel ppl like Satha, Shahid and many others can do this ... if we cannot get first-class/International playres for this ...

Cheers,
Alpesh

------------------------
Could'nt have said it better myself.
------------------------
My understanding is this is an investment that if we do good then MWCC makes some monies to spend on our league
If it's for show case then leave our monies alone you all pay your way through this learning process.

Madew said...

Qc,
I agree 'Process' is something we need to work and Teams have to come forth to put a process in place so that every 'Talented', 'Dedicated','hard working', 'Fit' cricker should get a chance to represet MWCC at higher level...in various competitions..

I think current Management is planning on it 'Mini World Cup' I think..some one from Mangement have to comment here.....I think good idea is to have whole year events planned out for our players..like tounis, and stuff...to partcipitate in..Some thing we need to suggest to Mangement or Idea page..is all I can say..

Its not just Raheel, I will bet everyone involed, including myself have learnt a lot...We represented MWCC for this tourni and as you know only 13 of us were able to go..its not feasible for everyone to Go...Hopefully these who had chance to go will share their experience with their team members and elevate the level of cricket that will result in better competition which inturn will trickle to the team that are playing with them..I understant this statement is not 'Tangible', but we should have teams representing MWCC in various tournis..may be different players is all I can say....for now..We can put it up in idea page..

Raheel, y r u silent.. share some tips buddy:)))) all that think we should not send team to la are crazy, people learn from this exposure, teams learn from players who go to la and opposition learns from teams whose players go to la.. leageu gets better. what is wrong with this????

Vettipasangals..Can you tell me what have you learnt till now from players who went to LA open all these years?

If you read this blog .. any outsider can tell that we don't have good idea about what our
AllStar's. Look at the arguments about selction of the team to LA.

First let the mgmt give us a chance to watch the talent we have in our league by conducting Allstars match and then let these starts educate us what they learnt from international stars.

Ok, it's going to be $25 per secret ... LOL.
I was just bowling in dippers from outside or close to off stump because if you give width on those pitches (and outfield) its a certain 4 around gully/point/cover area. When I went to field after my spell I was directly in front on the Punjab Blues pavilion. Rose said well bowled and asked why i was not bowling the ball the moves away from right hander, I said I can't control it ends up being a half volley, he told me to see him after the match on how to control outswinger/leg cutter.
No real secret he just showed how to grip the ball and how to change the thumb and wrist position for leg cutter.

Vetti,
Sorry macha...it was an abrupt trip....just decided to go..last minute...

We had a blast..

maybe we'll get out one of these days...and Raheel can share his secret leg cutter with us..

Madew I know you are a good cricketer and have seen you play as well. Your talent is well respected...same with other LA Open participants as well. No offence intended on any of them.

Take your case Madew.

What do you think are the benefits of playing in LA OPEN at this age? Are you looking to further your career in cricket in the US?

If MWCC's vision is to promote cricket, I don't see MWCC actively nurturing young talent...there's not much support for the academy.

If our dollars are used for nurturing young talent, most of us will not have problems supporting it...but if our dollars are used for satisfying the fantasies of the current lot, then its not fair. Hope Adnan hears this out.

DeepDownWithin said...

didnt we all agree that we should do it only if we find sponsors nxt year??? a few keep going back to same points. a lot of people dont have talent here, but those that do shoud go. isit so tough to understand??? simon, qc stop saying same thing over and over. not even a young guy will have a career here in the US now, it is a good 10 years away. does that mean we stop promoting???? wtf??? get a sponsor, send a team.its not hard. ayyyyoooooooooooo!!!

I don't think is Adnan is ready to spend money nurturing young talents........

He will be more intrested in spending money on tournament like LA Open which don't do any good for cricket in Midwest region and whtever money he will left he will spend on arranging family gattering and picnic for Div 1 finals only.......

I chatted with Nilesh Kulkarni for about 15 mins., asked him a lot of questions - how to bowl "attacking" while not flighting it. (He himself did this brilliantly in the semis.) How much to flight the ball given that we both already release it from 7-ft+. He gave some valuable tips, such as bowling "over-spin", not "under-spin" or "side-spin". He said to not get upset and change the line if the batsman hits through the off-side. Other kind of known things, such as staying side-on...

I think most people in our league are helpful, if you ask. Before I left for LA, I had called and asked Bhavneet for tips to bowl there, and he was very helpful. I could not get Asif's contact. I have already played Div I in the SCCA league in LA some years back, but that is 50 overs, so I asked for specific 20/20 tips.

Last but not least, I had mentioned even last year on this blog that LA Open is OK for experience of meeting top players, but to actually test the quality of our players and our league, it is better to participate in longer games (40/45/50 overs). LA Open is 20/20 - it is not a test of anything, except who is having a good day. Come on, it is 60 overs total. That is like 1.33 league games, or literally 1.33 days in MCC league. This is why selection questions are also kind of moot - how can you predict which particular players will do well on 1 (or 1.33) specific day? Anyone can have 1 (or 1.33) good days...

If you talk to some of the US league players there, they worship Regionals as God. That is the true test of their ability at US-level. They come to LA Open for fun and experience. But the next step up the ladder from a league is Regionals... then Zonals... then Nationals... then international cricket. This is the way the ladder is set up. LA Open is not on the ladder, but 40/50-over competitions are.

Raheel said...

Guys, seeing and playing against stars and meeting them is all good, but the part that I enjoyed the most about LA open is playing on those pitches and grounds - very close to international standard! It fun to just field in that outfield. As a batsman you get value for your shots and the ball does something early on off the seam, great experience.
I'm thinking about gunning for the batting allrounder's spot next time ;) as I have not been dismissed in 4 visits to the crease at LA open (one last year, 3 this year) .. 37 runs 1x4, 3x6, no average! hehe ;).

Simon,
All I can say is as promoter of cricket, MWCC should allocate funds for academy as future stars may emerge from there..Some one was mentioning about Ajit's kid in academy how well he bats though so young..I feel thats a good invest ment right there..I think you should fight or should say lobby for it in AGM for allocation of funds u know for academy and future of the sport...

Coming to my advancement, I don't think it will help in any way as I don't have aspiration for playing US or something....(but you never know:)..USA players are all 35+, check roster on USACA site Clayton lambert was like 45's I am only 34!:) All I am trying to do is play best possible competitive cricket around these areas at my age and trying my best to learn and improve everytime I step on the field..If I get selected to represent regionals or LA or any other tournis so be it..If I don't its fine with me too..but I will always play this game that I love and cherish!

Ajit's kid batting against Samir's kid (Samir Champaneri of Phoenix) should be a killer contest. Samir's kid may be the best bowler in our league under the age of 8.

Raheel,

I like the all-rounder idea too....especially if Tariq is out of office. Because then you'll have to actually earn your spot in the side. And being a handy bat will only boost your stock.

In any case, I'm not blaming you for your unfair selection. Its not your fault that our selectors are a bunch of morons. At least you did your best and put up decent numbers.

I'm just trying to give you a few pointers before next years LA Open.

Anonymous said...

Madhu,

I'm glad to see your enthusiasm to play, if selected, in the regionals. Sadly, your zeal isn't shared by most other oldies. Most feel that playing an additional 10 overs every weekend is a real pain in the butt, let alone playing an additional week of grueling cricket. That is why I said earlier that if oldies don't want to go, we should send a team full of youngsters to play.

SimonDispatch said...

Madew, appreciate ur response.

VP, if getting a sponsor is not that hard, why don't you offer your helping hand first.

Raheel said...

Tango you're nasty .. I was jk about my batting (although the LA #s are real!) .. now people will start picking on my batting!! I'm just a lower order hitter who can send the occasional ball over the ropes if its in the slot thats all! Peace out.

Anonymous said...

Raheel,
I too was just kidding about your batting. No, and don't worry, we don't have time to pick on your batting....have our hands full with your bowling performances ;)

Those who have aspirations to play high level Cricket pay the same amount as you do. Therefore it is their right and Management's top priority to provide them with the opportunity to play that level of Cricket. Youth Academy is already setup, why MWCC does not spend money to promote Cricket at grassroot level is a question I cannot answer.

Experience it once and then tell me if you feel the same. A lot of people are saying that L.A. Open is useless. Well if we put the right people together supported by couple of international stars, we can generate money for MWCC (this year the total prize money was approx $35k). Another thing, I was talking to the president of Australian All stars and he told me about the gruesome traveling schedule they went through to get to L.A. (total of 30 hr flight time, and 6 hr delay in Auckland). I asked him whether all of that trouble was worth it and He replied with a resounding 'Yes'.

Adnan:

Simon Says: America is not the place where folks come to further their career in cricket. So, such aspirations are only an after-thought, knowing that there is some cricketing infrastructure here in the US. If it doesn't happen, I don't think our players would lose out.

Adnan: Therefore it is their right and Management's top priority to provide them with the opportunity to play that level of Cricket.

Simon Says: Yes, its the players right, but not necessarily league's priority. That has to be decided in the next AGM or better yet, during the next election campaign :)

Aditya/Hari/Jaggi/Sadiq,

Can one of you put this poll for vote?

Should the league care about future LA Open participation?

* Don't Care.
* No.
* Yes.

We'll have a poll on sponsorship depending upon the response.
